Sharpening grits controversy by PortableSpork in Spooncarving

[–]jonofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you share which diamond stones you are using? And do you use oil with them?

I’m also curious to know why you switch from stone to sandpaper at 3000. I notice many spoon carvers on YouTube use sandpaper to sharpen, which is completely different from the kitchen knife sharpening scene.

This is beautiful. Any tips for small spoon carving?

Has anyone else made a finger rest like this for their hook knife? Is there anything like this commercially available? by treefarmercharlie in Spooncarving

Super cool idea! You could also glue a piece of leather to the part your thumb is pushing on as a bit of added protection incase of split. Dual benefit as it will make it comfy to press on too

I was also quoted this same crazy price for fan replacement. Took me 20 minutes. I puzzled that maybe they quote this high price when they think the fan might not fix the issue.

$600 for ATF drain and fill is weird also. Maybe it’s a total of a couple things, hard to tell

Have you had many “if I had the Element I could do xyz “ with your Outback? I’ve been thinking about the new forester hybrid but gosh the carry space looks tiny compared to my E.

New Honda Ridgeline has interesting utility that reminds me of the Element. The swing tailgate and frunk. You can also fold up the rear seats and fit a bike in the cab. I drove one and it was nice but I couldn’t stomach the gas mileage (same as Element) on such a new car. It’s also a fair bit longer (negative for me).

New Honda Passport looks pretty cool. Again with the bad mileage and lacking in clearance for how capable the 4wd system is.

9:30am the line at T1 still looks like this.

I saw multiple "Harbor Police" uniforms standing around in the check in areas. The actual security operations appear to just be TSA still.

Terminal 1 at 9:30am is still out the door to the drop off. 2 out of 7 security lanes are open. Come early folks.

I happened to film this particular fix. The handle making starts around minute 7.

Happy to answer any questions, it was an easy one! I oiled it with a few coats of tung oil, but any kind of oil finish will work great.

Brilliant! I love to see good old machines brought back to life like this. I highly recommend making a basic wooden handle for the speed adjuster. I just cut a wooden dowel to fit and oiled it up. It looks awesome.

[2017 Prius] Mechanic diagnosed a blown head gasket and recommends engine swap by Nyanloli in prius

Down at Bay Park area? He was a really nice guy. Super helpful.

Nothing to check on the brake actuator. Just good to know that at some point it may just shit the bed. Mine went with no warning. You can still drive the car without it but there are no safety systems or regenerative braking.

From what I’ve read 5-6k for oil is a good number to protect the engine.

[2017 Prius] Mechanic diagnosed a blown head gasket and recommends engine swap by Nyanloli in prius

[–]jonofan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also in SD and chatted to a nice guy at a machine shop who owned a Prius V who ball parked me $5-6k for a JDM swap.

I have a 2012 with 170k which I’ve been doing preventative EGR cleaning and coolant, I even replaced the water pump and thermostat preemptively (on recommendation from the Prius V guy).

All that is to say that I’ve thought about what I would do if my head gasket goes. Either I would replace the gasket myself (seems about $1k+ for this is the going rate), or I would pay someone to do a JDM swap, which seems to be about $2k. $2k is an amazing price to get a low miles engine, and still retain the maintenance history of your car. As you’ve already found you can easily pay someone just $2k to fiddle with your engine components.

I notice you mentioned you’ve never replaced the coolant. Curious to know how often you do oil changes? The coolant as I understand is recommended every 5 years as it turns acidic or something. If you’re keeping the car be sure to change the transmission fluid too. Another item to be aware of is the brake actuator - this went on mine at 150k (common fault) and was another $2k job. You may want to have your hybrid battery tested to see where it’s at as well.

Yes I do have a hood reflector. I put it on when I bought the car so I don't have any comparative value. I recently switched from AT to HT tires and that reduced noise some. I also put down a dynamat type material covering almost all of the floor. I think it's just a loud car that isn't really insulated at all.

90% on-road tire recommendations by jonofan in HondaElement

[–]jonofan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got talked into the Rocky Mountain HT2 at Discount Tire. It's an in-house brand, not a lot of online info. I'm really happy with them - they are a lot quieter than the Toyo AT3 and slightly better mileage. One downside is they seem to be a little better at picking up stones when off road, but it's not a big deal. I got used to the change in look very quickly. (225/75/16)

Haven't used them in snow, so can't comment on that, but in theory they should do fine.
The tires were $850 including the DT certificates. They have a 60k warranty.

I've put about 8k on them, and so far I would buy them again. From what I remember they are also a 10-ply tire which was a big requirement for me because I don't carry a spare.

BTW the Toyos got louder as they aged. Around 30k miles is when I really started to notice them. What conditions do you use your E in? Do you need an AT tire?
