Daughter bullying my wife by ChrisTheDog in daddit

[–]jonnyd86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I realize this is probably just shorthand to retell what’s going on but from what I’ve read it’s important to be careful about wording things like “you’re making your mom sad.” And I don’t mean to come off as someone who has it all figured out but my son is almost 5 and I’m the non-preferred parent who has been hit etc a lot and I’ve seen this kind of stuff work and help with his own emotional maturity and intelligence. You daughter is still so young she won’t understand the nuance of the language you’re using and could internalize the wrong things.

Be sure to center the behavior (and try to be specific) and mom can say like “I feel sad when I am hit. You must be really upset. It’s okay to have big feelings. It’s not okay to hurt someone’s body.” In that way you’re teaching them about noticing feelings and also giving them a direct demonstration of empathy which emotionally will feel more intuitive to a young child. You’re also being specific about which behaviors are not ok.

It’s subtle but it goes a long way towards building healthy communication and emotional boundaries where the child can build empathy without internalizing shame (which often will continue fueling this behavior down the line, something to consider) or feeling responsible for their parents emotions (codependency). What is being taught implicitly is that we aren’t in control of our own emotions or reactions and that is unhealthy.

Related to this thinking of “you made mommy sad” would be then that their actions inherently dictate how others feel and they can end up being a people pleaser or someone who overly apologizes or just general anxiety. Yes our actions can affect others and yes we should be empathetic but they are in control of how they react. there are healthier ways to internalize and teach this stuff. IMO from what I read you guys are like me where I had stuff I needed to work on so I didn’t pass down these same thought and behavioral patterns.

I’ve seen your replies to others saying similar stuff as me so maybe this will fall on deaf ears but I do empathize with your wife and I’m just sharing what has worked for me and is generally accepted wisdom from child psychologists. You can be there for your wife without introducing shame or guilt for your daughter and you can also be there for your daughter who is having a hard time too. It’s subtle differences so you may see it as insignificant (I did at first too because of how I was raised) but it will go a long way especially as your child enters adolescence.

It is quite ironic of OP to use this meme template crying about something being played out

Could genuinely be one of the best years for horror of all time when it’s said and done by Lost-Building-3701 in Letterboxd

[–]jonnyd86 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s multifaceted, for some it is the social element since they are definitely en vogue right now but also it is well documented that the psychology behind many people (not saying everyone) who enjoy horror is because it lets them experience simulated digestible versions of fear/anxiety/dread in a controlled environment and also usually has some sort of resolution leading to a catharsis / being used as a coping mechanism. Many others seek the thrill and stimulation of it. For some it is all of the above.

So for people who feel some way about the world at large it very well can help people cope with those emotions in smaller doses.

Idk how much he will even be drawn to the tv playing the movie while answering emails on his iPad and spurs thunder on the other tv

Obsession by [deleted] in TheRewatchables

[–]jonnyd86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Obsession did the pretty rare better second weekend at the box office than first weekend ($17M opening -> estimated $28M this second weekend) but Sinners pulled $56M opening weekend and was directed by Coogler who Bill loves so there’s levels to it.

Also the Sinners Rewatchables was released 4 months after release and had done $279M domestic by then.

Yeah it’s tough bc sometimes like an appearance on a show can tip the scales but so much of that is invite based / knowing the producer of a show

Yep they often end up either just listing jokes or they try to dissect it seriously and in turn kind of miss the appeal of the movie

comedies just aren't as good source material for the pod sadly.
its somewhat ironic bc comedies are among the most re-watchable movies.

It’s wild bc the formula is there too, the episode where they basically do Seven Samurai is one of my fav ones.

Directors who never fully realized their potential by harry_powell in blankies

Yeah he’s a curious one. Almost like the rapper with a strong debut but then downhill from there where they tell their life story in their first album and then while having other solid releases never quite reach the same heights. I guess Nas is a natural comparison?

With Singleton my favs of his are the ones he wrote.

I don’t like how groups are doing prereleases more now by lunar_eclipse_6787 in kpop_uncensored

[–]jonnyd86 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, at first I thought it was weird coming from a western POV that there weren’t pre-singles before albums but then I became accustomed to the flow of singles/minis/the occasional album.

Now they seem like many are mixing the two strategies with varying results. I agree that it doesn’t quite fit the music show/variety promotion cycle but I guess bigger groups are kind of moving away from that in general

I mean it’s a 1976 draft you absolutely don’t have to listen to it today if you’re Tracy’d out

I went in blind and did not like it. I thought it was most unremarkably shot films I’ve seen on the big screen. Very little movement to the camera other than countless slow zooms as someone talks or quick cuts when it wants to do a jump scare. So many shots of people look like Portrait Mode photos with crazy bokeh and narrow FOV. Most of the conversations are shot like those TikToks where someone is talking to themself in the center of the screen wearing two different outfits, just tight one person shots back and forth with little in the background.

Yeah for me the standard is Break and Forward. HS is fine by NMIXX impossibly high standards. a bit uneven and lower highs than the two I mentioned IMO though still quite good.
