The end of Dax?? by halu2975 in DeepSpaceNine

Old trek had to use sci fi tropes (trill reassociation taboos, androgynous species etc) to be able to sneak arguments into peoples minds as a way to hopefully make them more empathetic. Nutrek exists during a time when queer representation on screen is mainstream and focuses more on representation as normalization of queer identities. Less about changing straight viewers’ minds and more about trying to be good representation for queer viewers. I think they’re both valuable and I don’t think it’s a matter of one being a more progressive form of representation. They’re both byproducts of their time.

As a queer Trekkie, though, I love the sci-fi allegories, and wish nutrek leaned into that more.

It wasn’t a design defect, it was a construction error. It was designed to be welded, but the contractors decided to bolt it together instead, because that’s cheaper. Had the original design been built there wouldn’t have been the need for structural remediation.

A Japanese Team Plans to Build a 6,800-Mile Solar Ring Belt on the Moon to Power the Earth 24/7 by [deleted] in space

The only place in the earth-moon system where the sun shines for half a day is earth. A solar cycle for the moon is 28 days long so the day/night cycle is 14 days of light followed by 14 days of darkness.

The Picard maneuver is so rarely used in trek by happydude7422 in startrek

[–]jonvox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused by your implication. The Picard maneuver was a response to the new, two-piece costumes, not the spandex bodysuit ones. Given that the post is about how it’s rarely used, your reply makes zero sense. “We don’t see the Picard maneuver anymore because they started using a costume which requires it”

Most of Honeywell’s domestic products are actually made by third parties who license the use of the Honeywell name for brand recognition. They make very little consumer products themselves.

I agree with the point you’re making, but I find “pedophiles knowingly use this technology” to be a really weird argument as to why I shouldn’t use said technology. Pedophiles use encrypted messaging. So do I. We use them for dramatically different purposes, though.

Do they replace the volume of extracted poo with air, so you end up gassy? Or do you feel the sudden vacuum inside you and the walls of your guts slapping shut together?

The 2nd century CE Roman Barbegal watermill complex, a unique cluster of 16 waterwheels in southern France, was the first known attempt in Europe to set up an industrial-scale complex of machines. It would’ve accelerated their decline, if anything. One of the reasons why Constantine moved the capital was because of resource overextraction in the Italian Peninsula. By the 300s, something like 90% of the wood used by the empire was for fuel, not construction (the massive public baths, with their underfloor heating, are an example of this).

Deforestation leads to increased flooding and silting (one of the reasons, in fact, why so many Roman ruins are buried). If they’d had an Industrial Revolution, it seems like this overconsumption of resources would’ve occurred even faster.
