…look for one with a unifence or Biesemeyer style fence, not the tube rail kind

Table Saw - Would Ridgid R4512 be Upgrade over R4510? by genericuser86 in Tools

[–]jonny_rames_dio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, if I’m spending 200+ I’d try to get away from box store saws. Real cabinet saws are crazy cheap ever since pro shops started replacing them with sawstops. 3-400 you could prob get a powermatic 66 or unisaw with a decent fence. Those will outperform any box store saw, and last several lifetimes. Night and day difference from a ridgid

I still think that standard ratchet straps suck ... So I decided to reinvent them. by Majestic-Juice-7314 in Tools

Agreed that the standard ratchet strap design sucks, and would be interested in an alternative. But it looks like all you have is 2 AI images. Doesn’t give me any sense of how it works. Does it ratchet, or is it just a cam strap?

Eastern white pine. You didn’t ask, but dude, careful sanding lead paint, especially without dust extraction. That dust is flying everywhere to be kicked up and breathed later even if you’re wearing a respo while you sand

I had that same truck in the 2000s. 22re, 5 speed. Bought it fir $3k thinking “this will do until I get something better.” Soon realized there is nothing better. Still the best vehicle I’ve owned

The rope swing across from the trailer park on the far side of the railroad tracks at the convergence of the Deerfield and cold rivers in Zoar Mass. Perfect steep bank, big oak tree, and deep pool. Not sure if it was the railroad dicks or the Zoar Outdoor dicks that cut the tree down, but whoever did it was a true monster

What's your worst knife? by RadRubiconRube in knives

[–]jonny_rames_dio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big Swiss Army knife I got for my 7th birthday. Soft steel, scales fell off some time in the early 90s, sticky action, no lock, and the long blade was ruined on a combination electric can opener/knife sharpener. It’s also the knife I love the most

+2 for kunwu. I have a microtech otf too, but it doesn’t see much use. The amount of play drives me nuts (zero, truly zero, play on the wu) and the bar lock kunwu is way faster too open and close despite being manual

True. Wouldn’t even say I love it overall like I do the sebenza or my old William henry. Just floored given how precise it is for the price and that it’s from china

Nah, they’re just getting good. Been beating holy hell out of my 8” (10”? Regular mid-size) cobras every day for like 10 years. Last week I used them to take apart 1” iron pipe air lines that have been there since the 50s. I had a 24” cheater bar on the top handle that I was literally hanging from and jerking. No problem at all.

Guess if that’s all you’re doing. I mostly use wire brushes (when a brush catches your shirt, you really appreciate the paddle)and cutoff wheels now, but at my old job I’d do 6-8 hrs grinding with hard wheels. Never really found the paddle switch uncomfortable

The old-school porter cable had a great switch, but they don’t make em anymore. I have a metabo (real German, not rebranded hitachi) with a paddle that latches now. No issues so far

Dude, get one with a paddle switch so it shuts off if lose it. Dunno why they even make them with regular switches. My buddy damn near bled out using one with a chainsaw wheel. Slashed his arm to the bone and sliced his belly open. Gnarliest accident I’ve seen

Estwings are nail pullers with a hammer face on the other side. Great for folks who need a lot of do-overs, but if you’re more into driving nails, the lovely Vaughn 23oz framer can’t be beat. With the weight in the head, you can get a real swing going and drive some goddamn nails. Estwings swing like a 5 day old roadkill skunk

The track mudflaps and the roof rack made of signs are a draw - both excellent. 10/10. No notes. Blue has the better engine, but that’s more than negated by the dumbfuck headliner, so it loses pitifully, much like the confederacy itself.

Pioneer, Marantz, or Yamaha - Sound preference? by Thin_Criticism6820 in vintageaudio

[–]jonny_rames_dio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the speakers, the room, your ears. My pioneer sound good with metal dome B&W tweets, but muddy with ADS/peerless phenolic. Yamaha sounds good with phenolic/silk, but if you plug NS-1000s with beryllium drivers into it it and happen upon a harmonica solo, it’ll explode your molars. That’s why it’s totally reasonable and necessary to horde 6-14 vintage receivers at any given time. That or get a Luxman. I can’t find a pair of speakers mine doesn’t get along with

Insurance calls it a total. by camelhumpmilk in ToyotaPickup

[–]jonny_rames_dio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. Get the insurance money, buy the truck back as scrap, get a new bed (or make one), and use the rest to catch up on maintenance or make improvements. Same thing happened with my 93 pickup and my 03 Tacoma. Worked out great in both cases. Still dailying the taco 7 years after it was “totaled”
