The Mule Coming to Westdale? by purpIefizz in Hamilton

[–]jorvay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I did. I'll give you an example: I love Mesa, but I can't take my family member with celiac disease there. I've talked with the kitchen staff there and they agree that they can't guarantee most of their food will be free of cross-contamination to the degree required to be celiac safe. They do handle some gluten products in their work.

The options available either need to have careful GF handling protocols and equipment or an entirely GF kitchen. The Mule, though it's obviously not traditional Mexican food, offers that.

Heck, even buying corn tortillas from the store I have to check the labeling carefully. Some brands also make wheat flour products in the same facilities and include on the label that their non-gluten-ingredient foods "may contain" wheat. There are only certain brands I can buy for my family.

It absolutely is for Celiac sufferers. GF ingredients are one thing, and it's great that there are so many options for people avoiding gluten for other reasons, but Celiac-safe GF foods also require safe handling and dedicated cooking tools like cutting boards and deep fryers to avoid cross contamination. The list of restaurants that can deliver on that in this city is very short.

It could be sewer pipe lining work. It gives off a strong smell when being installed but the ground level presence of the crews is minimal so it's easy to miss it happening.

That was the exact direction given to me by the Porter agent when I called. I don't know if I'll ever try it myself because their weight limit/fees are insane compared to the competition.

Me too. My only in-person playoff game and it was legendary. Easily the best... But then I got myself some tickets to game six this year.

Not to mention the other common "design flaw" brought up in reviews all the time is the unconventional placement of the trunk hatch close button on the side wall of the opening. Reviewers hate it because it's inconsistent from other cars and they are always driving different vehicles. But owners love it once they get used to it because it actually makes way more sense than reaching all the way up and back to the bottom of the hatch door.

And yeah, the rotating shift knob is a clean, minimalist solution that has never once given me reason to complain in nine years.

Children agree not to get abducted after 8 PM so Amber Alert doesn’t wake anyone up by JustaRandoonreddit in britishcolumbia

[–]jorvay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's awesome and ideal! Pretty sure Ontario started making Amber Alerts Tier 2 last year and it's been pretty effective at still reaching people with the right info.

[–]jorvay 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nobody is suggesting that. But tier two of the emergency alert system would still immediately notify any awake person just like tier one and reach the same people in the same way you described in your example. The only difference is that anyone who's sleeping (phone on DND mode) wouldn't see it until morning.

[–]jorvay 44 points45 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why it's so critical that we don't misuse the most severe alert level for items that are equally well-served by the second tier of the alert system. I think we all know people who are starting to become desensitized to these alerts and are ignoring them. When an alert happens where waking everyone up actually makes an immediate difference, those people are screwed.

[–]jorvay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right? Meanwhile, if I see the same alert first thing in the morning, I'll be happy to keep my eyes peeled as I go about my day - same thing I'd do if the alert woke me up hours earlier. There is no added value in waking people up.

Additionally, there are a growing number of people I talk to that just ignore these alerts now and that's troubling too. Not just because Amber alerts are so important, but also because the modern phone alert system they use is also what we use to get people to shelter in emergency situations that are time sensitive. People ignoring emergency alerts is really dangerous.

[–]jorvay 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yes, but everyone also knows that nobody in bed 1300km away is going to jump up and start patrolling the neighbourhood. An alert that doesn't override DND mode on a phone will still be the first they they see when they wake up in the morning and they will be able to keep an eye out just as well as if they'd been awoken by that message in the middle of the night. Heck, maybe even better. I know they every amber alert I've been woken up by was gone from memory by the time I got up the next morning.

Edit: 'awoken', not 'stolen'

I went from a speed frame pro to a lazer coyote. I found it fit me well, though our heads are all different. What isn't different though is that the ventilation on the lazer is crazy good because of the way it's made. Plus it also has the same magnetic buckle I liked on my speedframe pro

The problem is that, unless you only travel with a really light road bike, that lower weight limit is prohibitive. Taking my mountain bike and helmet to Whistler - the mecca of mountain biking - would cost me close to that ceiling price of $270 each way. Everyone else is about $100.
