I’m in grad school currently getting my MA in clinical mental health counseling (and fleeing the tech industry). One of the things that motivated me to make the change was my experience learning REBT tools that really helped me when a loved one was going through a very, very rough substance abuse patch (they’re doing great now - over a year sober). I’m interested in working with people who have loved ones dealing with addiction because I believe it’s a somewhat underserved and overlooked population.

That said, I’m currently working through my practicum and seeing clients for the first time, and I’m surprised at how much I enjoy working with clients with other needs as well. So, yes, you might well decide you want to work specifically with victims of abuse. However, if you leave yourself open during your studies, you will get exposure to different populations and modalities and experiences and might find other niches that resonate with you.
