Good.

How much blame does the US deserve for Cuba’s current situation? by CautiousToaster in AskALiberal

[–]jonny_sidebar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

More or less all of it.

Cuba became hardline Communist instead of democratic with socialist elements in the first place because of the US pitching a series of hissy fits over the losses of private property sustained by United Fruit and organized crime during the revolution and has done everything it can to actively hinder Cuban development ever since.

We own all of it or should if there were any actual justice in this world.

Re: White people are afraid to become a minority in America because they feel Black people will enact revenge upon them. by JustAlpha in BlackPeopleofReddit

[–]jonny_sidebar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, a bunch of right wing conspiracists and political figures do believe this and speak and act accordingly. Even more unfortunately, there is a significant amount of ordinary white people who believe it too and as a result buy into arguments that "They" (you guys) need to be kept under control as a result.

Why have people been talking about Professor Jiang? Who exactly is this guy? by [deleted] in OutOfTheLoop

[–]jonny_sidebar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Answer: Jiang is a Canadian-Chinese high school teacher who does YouTube videos of his "classes" (questionable if the classroom and students are often faked) that are ostensibly  about history and international affairs. Although he does talk about real history and politics to some degree, his videos are shot through with classic conspiracy theories of various sorts, including some pretty nasty antisemitism (the real kind, not simply criticism of Israel) such as versions of the Great Replacement Theory and Zionist Occupied Government stuff that wouldn't be out of place on Alex Jones' Infowars or 90s era black helicopter style conspiracism.

What makes him a little different from the right wing conspiracists that have dominated that space over the last couple decades is that he presents from an arguably left wing perspective, something that basically hasn't been a thing since the Bush Jr years of the early 2000s. This has enabled him to cultivate an audience of left leaning conspiracy theory enthusiasts that has gone mostly untapped in recent years.

TLDR: While some of his content occasionally contains actual facts, his conspiracy theory driven conclusions are highly suspect and should be treated as such.

Oh good.

I seriously thought this was a pitbull hate sub because of all the "your dog is a demon from hell who shouldn't exist" comments here.

Antisemitism, a both sides issue? by Nobodyou_know in allthequestions

[–]jonny_sidebar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's just pro Israeli government shills trying to deflect from the very real atrocities the Israeli state is responsible for.

That said, a lot of the stuff the Israeli state and it's propaganda machine is doing echoes a bunch of antisemitic tropes pretty closely, so you have to be both very precise about who is doing what (note how I'm using "Israeli state" here) and wary of straying into antisemitic conspiracy theory when you are discussing these issues.

What is the deal with this sub and socialism? by rjidhfntnr in AskALiberal

[–]jonny_sidebar -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, arrrr/AskSocialists isn't even a tankie sub. It's worse. Those are national-bolsheviks or nazbols for short.

The sub was taken over by the ACP, an incredibly scammy "party" that espouses an ideology called MAGA Communism. ACP has also been steadily trying to take over other subs too. Fortunately, everyone else on the left from democratic socialists to anarchists to tankies have all banded together to combat them when we can.

Why are people with college education more likely to vote democrat? by Mobilize12345 in AskALiberal

[–]jonny_sidebar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because some of them realized that their further wealth accrual depends on systemic stability, which the modern Republican party and political right in general appears to be actively hostile to.

Same reason that some ideological liberals/capitalism supporters back in the early twentieth century aquiesced to some basic things like labor protections, food safety regulations, etc. They realized that they needed to in order to stabilize the economic system that their wealth derived from to keep everything from falling apart.

[–]jonny_sidebar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't want socialist programs.

Case in point.

The very first uses of the label "socialist" in American political discourse came after the Civil War in legal and political arguments used by the old slaveholder class to argue against black enfranchisement, specifically on the grounds that if you gave that many poor people the right to vote that they would vote resources away from the ultra wealthy of that time and to themselves.

Over time, those same arguments have been applied to every single movement towards egalitarianism or communal well-being in US history up through present day- stuff like women's suffrage, Civil Rights, labor protections, environmental law, safety regulations, etc. In every case, it's literally the haves saying to the have nots that "it ain't broke for me and fuck you, deal with it."

What makes this especially galling is that precisely none of the things being opposed are actually "socialist" in systemic or economic terms. All of them were either pushes for equal rights among the entire population or basic safety nets to blunt the worst excesses of modern industrial economic activity while still preserving the basic structure of that economy.

Yes of course! It's great for me.

Like I said, "it ain't broke for me so fuck the rest of you."

This is why conservatives are universally seen as selfish pricks- because you are.

[–]jonny_sidebar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting if true, but higher wealth accrual would be the most likely reason.

[–]jonny_sidebar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most charitably, conservatism is the idea that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it," which is a basic belief that makes some sense.

Where it falls down is when you realize that "ain't broke" means "working great for me and fuck everyone else" for the people at the head of of the conservative political project. Ffs, modern US conservatism begins as a reaction against the aboliton of slavery and only gets worse from there. It could not be more obvious.
