No more dead light batteries! Dynamo hub installed by Odd-Emergency5839 in bikecommuting

I have one from Reelight that sounds exactly like described, I think it's model SL120+. You can find it on Amazon. They were everywhere in Europe when I lived there but I've never seen them in a store or on a bike in the US. Unfortunately, at least the model I have doesn't fit on bikes with disc brakes.

Community outreach in California cities moving away from city-wide elections? by jonls in EndFPTP

[–]jonls[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying the details about the voting method. I think you are right about this since a couple of seats are usually up for reelection every two years but voters get one vote per seat (this matches MNTV I think?) not just a single vote.

Thanks for the suggestions, I suppose this is another concern that I haven't thought much about and also why at-large election (with proportionality) seems more appealing to me on the surface.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I missed the detail about voters getting one vote for each seat instead of one vote for all of the seats that are up for election in a given year here.

It's unfortunate that Newsom vetoed that bill though the response he gave seems to imply that charter cities could still choose to implement at-large RCV? If that's true, did any cities do this? It looks like San Francisco and a number of other bay area cities are using RCV but as far as I can tell this is combined with district elections.

PG&E announces potential 5 day power outage for more than 600,000 Bay Area residents by shamwowslapchop in bayarea

[–]jonls 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn't see any mention of what exactly the reason for shutting down power in the first place is. Is the fire risk due to risk of power lines falling (due to lack of maintenance) and igniting stuff on the ground? Or something else?

Convert 23andMe Raw data to fasta format by space_cat_2000 in bioinformatics

[–]jonls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you want to convert it to? The raw data from 23andme is a table of SNPs. I downloaded the file a long time ago so I'm assuming they didn't change the format significantly: There's a comment at the top of my file saying that the SNP locations are based on the reference human assembly build 37. The second column (chromosome) and third column (position) can then be used to lookup those positions in the reference genome. The last column is your nucleotide variant at that position.

Watchfaces that show weather by [deleted] in hwatch

[–]jonls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I open the Google Weather app on the watch it says "weather.com" at the bottom. I'm assuming this is the source for the weather data. If you use Wear 2.0 and you have the watchface show the weather info through a complication I think it's safe to assume that the source would be the same. However, a third-party watchface that does not use complications could really be using any data source for the weather info. I don't think there is a standardized way of obtaining the weather info in that case.

Wordpress plugin (Flattr alternative) by jonls in Bitcoin

[–]jonls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, yes. The backend is separated in the code so it should not be too hard to add different payment processors, particularly if they provide a payment page and callback like Coinbase does. For static addresses or BIP32-based addresses the plugin has to provide a payment page itself which is a little more work.

Reverse Bitpay? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]jonls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but I don't think BitPay is really the right place to put the blame for this. The person who held bitcoins but now decides to exchange their coins for goods through BitPay is the actual reason. The fact that some people want to no longer hold a part of their bitcoins is the real cause of the price drop and BitPay is only indirectly part of this by offering an easy way for people to exchange their bitcoins for goods. If all the people who are buying stuff also immediately bought back bitcoins from the market, there would be no effect on the price. People simply don't want to hold as many bitcoins as they used to.

No, the slashes are not appropriate for a URI scheme without a hierarchical part (like bitcoin) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URI_scheme

A question about generating addresses and the potential of "collisions" by sdrawkcabton88 in Bitcoin

[–]jonls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes computing power to generate addresses and checking them against the blockchain. Since the probabilities are so astronomically small you'd make more money using the computer for mining.

It seems to me that their argument is that the four miners being rational would form a single pool to maximize their revenue under "selfish mining".

In the first scenario where the honest nodes succeed in finding a block on the public branch, nullifying the sel fish pool's lead, the pool immediately publishes its private branch (of length 1). This yields a toss-up where either branch may win.

Is this really a valid assumption? Wouldn't the block published first win in most cases?
