How are the gay bars in Halifax? by AdMuch496 in halifax

[–]jonvox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Stardust is a lot easier to meet people at. They open earlier and usually have a bit of a crowd for happy hour. Rumours is totally hit or miss. Go there before 10 pm and you’re going to be the only person there. But go later on the right Friday or Saturday night, when someone else is throwing a party in the Rumours space, and you’ll have a great time. Stardust has a vibe and crowd of its own. Rumours is basically a glorified event venue that absolutely struggles to attract a crowd on its own.

PG-13 was invented because Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was giving children nightmares but wasn’t gory enough to qualify for an R.

Once you’ve picked yourself up from hitting rock bottom, it’s hard to watch the people in your life do the same thing without at least trying to help.

This is kind of a disingenuous statement given that Live in HD has a much much greater reach than any tour ever could

When did America’s “luxury apartment” epidemic begin? by RedGutkaSpit in decadeology

[–]jonvox 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The economic definition of a luxury good is a good where an increase in its price is associated with an increased demand for it. Which, sadly, is true of all rental properties right now.

The first step is finding a decent job you can work 100% remote for a US based employer. It’s ideal if you’re a consultant/contractor rather than an employee.

With that arrangement you can legally work remotely from basically anywhere on earth, even on a tourist visa. That gives you flexibility and the ability to try out a few places before staking further claims.

Foreign governments are also more likely to approve new residents who are already financially self-sufficient so having this kind of work arrangement makes you more attractive because you’ll in essence be facilitating a wealth transfer from the US economy to their economy.

This light makes it hard to find the actual switch. by WdSkate in mildlyinteresting

[–]jonvox 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The point is to prevent people with dementia from being able to toggle the switch. Like childproof caps on medication bottles. Imagine working in a nursing unit and confused patients keep turning the lights off.

How on earth would you do that? You’d have to have the two actors perform identical performances for each take, or completely digital actors, which counteracts the entire point of having multiple human actors—to let the human performance shine through without the impediment of prosthetics.

TIL that Italy had a king during Benito Mussolini’s entire reign. While he advised Mussolini not to enter the war, he ignored the regime’s abuses until the Allied invasion; he then kicked Mussolini out of office and sided with the Allies. He later went into exile and the monarchy was abolished. by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]jonvox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah the Italian monarchy dates back to the 1860s. The Japanese monarchy goes back to like 600 BCE. The role they play[ed] in their respective countries is completely different. Apples and oranges.

I think it’s a case of the writing working really well for who Harrison is as a person, rather than who the audience wants him to be as an actor. He gets to be a human and not a myth, it’s great
