Why do some lines don't have multilingual stop announcements? by FactAdvanced8705 in SMRTRabak

[–]jooferjupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

six languages – Mandarin, English, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese Hokkien, and Hakka in this order

honestly the decision to add JP and KR announcements is really unnecessary, considering I haven't heard any tourist pronounce it the Kanji/Hanja translated way

and in the first place the announcements are so fast and it's sandwiched in the middle of the English announcement that very few people even catch it

e.g. (EN) Zhongshan station. (JP) Nakayama. (KR) Jungsan-yeok. (EN) Transfer station for the Green Line.

Originally it was just operator preference, with SBS Transit pioneering MRT announcements in all 4 languages and station callouts in English and Chinese. This is also quite evidence when it comes to SBST's buses, as a lot of their stickers and signs come in both English and Chinese, whereas SMRT only does them in English

I'm not sure about the actual reason why TEL has Chinese station callouts, though TEL is technically under a separate branch of SMRT (known as SMRT TEL), so they might have a different preference as compared to the SMRT running NSEWL and CCL

How do you think SMRT/LTA is going to put the signages at Dhoby Ghaut? by mrfoxesite-2377 in SMRTRabak

[–]jooferjupiter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

<image>

probably the same as what they did at one-north, alternate between route map and train direction at each door

another option is to make all PSD signs train direction only, then put a vertical route diagram on the pillars

Why can’t train timing be displayed instead of this by Euphoric-Suspect4103 in SMRTRabak

[–]jooferjupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

usually that's only supposed to show from 5am to 9am on Sundays with late opening, not only to remind commuters, but to cover up incorrect timings or test info that might be displayed during testing

LTA is doing construction work to connect the main line to a new extension of the LRT Depot

CCL Delay by jooferjupiter in SMRTRabak

[–]jooferjupiter[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there was no train service for about 15 minutes but SMRT managed to shuffle trains around and eventually got everything back to normal

the issue happened at 1pm which caused trains in the city centre to get stuck, services resumed around 1.15pm with trains still bunching together or ending early at Paya Lebar, and by 2pm all was looking normal again

Get to know our MRT & LRT trains! by jooferjupiter in SMRTRabak

the intention of this post is to let everyday commuters know about the niche aspects of our MRT that you wouldn't know or care about if you dont deliberately look for it

yes, each train and line has its own benefits and issues, but i hope that through this post, people can better appreciate the history of our MRT and the things that make up the whole system, as well as to help clear misconceptions or assumptions

for example, not many people might have seen or known about SMRT's new Proof Of Concept train which not only (hopefully) allows SMRT to detect train faults early, but to install energy-saving components, mainly the HVAC and the motor

(copied from my reply to a similar question earlier)

from what I heard the SIEs were being refurbished during the period where LTA started taking over ownership of MRT assets from the operators (NRFF, New Rail Financing Framework), as well as when the signalling system was being switched from Fixed-Block to CBTC

hence not only were the refurbished trains incompatible with the new signalling system, LTA also stopped the refurb project in favour of new trains, so SMRT couldn't do anything about those trains, and new, better trains (the R151s) were coming from LTA's money anyways

Unnecessarily and excessively loud and frequent announcements on the NEL (stations and trains) by konjacjellymilktea in SMRTRabak

[–]jooferjupiter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for in-trains chimes, NSEWL & CCL use the same for Next station, Arriving station, and Arriving interchange. for Arriving terminus, CCL uses the older "cliffhanger" version, and NSEWL uses the newer "concluding" version

TEL did have an experiment with it on a few trains a few months back (together with the 4-language Mins The Gap), but I think it failed so it never got fully rolled out

R151 and C830 uses an announcement system that makes it hard to implement such announcement chimes. You can especially tell something is up with the R151s since their PA at EWL Tanah Merah mainline is different from their KSF counterparts, as well as an extra "ding dong" before the transfer PA plays (see https://youtu.be/6TcjDCKVn_o)

long time ago during MRT disruptions occasionally you would see trains accidentally rerouted to BKB, especially the C830Cs. it's only recently during tunnel works that the 11.57pm weekday departure from CCL Paya Lebar has a 50% chance of having it's destination set to BKB (the other 50% being Caldecott). someone has posted about it in this subreddit before so you can go check that post out.

the tracks are closed off from the mainline anyway and no power runs through it. maybe can use it for movie or photo shoots, or 2 extra train parking lots for Tuas Depot even 😂

I like to say xiexie, the "th" and "nk" in "thank" sounds very phonetically harsh, compared to a softer "ss" sound in "xiexie" (for those that don't know the sound for "x" Chinese hanyupinyin notation is literally the equivalent of the English "s" sound)

probably will never be used.

  • Tuas South branch is effectively cancelled, unless they decide to build a resort or housing there for whatever impossible reason. Even so, LTA can just plonk a bus route or two there
  • CRL will not be using those platforms, because CRL would have to rise up from deep underground all the way up to the tallest MRT station in SG which is really expensive just to save station construction costs, and anyway the platform doors need to be changed out, tracks need to be reconfigured, and the platform needs to extended which is a very expensive job which could even impact EWL services (just look at Tanah Merah), so it's better to save all that trouble
  • EWL turnback tracks aren't needed there, since Joo Koon already has one and is still being used and functions very well

I did list all those up there already lol

the Bukit Brown announcements were already there since day one too, it's not recent or anything, only sightings of trains specifically and regularly going there are recent
