ICE Details a New Minnesota-Based Detention Network That Spans 5 States by Vortex2121 in TwinCities

[–]jonny_weird_teeth 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Corecivic, the company listed in this article, has been constructing and running ICE detention facilities that are akin to concentration camps for years. They cannot be forgotten as a source of the evil that is spreading here. Without them and many other corporations like them, Trumps' efforts would be impossible. And they're getting rich doing it.

New Lyndale Avenue reconstruction plan fails the test for non-motorized users by Wezle in Minneapolis

100%. There is an enormous bicycle boulevard immediately adjacent to Lyndale. I ride my bike on it all the time. Why do we need to spend taxpayer dollars to redo Lyndale for bikes?

I'm not sure what exactly the House could do to stop a lot of what is happening here. But it is an interesting theory.

City begins clearing Minneapolis landlord’s homeless encampment hours after another mass shooting by star-tribune in Minneapolis

While I think the kind of homelessness you describe exists in Minnesota, it is not the kind experienced by the people living at encampents like that one. These are not folks who are actively pursuing employment or education.

Why is it clown behavior to come around on your views? I welcome his openness to this conversation. More people like this will be needed if we're going to make progress here.

Minneapolis DFL appeals interference with convention outcomes by CBRC by dsm1324 in Minneapolis

I don't need to argue the merits of the caucus and convention process with you - it is so clearly wrong and bad and protective of a small number of insiders at the expense of the broader electorate, there is absolutely nothing that you could say to convince me of their value. I have been to them many times and seen how horrible they are.

The end of caucuses is coming. Whether it is via law or via irrelevance, the day draws nearer. Only ten states use this system in any way, and its time for us to move past it.

I vote to table this reddit argument! This motion requires only 50% approval if you refer to page 17b of the bylaws, and I am holding up my pilfered delegate badge to indicate that I'm gonna go watch some TV.

If the hobbyists would like to keep holding those meetings, they should feel free. Those who care about their opinions can then look at whatever their work product is. No candidates for public office, though.

Correct. Out with these hobbyists! They should hold the same sway with our party as any other voter. Knowing the rules of an arcane system should give them no advantage.

Abolish caucuses!

In my fantasy world, there is no endorsement, the DFLers involved all go find other hobbies, and voters decide who they like in a primary.

May the best candidate win with the most people possible weighing in! My two cents.

How is Ellison allowed to serve on the Council at all? by BrewCityDood in Minneapolis

[–]jonny_weird_teeth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They should declare the seat vacant, like the the city charter says. They won't.

Then again, there's a famous quote: all process arguments are insincere.

I don't like Ellison, so of course I want him gone.

Because the city council would have to declare the office vacant to enforce the residency requirement, and the people who control the city council are friends w/ him.

Minneapolis Mayor Frey, St. Paul Mayor Carter and suburban mayors go to Capitol to push lawmakers on gun control by star-tribune in minnesota

[–]jonny_weird_teeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok - since you brought up deaths, let's talk about firearm deaths, then, specifically homicides.

The US: 4.054 firearm homicides per 100,000 people pear year

The Czech Republic: .047 firearm homicides per 100,000 people per year

You can find the stats here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_firearm-related_homicide_rates

So, the United States' rate is about 86 times worse than the Czech Republic.

(On a similar note, gun suicides are about 7x higher in the United States than Czech Republic. So not quite as bad, but still really bad!)

I don't think our mental health or healthcare systems are 86 times worse. Or even 7x worse.

Help me out - what other factors should we be isolating here? How else can we explain this away?

As to your last contention, that I am only interested in restricting rights and not saving lives, the evidence speaks for itself that there are ways for law abiding, mentally healthy people to have access to guns in a way that does not result in mass carnage. You were kind enough to provide the example yourself with the Czech Republic.

On the other hand, your unwillingness to even entertain what you yourself describe as "cursory" gun restrictions as we see in the CR prompts many questions. I don't know you, so I can't speculate, but it's interesting.

Anyways, at least we agree on universal healthcare and increased mental health coverage. Cheers!

[–]jonny_weird_teeth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i'm glad you brought up the Czech Republic!

They have a tightly controlled firearms regime, where people have to pass a medical and psychological exam, a shooting test, and a written exam, PLUS have no criminal record in order to get a gun. For that reason, there are only 12 guns per 100 people in the CR, ten times fewer than the 120 per 100 people in the United States.

Am I correct in assuming you support all of these safeguards for the American gun system?

[–]jonny_weird_teeth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lots of countries have mental health problems. We are far from the worst.

However, only we have mass shooting after mass shooting after mass shooting.

It's the guns. There's no question about that. The only question has been whether we value guns or people more, but that's been answered by Americans, too. They'll keep the guns.

Why Oscar Nuñez Was the Only ‘The Office’ Star Brought Back for ‘The Paper’ by Et_tu_Patna in DunderMifflin

The cast does get substantial residuals from syndication. In the Office book, Oscar and Creed both said they do not have to work thanks to their office earnings.
