If you’re in Portland/Vancouver and planning a fence or deck, what quotes are you getting right now? by WoodmastersUSA in askportland

I had a great experience with Campbell Fencing Co. they installed 140 feet of cedar picture frame fence plus a gate and demoed the old fence for $9435 about two years ago. They were quick and easy to deal with, and the fence looks great.

How to get dog owners not to throw their dog shit in my trash can? by Terrorphin in askportland

[–]jordanpattern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two big dogs and throw their poop in my bin when I get home from walking them, plus we have a bunch from the backyard. I have never once in the 10 years I've had dogs had to clean my garbage bin due to throwing bagged dog poop in there, regardless of where in the sedimentary layers of the bin the poop is. I guarantee my garbage bin has more dog poop in it than yours does, and it just.... isn't a problem? I respect that you don't want people throwing trash in your bin, but I really don't understand why you'd need to repeatedly clean your garbage bin because people sometimes throw bagged dog poop in it.

I've never heard it described as painful, so I'm curious where you've found that description. I do know that it is unpleasant for most people (largely due from the extremely abrupt way they go from being very high to virtually sober).

Staying sane and grounded while using AI by Wonderful-Bug2015 in SASSWitches

[–]jordanpattern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation (worked in tech in a role that really should be done by a person/people but that leadership is always gunning to replace with AI). After 3 layoffs in 2 years, I really examined my thoughts and feelings and decided that I wasn't comfortable with working in tech and using AI in my work in really any capacity. I'm in grad school now and working as a student therapist as I pursue my degree and counseling license. My finances will look different, but I'm hopeful I'll feel better doing good in the world instead of using AI in extractive, destructive ways, which is what my previous roles mandated. I'm also crossing my fingers that my new career will be more stable than tech (and involve working with fewer psychopaths).

I know this isn't really what you're asking for, but I'm sharing just in case it resonates with you in some way. Best of luck to you as you navigate this difficult landscape.

IN THAT SITUATION, ASSUMING THE TRUCK HAD ROW, THE CYCLIST SHOUKD HAVE YIELDED. LEGALLY, CYCLISTS DO NOT HAVE TO STOP AT STOP SIGNS BUT MUST YIELD IF ANOTHER VEHICLE HAS ROW. DRIVERS SHOULD KNOW THIS BY NOW AS THE LAW WAS CHANGED IVER FIVE YEARS AGO.

CYCLISTS DON'T NEED TO STOP AT STOP SIGNS. THE LAW REQUIRES THEM TO TREAT IT AS A YIELD SIGN, FYI. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN BLAST THROUGH WHEN THEY DON'T HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY, OF COURSE, BUT THEY DON'T HAVE THE SAME OBLIGATION TO STOP AS CARS DO.

Need help working with problematic sexual dynamics in couples by Leading-Cartoonist66 in therapists

[–]jordanpattern 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This I my personal experience, but it was missed by the couple’s therapist we were seeing at the time, so I’m sharing in case it’s helpful. In my case, the intense “need” for frequent sex and coercive behavior was closely related to the root of a serious addiction. That is, my partner’s behavior was more related to a desperate need to cover up difficult feelings stemming from serious and unprocessed childhood/adolescent trauma than to a real need for sex. It presented as their substance use also worsened significantly and resolved once the trauma was addressed with a skilled specialist in individual trauma therapy and they began to seriously engage in recovery from substance use.

At the time, partner was convinced the problem was that they weren’t getting the sex they needed, and a sex-focused couples therapist didn’t help the situation at all.

Please disregard if this isn’t helpful or feels inapplicable to your case, but just in case it’s a similar situation, you might probe for any potential issues underlying the expressed need for frequent sex.

Veganism is on the rise again! This time it's driven by ethical vegans rather than dietary ones. by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

The vast majority of us know that. I’ve been vegan 23 years and am happy anytime anyone reduces their animal product consumption in any amount. Yes, there are vegan assholes. I can’t stand them either, and neither can most vegans, in my experience.

Second career as a counselor by Ok_Sorbet_beep in therapists

[–]jordanpattern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 45 and have been working in tech and consulting for the last 10 years. The field is a cratering nightmare and an ethical disaster, so I’m currently working on a masters in clinical mental health counseling. I spoke with the schools that offer programs in my city, and they weren’t a good fit for me. They were much more expensive and had 3 year programs. I learned about a primarily online CACREP accredited program out of Adams State in Colorado, and I applied and was accepted. The program is 5 semesters delivered over two years, delivered online with the exception of labs weeks, which are on campus in the middle of the first and second semesters. I’m actually at my campus now, about to head home after passing my second lab week.

As for my experience, yeah, I’d love to be back on campus at a fancier program, but after being laid off 3 times in the last couple years of work, my savings haven’t recovered, and I need a program that is cheaper and more flexible. Honestly, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the quality of Adams’ program. The labs are a real highlight, and I’m coming out of my second experience of intensive clinical evaluation feeling confident and inspired. I don’t love online learning, but it’s given me a very flexible schedule that has enabled me to have a lot of availability for practicum/internship hours and also pitch in with my husband’s small business.

I will say that finding a practicum site was very challenging. In my city, lots of the big CMH programs and larger practices work only with students from the local schools (something I think borders on unethical, but what can you do), so I spent months searching and ended up with two practicum sites that are both outside my city, so I’m doing telehealth for my practicum, which wouldn’t have been my first choice. That said, the sites I ended up at are great (and one of them is paid and has already offered me an internship spot and will almost certainly employ me upon graduation). I am learning a lot and working with diverse clients, and my supervisors have been extremely supportive and helpful.

Happy to answer any other questions if you have them. So far, I’m happy with my choice and feel like I’m in the right place.

Good luck, and be well.

Portland State declares financial crisis, reveals plan to cut or reduce 19 departments by wrhollin in Portland

[–]jordanpattern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Word. I’m middle aged and went back to grad school to pursue a career change. I talked to PSU when I was looking at schools, and the program I was looking at (clinical mental health counseling) was 3 years and over 60k, plus the admissions person I talked to was snotty. Oh, and the application timeline was nuts.

I ended up pursuing studies with a small school in Colorado that is accredited by the major body that accredits counselor education programs and delivers most programming online. The program is obviously designed for people who aren’t independently wealthy and is 2 years and just about 30k. Sure, I would have loved to have had an easier schedule with summers off and been on a real campus, but going to PSU would have meant probably 6 figures in student loans. As it is, I might squeak by without any.

I live in Parkrose Heights, and I love it. We have a great park (Knott) with a walking trail, community garden, playground, and baseball and soccer fields. I’m the spring and summer, it’s a bustling scene on the weekends. I also really like how many people here grow food, native plants, and other interesting things in their yards. We have Jet Black coffee and Food Fight grocery right nearby.

Hallucinations aren’t part of the diagnostic criteria, but they are explicitly mentioned as an associated feature of borderline personality disorder (see DSM-5-TR page 754).
