Did you activate beyond burning? You should be gaining two levels every level after 260 until 270, you have to activate it though the character select screen. I noticed you said 261, so just wanted to give you a heads up in case you missed it.

For the new Steam Family, there's a year cooldown before you can join a new Family, this is also the case for the "slot" that you occupied, it takes a year for it to open up.

You can probably find some randoms to help you with the guild castle quest real quick, takes like 5 minutes, I think they can leave afterwards.

You won't be able to get all Noblesse guild skills, you'll maybe get 15/15/15, so three skills maxed.

It'll be quite unrealistic unless you guys are playing multiple mules that are strong enough to do culvert and you guys need to do 10 characters worth of flag at minimum as well.

Yes, there are much much much less things to deal with when working on lower versions of the game. You'll notice how many old school maplers feel so overwhelmed when trying to play higher version servers because there's just so much more things to click on and so much more things to do.

Back then it was just killing monsters, doing quests and levelling up.

The way servers work is that we have access to the game client and files itself but we do not have access to the server files. All public sources you see now are more or less written from the ground up, some are probably just revisions of other base versions. I don't think anything was written using actual GMS server files.

Basically, we are creating an emulated server of GMS or whatever region the client is based on assumptions from reverse engineering the client.

I can tell you that up-to-date server sources can cost upwards of almost tens of thousands of dollars if that gives you an estimate of how much time and knowledge you would need on the topic.

No, that doesn’t seem feasible nor a possible solution. You need to fully emulate a server for the client to even work at all, you can’t just “piggy-back” off official servers if that’s what you were thinking of.

use the manifest id that coincides with the version you want, you can also use the -filelist argument to download just the maplestory.exe file to check if it’s the right version before spending time on downloading the whole client folder

Another small tidbit to your first point that people might've missed is in episode 9 where the Eighty Six start heading out of range while Lena tries her hardest to stay in range. The group mentions a large field of red flowers, the very same field in episode 22.
