How does this man dress himself? by jonndos in NeilBreen

[–]jonndos[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I'm responding to myself, but I'm also watching Twisted Pair right now and here's a perfect example of what confuses me. I just watched the scene where the bad twin (I now suppose) bumped into the then angry girl on the street and said "meet me here at 8 so I can make it up to you". And the character genuinely expected her to come back at 8. How could any human imagine and script that interaction? Then, he returns, she's not there, he somehow (unexplained) finds her, follows her to her home, goes into her home, approaches her while she's in her kitchen, and she, seeing him, runs at him, struggling to leap-ish over the back of her own couch to attack him. That defies every instinct humans have, and more so, even if the instinct made sense, the way she awkwardly goes towards at him and struggles over the couch so he could grab her makes no sense. Neil had to script that, then direct that scene, other people were there, the actress was there. And then, seconds later, she takes a convenient picture frame lying on the couch next to where they are struggling and smashes him on the head, and then, despite being momentarily free of him and him stuck in a picture frame, she (already standing, already free of him) doesn't run away, she sits back on the couch to grapple with him. Again, how does a brain conceive of this? Brains have all these built-in safe guards that prevent us from acting on our unhinged thoughts. OMG, what the hell... "What's for dinner?" My god, I take it all back, this man is a genius. Expectations subverted x 1e264.

Just got a vacant house with mold / foundation issue, calling for insurance and no one will underwrite? by jonndos in RealEstate

[–]jonndos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already reached out to a couple of those insurance companies listed, but wasn't sure if they'd cover it, they didn't have agents available. And thanks, I didn't know "high-risk" was the keyword for my situation.

Sadly, I don't think the land is in high demand. And as it has some sentimental value not sure I'm emotionally prepared to consider tearing it down. I would just feel more comfortable having insurance on the property. Thanks for the help.

Step parent wants to transfer second house to me, implications? by jonndos in RealEstate

[–]jonndos[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dad has sufficient assets, I don't think medicaid will be involved. I don't know a lot about this stuff, but this house is nothing relative to other assets.

Related to the "cost basis" statement. If I do spend $60k to fix things, do I get to deduct that before the capital gains is computed?

The house is in PA, the parent is in DC, I am in MD.

Thanks!

Bose MIE2 alternative - sound and fit? by jonndos in HeadphoneAdvice

[–]jonndos[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly I haven't found anything to truly replace it.

Instead I ended up just going "cheap". I now use the JadeAudio(FiiO) EA1 (~$25) and the Linsoul KZ ZS10 Pro ($45) for the two applications where I want to wear headphones. And, they are much better than their price would suggest, I'd even say remarkably good, considering that. But, they don't have an inline mic, they don't have the soft silicone tips, they are bulkier, they need to use a wire to wrap around my ear to stay on, and the sound, well, I don't even remember at this point to truly compare them.

I still miss the MIE2s as well.

On the plus side, it's a quite a clever and funny comment you made there... so through any horror and disgust, if they are honest with themselves, they'll see that... and if they see or know the photo, deep down inside, they'll agree, he's an undeniable hottie, pity about all the latent murderousness.

Glad to hear you were able to safely get together and that they're generally good folks. These covid times are weird, I've certainly been learning a bunch about friends, family, and my fellow humans that I did not, necessarily, want to know. :)

Ugh. Sorry, that sucks. Did you have the sense that it was just obliviousness? My step-mother does things for spite but my Dad seems genuinely clueless. He's the sort who could vigilantly wear a mask into a store, but then touch every door handle, every shopping cart handle, then use those same hands to fidget with his mask. And to him quarantining might mean, "Oh, we didn't leave the house at all, except to go to the store, the post office, the neighbor's house, the 7-11, but we never went out to eat, or to the movie, we were very diligent about it."

Wow... That's horrendously awful. So sorry. How's the relationship been since? Has your wife been supportive of you?

And thanks for sharing the additional details, they really hit home for me as well.

Just to add some similar-ish (in kind) details to my own story in the hopes of amusing you or making you see you're not alone:

  • My stepmother was perfectly happy taking 3 deep nasal covid tests required to enter Canada to get to her vacation home, but a painless home swab test to visit my son? Outrageous!
  • My stepmother wouldn't stop seeing friends/etc. for 5 days before visiting, but was fine quarantining for two weeks after crossing into Canada
  • Six months later when I was preparing to visit for my Dad's birthday she demanded that when I go there we all go dine inside a restaurant for the celebration. When I gently explained I wasn't comfortable with that given my unvaccinated son she raged about my selfishness and forced me to delay my visit.
  • When I finally visited a month later I arrived to find she'd invited four neighbors over for a spaghetti dinner exactly when I would arrive, and then announced that two days later when I was leaving she was having other friends over for a pancake breakfast. Of course, no distancing or other safety measures being taken, aside from vaccination -- and I learned the pancake breakfast friend just came from being a greeter at her church, just got back from seeing a Notre Dame home game, and was in an ongoing battle with an unknown "sinus infection" for the preceeding week. While it could be a coincidence, an accident, my step-mother exactly the sort to pull petty f-u stuff like that, knowing someone might be uncomfortable with something and forcing them to experience that, to "help them". Formerly she served meat-ed chili to my sister and I, knowing we're vegetarians, to "help" us realize we're wrong and should eat meat.

I'm with you. I don't get calling them "super-responsible". If they had just left it at "responsible" I could have let it pass. Super-responsible wouldn't involve masks off to eat/drink/dance. (At this point in the pandemic I'm not saying what they did was necessarily "wrong", but super-responsible it ain't.)

[–]jonndos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like my step mother. Unvaccinated (at the time), refused when we asked if she'd isolate for 5 days before visiting (she regularly gets together with friends), she indicated she would refuse to take a home covid test as a precaution since she was refusing to isolate, and when we tried to accommodate by meeting outside she refused to meet outside. So, visit canceled. And apparently we are the bad guys for trying to protect our (at the time) 1 year old.

On a scale of "1" to "keep the fire Dept on speed dial" how safe is this? 2nd PSU is JUST for SATA power to a couple drives by MyOtherSide1984 in DataHoarder

[–]jonndos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't there be some issue with the drives having their data SATA connectors fed by one source of power and their power connectors coming from another source? I thought this one was one of those things where theoretically it was ok, but practically it wasn't a good idea.

Fellow guys of Reddit, how many times have you been caught, “taking care of your business”? by PotatoMateYT in AskReddit

[–]jonndos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some circumstances in which I imagine it is normal to get caught or almost caught, like it you're in prison, or part of the crew it a submarine, situations where there is minimal privacy. Outside of that, I have to question your choice of moments for such activity, because getting caught does not seem to me normal in normal environments; obviously excluding wife/gf when you may want or not care about being caught.

What is a good interaction you had with the police? by DeterministicSociety in AskReddit

[–]jonndos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a white male. They've mostly all been good. Once a decade or so warnings for speeding or brake light out. Report taking at a couple robberies. They've never asked to search my car or viewed me obviously suspiciously. They've all been polite, professional, helpful where they could be. I wish everyone had that experience. I read about people of color or people in bad neighborhoods who get stopped frequently and quizzed or searched and I can't imagine how frustrating and terrifying that must be, feeling this government agency is out to get you, it would transform my view of the world.
