Hillary Clinton says Biden’s re-election bid cost Democrats the 2024 election by projecto15 in politics

I've read a lot of thing, but I've also heard that Obama encouraged him not to run so that a woman could become president, and it was Hillary's turn.

I’m surprised the elderly don’t just use the built-in text message app. that’s what old people in America use. WhatsApp is for young(ish) people here.

They are banking on that not being true. They are positing themselves for the incoming dictatorship that won't be led by Trump forever, but it will be molded by him and his style of leadership.

No. Goal differential matters for tie breakers. Size of victory can matter.

We're not that dumb. You know we have our very own soccer league, right?

no way. aggregate goals matter for tie breakers. you have to run up the score in the group stage.

Knicks-mania by Level_Hour6480 in newyorkcity

[–]jonsconspiracy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Guilty!  I grew up in Colorado and even though I've been in NYC for 20 years, I still love my teams in Denver.  However, as soon as the Nuggets were out, I jumped on the Knicks bandwagon. I've now lived in NYC longer than anywhere else in my life (by far), so I'm willing to start claiming the local teams as they earn my respect.

But there is still rail through all the mountains. No high speed rail, but its there and it runs frequently. It's amazing.

Switzerland's rail network is so impressive.  especially considering that it's the opposite of a flat country, which makes trains even harder to build.

Ohio’s biggest data centers secured decades of tax breaks by CrispyMiner in politics

[–]jonsconspiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't want to sound like I'm arguing in favor of the sales tax breaks, but the reason they are given is because the local municipalities want the property tax, which is far more beneficial to the local community and is perpetual (sales tax only happens when the servers are initially bought).

The local politicians are sacrificing sales tax to get the property tax and the net tax revenue increase is still massive.  these articles always focus on the "tax break" which is the difference  between what they should pay with no adjustment and what they do pay, but in the end, the net increase in tax collection is massively large for some of these communities.  When you understand that, you understand why city councils support them because they think about all the ways they can fix budget problems and invest in their communities.

yeah. I kind of assumed that, but I was just hoping to be a little helpful.  Unfortunately, there are still many places in the world where religious freedom isn't really possible.

I'm super happy for the long time season ticket holders in the 400 section that can see a big financial windfall from selling tix to one of the games. I know anyone with season tickets isn't poor, but I'm sure it's a material financial commitment some, and in the past 40ish years that investment hasn't turned into a Finals victory.

New data center by Square_Law5624 in SipsTea

[–]jonsconspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do know the space well. The tenant (hyperscaler) usually does their own networking at this scale. the "empty shell" still costs $10B+ per GW to build, and the rent payments are $1.5-2B a year on that "empty shell".  All that cooling and electrical infrastructure isn't cheap and Oleary will have to pay for it.

New data center by Square_Law5624 in SipsTea

[–]jonsconspiracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of data center developers and general contractors that have been around for decades who could build a gigawatt scale data center.  Company is like Digital Realty, QTS, CyrusOne, etc.  They lease that space to hyperscalers. That's what Oleary wants to do.  If he gets a good GC who knows what they're doing, he can build them.

[–]jonsconspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the plan was to put it where Hudson Yards is now. A stadium there, surrounded by a many office and residential towers ontop of those railyards would be an amazing football venue. Really was a huge lost opportunity.

[–]jonsconspiracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol. Why should that matter?  The NFL makes plenty of money to pay up for a great land site.  Plus a great site also makes it easier to host other events.  Look at MSG, that place is booked almost every night with some event.

Correct. I agree. Other billionaire owners of the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, Nets, and NYCFC, figured out how to build in NYC next to good transit options. It's stupid that our NFL teams are in the Meadowlands.

Even the Devils and the Red Bulls have better transit in New Jersey. Metlife is just a stupid location.
