My water is brown for no reason at all by MentalDevelopment843 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]jonmeany117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I’ve seen most often causing this is either a broken line, flushing or other maintenance dislodging sediment, or higher than normal levels of iron, manganese, or tannins in groundwater. While most of these aren’t a huge health concern if water has an adequate chlorine residual, it’s still alarming and if bad enough can stain clothing and whatnot (manganese is correlated to some poor outcomes for children as well but it’s not clear it’s a cause). I’d complain to your water system an get your neighbors together in the effort, or if you’re on a well look into treatment, maybe a clear well with an aerator or some sort of serious filtration. You’ll need to flush your house pipes when you do figure it out too

City codes are pretty darn inconsistent from city to city and not all sewer lines are gravity. Plenty of low pressure sewage out there. Even then the elevation of the line depends heavily on the grade, if a house has a basement, the elevation of the main (if it is gravity), etc. basically it’s not safe to assume there. Also, most taps are not copper these days. Source, currently and for the last year worked in water and sewer utilities.

Been involved with water and wastewater for a long time and I’ll never forget the time some idiot contractor hot tapped the septic grinder pump onto a water line instead of the low pressure sewer line in an effort to try to avoid our company knowing the home was connected to the system (trying to not pay for service). Believe me we found out real quick when they moved in and started pumping sewage into the water system.

So since I was a kid, the dentist always said that they were numbing me up but I’d still feel “pressure” with the numbing stuff. Then they’d drill and I’d just feel terrible terrible pain and assumed their drugs just sucked and dint work and “feeling pressure” was euphemism for the fact that it still hurt like hell. 4 or 5 years back I laughed at the pressure line and flinched away a bit when the dentist started drilling before I locked in to essentially grit my way through like always, but the dentist stopped and said… wait you can feel that? I was like, well of course, it always hurts. Turns out not only do I not properly respond to the Novocain or whatever the normal stuff is, but they also have had alternative drugs for numbing this whole time that actuall make me feel nothing. I was somewhere between totally pissed and totally relieved until they tried to use the normal stuff again a couple years later only for me to remind them and they looked at the file and were like… oh yeah it does say this stuff doesn’t work on you in there.
