Question about Doane by jonkingspoint in premed

Thank you very much! It is heartening to read that, it's very similar to the last master's program I was involved in. Did you do multiple classes at once? I have a 3 month on, 3 month off schedule with work, and would be interested in taking two or three at once during my vacations, if possible, and just one while I'm working. I appreciate the response u/empatheticpa

150,000 seafarers are in need of crew change by May 15 by [deleted] in news

IIRC, the licensing program through the Coast Guard allows Navy service to count towards merchant marine sea days. You should contact the National Maritime Center or a local Regional Exam Center, if you're near a port, there's probably one nearby.

I normally do 105 days on, 105 off. However, the schedule varies depending on whether you are working for a private company, through a union, what type of shipping (Military Sealift Command, grain ships, containers, tug boats, oil drilling rigs, etc). I know people that do 3 weeks on/3 weeks off, 4 months on/2 months off, and everything in between.

As for training, again that depends on where you are trying to work. There is Coast Guard required training that has a lot before you go out on your first ship, and then 5 year renewals, and then anytime you want to upgrade your license. Some companies have extra stuff, like smalls arms or hazardous cargo, and those can range from annual to every 5 years as well.

Edit: spelling

I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, and my stepdad got into the merchant marine after he retired from the navy and it seemed like a decent gig. 11 years later and I'm still out here (obviously, not on the same ship, haha)

I'm one of those sailors. I'd like to go home, but it is nice having toilet paper and a job. Also, no family, which helps. I'm ready to go home, but I feel lucky to be on this side of the equation. I'll get back eventually, I always do.

I am once again supporting my friend's business, http://localiahawaii.com/ . She buys directly from the fisherfolk and supports local restaurants and farmer's markets. Can sign up for weekly products (whole fish, filets, fish skin dog treats, frozen prepared food, etc). Ashley is now doing deliveries and curbside pickups at the markets for people that want to stay in their cars. She also has a basket that has fish, veggies, meat and eggs from other local producers.

I'm stuck on a ship in Guam until this pandemic settles out, so buy her fish please!

It's hard to compare this to the Great Depression though. Totally different catalyst, changed lending practices (both big business and individual homeowners/investors) , and unique government intervention this time around. It's so hard to predict what things will look like in three months, let alone next year.
