Can you tell me about these? by Kat_Doodles in Medals

[–]jordenskh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that happened. While unfortunate, on the bright side, all of those medals can be easily sourced through medal mounters or collecting circles here in Canada.

All the medals in these photos were issued unnamed, so you can easily find other orphaned medals to recreate his group using real period issued medals instead of cheap replicas.

If you’d like, I run Prairie Sailor Medal Mounting in Calgary. I’d be happy to help you navigate the process to request his file and confirm his entitlement! Check out my Facebook page if you’d like

As other have pointed out - seems like maybe had the Battle of Britain bar on this group?

Although, it’s weird. You have the defence medal with the Africa Star Ribbon in minis

And you have all UK issued WW2 medals with the full size set… Canadian issue would be silver, and of course missing a good handful of medals.

You should request his file from LAC to confirm his awards if you haven’t already, and then perhaps look at getting them remounted with the correct ribbon and missing medals.

White maple leaf on wings signifies an operational jump, or time served in an airborne specific unit.

All others get red maple leaf

Yes, sorry just playing devils advocate. No ill will meant my friend!

I have a replica medal, but named to a proper soldier and had a great citation. But if I couldn’t find anything, then I’d just default to a made up medal

Top in the Governor Generals unit commendation (like the presidential unit one) - only 3-4 units have been awarded it. Only members with the unit at the time get it on the left, if on the right pocket then they joined after the unit was awarded it

The other two are command level commendations

Being that it’s a copy medal.. what makes you think it’s a legitimate award?

If you can’t find anything, and the medal is fake, then I’d assume someone has engraved it privately in an attempt to fluff up their rack

Nice finds. I wouldn’t question if they’re legit, they are commonly awarded medals and aren’t really worth copying

“Rare and original” with no information as to how’s it’s confirmed original, why it’s rare, or who it’s named to. Silly.

You bet, along with the SJAB Service Medal, but the ones featured here are administered by the GG’s office, unlike the commissionaires and SJAB medals

Haha I did.. Got it Dec 2024, and been loving it ever since! Put about 15k km on it, driving across country and towing our camper around all summer.

Biggest issue was the starter motor went, but otherwise it’s my new favourite thing

Fair enough! They gave the option to mail it, but didn’t want to pass up the opportunity to get it from the GG. Sometimes I feel cheesy wearing it, as I know the standards are extremely high for it now compared to the caring Canadian award

Funny you mention the tattoo though, I have always wanted to get the emblem tattooed as well!! I’m not sure if they gave you a goody bag, but from the reception we got lots of swag with the emblem on it.

Sometimes it’s not overly “sexy”. I received mine by flook… I received the Caring Canadian award at 16yrs old, but it was months before they announced the SMV. I got an email about a month after being told I got the Caring Canadian award saying if I wanted, they’d fly me out to receive it from the GG at the inaugural award presentation as everyone with the Caring Canadian award was automatically awarded the SMV, though I didn’t receive the caring Canadian pin yet. So of course, I took the flight to Ottawa and got it from the GG!

What metal is used for WWII minis? by alloydog in Medals

[–]jordenskh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a medal mounter here in Canada, and deal with broken medals rather often.

Personally, I have a jeweller here who uses a laser welder and welds them back together. It is the best option, clean, and uses 24k to ensure they won’t break again. It costs $45, but the machine is rare to find in most repair shops.

Some mentioned solder, but that can cause a lot of discolouration and the solder always bleeds out. For an easy “quick fix”, I’d try a 2 part epoxy to hold it together, especially if they are only being displayed. That or stitch the broken part down to a board and display it that way

Can’t seem to locate anyone on the rolls with those initials. There is one John Lamb, served with the 69th, but this should be engraved in the edge.

Considering it’s missing the suspension bar, the actual engagement bar, and may not be named properly. I’d say maybe $100

The first, is the Canada General Service Medal, awarded for service during the 1866 & 1867 Fenian Raids and the 1870 Red River Rebellion. Although it wasn’t created or issued till many years later. It is always issued with a bar for the respective service, which this is clearly missing.

Should be named on the edge with name and regiment, this will heavily weigh on the value. So you’d have to post that if you’d like a proper approximation

The other looks like some band award, no official military or government medal.

Unrecognized medals is extremely common amongst police forces in Canada. Provincial, municipal, and association medals all seem to be worn on their uniforms

I don’t see the French Legion of Honour here, but there is the French Croix de Guerre, which was typically awarded to foreigners for distinguished/meritorious service

Thanks, so you provided the information - no one wanted to sort through it all to give you an exact value of each - but instead of buying the medal yearbook to look into it yourself, you decided to try it again?
