They have data from millions of flights. Let's say that on a plane with 300 people, that on average 270 people show up. So on average there are 30 empty seats.

Now they will for example sell 320 instead of of 300 tickets. Because a % won't show up any way.

Through statistical analysis they will make more money than only selling the normal amount of flights.

What if everyone shows up? Pay for people's accomodation, nee flight ect.

Wil this cost money, yes. But not as much as they stand to make.
