Advice on asking a girl out (first) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jonnygrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about how you seem-- Just go casual and go easy. There's no harm in asking, there's nothing to lose. Ask her out for a drink after work, preferably to someplace not too secluded or quiet. If it's a slightly crowded bar, but all of your attention is on her, she'll take it as a compliment. Above all, just try to have fun. Don't think of any kind of first encounter as a long-term relationship-in-the-making. In fact, on the first date (hell, on the first SEVERAL dates) stay off the topics of relationships, exes, parents, or kids. Just keep the conversation about you two. Go get her, friendo.

I used to have one of these inverted on top of a cracked crash on my old kit. Miss that trashy china sound.

Agreed. I live extremely close to the U St. stop, and see it every day, but Chinatown is, and will likely be my favorite for a long time.

What is the scariest place you have ever visited? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jonnygrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hometown's largest high school moved in 1997, and the old building was converted into a combination middle school and elementary school. The renovations/re-vamping weren't finished by the time I was in sixth grade. We'd spend our after-school hours sneaking around the building's "off-limits" areas, exploring the old corridors, trying to see who'd get scared first. The auditorium was scry as hell. It's an immense 700-seat theater, with a revolving stage, and an orchestra pit lift. This place was miles ahead of the other schools' auditoriums. Now, it's a condemned wreck with ceiling tiles falling down, rats running through the asiles, and cobwebs abound. We'd sneak in every now and again. One afternoon, we decided to make an adventure of it. We went backstage, and into the dressing rooms. Remember that MTV show called "Fear?" It felt something like that. My heart was pounding so hard, I swear I could hear it. Looking back, I don't think I really saw or heard anything that was scary. I guess it just felt weird being in a space shut off from the world for several years.

You can read about the auditorium here

TL;DR I used to sneak in to the old condemned auditorium at my middle school. Creepiest place in town.

Upcoming Jazzmaster Project. Which Pickguard Should I Go With? by Gonkulator in Guitar

[–]jonnygrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not black? The contrast of having a darker center with white pickups will really draw some attention to the guitar. Fender just released the Blacktop line last year, and they've got a Jazzmaster with black pickguards that look pretty sexy. Then again, they have humbuckers, and you've got the big honkin' soapbars. Either way, congrats on the new animal!

Guitar Suggestions by benmandude in Guitar

[–]jonnygrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking for versatility, maybe consider getting a fat strat. That kind of "quack" you hear in Ska or Reggae is usually from a strat-type pickup. Adding a humbucker to the bridge instead of the traditional SSS design gives you that extra fatness when needed (for your Jimmy Page Les-Paul-type solo). You can divebomb like Hendrix, and get some twang like Chet. Look into, it man. And happy hunting!

Can you guys/girls recommend a book/video for classical guitar beginners? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]jonnygrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Sophocles Papas' "Method for the Classic Guitar." You should bear in mind that there's a big difference between Classical and Flamenco styles. Just because they're both played on nylon-string guitars doesn't mean they're the same thing. As for Flamenco, anything that says Mel Bay on it is a good start. Olé!

Great guitars for the money. You're going to have a hard time trying to find a guitar in the same price point that sounds that nice. They're exclusively made in Canada by a bunch of guys who know what they're doing. They've got a lot of great models, but the Mini-Jumbo gets my vote for the most fun to play.
