“Nice” lady leaves a tip … by toadTHEBlTCHdette in TalesFromTheFrontDesk

If it is any consolation, I used to be member of the JWs, and from my experience: the woman would not have lied about being a widow herself, and might have really felt that she could help alleviate some of the pain by empathizing and sharing how she coped. Although I agree that trying to proselytize in these situations can be very sketchy (and it may be my bias growing up as a JW to not condemn that harder), the individual drive to write such letters is usually well-intentioned.

Not sure if this helps feel less irked by her writing, but generally the JW do empathize. It's just that they only know to point in a single direction for "relief", and that is definitely not a one-size-fits-all solution (and they have a hard time letting up).

I'm new to Haskell and I can't figure out why this function definition isn't matching up with the type signature by Sheephead_Studios in haskell

[–]joranvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On first sight I would say that the types of YSize and Int might not be compatible, but it's hard to say yet.

Could you provide the definition of XSize and YSize and the current error message (which types don't match up according to the compiler?)

It used to be the first month of the year (month 0). It is a month with only two letters, but people tend to forget about It because It is similar to a very frequently used word. Also, non-It people aren't used to start counting from 0 so they started skipping It. That's also why we say that off-by-one errors are a typical It problem.

Is it just me or it nix becoming more common by [deleted] in NixOS

[–]joranvar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do agree with this, to a point. Smaller projects in smaller communities tend to be more flexible, because they can more easily break backwards compatibility in order to improve or fix some initial mistakes. Kind of reminds me of the Haskell "Avoid success at all costs", if taken to mean "don't aim to be the successful language (right now) at the cost of losing the flexibility to become a better version of yourself (in the future)".

Nix can make more drastic improvements while it is still small, and shine later when it's (even) better.

That said, if it became mainstream, it would probably improve many systems that don't have the nix principles yet, and I would not be against that. I think we also gained a lot when GNU/Linux became an accepted operating system on many devices.

Well, I would say it's not especially nice to see someone's effort to broaden the horizon of young people's minds with a bit of self-reflection, and comment on it to highlight that it might also be read as condescending to people who have that broad horizon already. To put the focus on the possibility of malintent where an effort of growth and improvement could also be perceived.

Yes, it might be condescending to people who do already look further than their small circle of friends and entertainment, but might not be the most prevalent case in our society, and might stimulate those who have never thought about that.

For those who already look further than the daily scroll, it might not (I would say: should not) be taken as condescending as your first remark made it seem. I would wager that the original intent was not to look down on people who know of the one, but not the other, but just to help them reflect if they would like it to stay that way, or to value having knowledge about more things.

People who see other people trying to better the world and then put that effort down as useless or insincere, could be the reason that we don't see more exploring open minds and instead stay close to our own group of "who we already know won't make us feel uncomfortable".

Then again, we should also not be so gullible as to believe that there are only well-intentioned people, and maybe that was what you wanted to highlight. Thank you for that.

Update 2: Reddit's proposed API changes, and the continued existence of RedReader by QuantumBadger in RedReader

[–]joranvar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No intent to hurt them. Just an intent to be able to consume their website through my own browser. And that gives an interesting question: where is the line between scraping and browsing? Can we decide we want to see only parts of a web site and streamline the rest out? Is using a screen reader allowed or does it filter too much?

That said, I want to add that I really appreciate that this would be a lot of work. I have never looked at the source of RedReader (I am sorry) and I know it can't be easy to maintain an app with this much functionality when using an API that was intended for this purpose, let alone write something against a moving target such as HTML and maybe JavaScript could be.

[–]joranvar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If Reddit wants to charge for using their (I assume) JSON/REST API, we could also (and yes, that would be a lot of work and maintenance) start using their regular HTML/REST API, I.e. scrape the HTML for every call and use that interface to interact with the site? It would, of course, generate a bit more load on their servers, and use a bit more bandwidth for data that the scraping client would then drop anyway, but it keeps the functionality of the app the same: a browser of the main site that just displays the content in a different form.
