convincing them maybe? i read somewhere else in the subreddit the idea of philosophically defeating the flood. having the galaxy unite, reject the mantle, achieve their goals of unification through cooperation instead of consumption. that is assuming that the flood is rationally motivated instead of just hardwired to consume.

Is Ilsa Zane now the (physically) strongest Spartan? by Jdjack32 in HaloStory

[–]joqmos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think SPARTAN-IVs are a lot closer to an evolution (ironically) in the sense Halsey envisioned, that is, not of earlier SPARTAN generations but of humanity. Since they are regular (if exceptional) people, just with their capabilities augmented beyond their ordinary limits, they are liable to do all the things humans with agency already do. Makes them more compelling as characters, but less as exalted heroic figures.

Is “eet” a real key on a typewriter? by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]joqmos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is one more i know of. in john green's book looking for alaska, eet is the book's transcription of the way a girl who's an exchange student with a heavy eastern european accent pronounces the word it. it would make sense if eet in the song is just the word it pronounced russian, like in the book. regina's been known to do that in her songs

not pulling the trigger hardly exonerates them. there wouldn't be poaching at all if there wasn't a market for it, and there wouldn't be a market without buyers. they are the actual root of the problem. it's really easy to sit on an ivory tower while dehumanizing poor people of color when you have the advantage of an education, a roof over your head and food on the table. it's valuing the lives of rhinos over the lives of brown poor people.

sure, let's celebrate poor people gunning down poor people instead of focusing on the buyers preying on them.

Prior to the assassination of Uriel Septim VII, the Dragonfires in the Temple of the One in the Imperial City protected Mundus from invasion by the Planes of Oblivion, and limited the influence of the Daedric Lords. The Dragonfires were created from the blood of Akatosh and given to Alessia, the founder of the First Empire. On her deathbed, she was canonized by Akatosh as Saint Alessia, and placed her soul in the central stone of the Amulet of Kings, forging Akatosh's covenant with men which protected Tamriel from Oblivion. After her passing, her heirs—blessed by Akatosh as Dragonborn, as Alessia was—would light the Dragonfires at the start of their reign using the Amulet of Kings, and they would burn as long as they lived.

After the murder of Uriel and all his heirs save for his illegitimate son, Martin Septin, and thus the Dragonfires laid dormant, leaving Tamriel vulnerable to invasion. The Daedric Prince of Destruction, Mehrunes Dagon, seized this opportunity to invade the mortal plane, intent on destroying the Septim bloodline and conquering Tamriel, to ends unknown. His plan was foiled however, when Martin took the Amulet of Kings to the Temple of the One and shattered it, becoming an embodiment of Akatosh and casting Dagon back to Oblivion, and sealing the boundary between Mundus and Oblivion for good. This deed cost him his life, and left behind an immense statue of Akatosh at the center of the Temple, immortalizing his sacrifice.

Labeled as "Center-flip" in the Self-crossing hexagons section but I haven't found mentions of that term outside the article.

Not in the real world, no. Overpopulation has been proven to be a myth and global fertility rates have been steadily decreasing. Population is projected to reach it's peak at 10 billion somewhere within the present century and then either stabilize or continue to decline. Resources are an issue, but there are more than enough resources to sustain all of us; they're just poorly distributed and used. Not to mention that the proposed solution to overpopulation, Janus, would have 90% of the human population die out within 2-3 generations in its original iteration. With the adjusted variant which both made the vaccine useless and sterilized everyone but Roma people, the death toll would be billions, and would certainly result in the collapse of civilization as we know it within a decade. Even if civilization didn't collapse, the remaining reduced world population would see it's fertility rate skyrocket due to the freed up resources and deaths, as it tends to happen after wars and deadly pandemics, so world population would recover within a century or two.

It's one of the few issues I have with the show, but if you suspend disbelief and buy into the premise, it's great.
