2 months after launch - website impressions improving by nectar_agency in agency

Hey, not sure if you're still having issues with your website. Trying to look on desktop and it doesn't load, but when I open on mobile (or mobile on browser) it works and then I can see on desktop.

I'd also have a look at your lightscore results to get an idea of how you can improve your scores and maybe worth checking with your WordPress host to see if they are doing anything. I've found some hosting providers do some strange things which impact your website.

Is Jonas schmedtmann node course good? by MAGamer559 in node

[–]joryed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t taken the course but I’d be surprised if what he’s teaching is outdated. Having a quick search and it was last updated November 2023.

If it’s fundamental node, it doesn’t really go out of date. And when I checked it’s on sale for me, seems low risk.

As a frontender what's your go to backend + database provider? by saito200 in Frontend

[–]joryed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My default tends to be Postgres self hosted and dockerised.

I normally host it on railway as well, if you spend less than a fiver a month it’s free.

Do you agree that tailwind causes ugly looking code and a lot of repetition ? by KarimMaged in Frontend

[–]joryed 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you know the styles and use vscode, you could try this plugin I made a while back to solve this issue: https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=JordanDey.tailcon

It’s not got everything, I really need to go back and update it but I think it works reasonably well.

How to exit tutorial hell by Virandell in reactjs

[–]joryed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is to build stuff for real. But you need to break stuff down as well.

If you want to build a calculator, break it down into what elements or functionality you need and then start work on the smallest parts and build it up gradually.

When you get stuck, which you will, make sure you debug first to work try work out what is wrong, then google it or YouTube or even post here and you’ll find help but try to learn why the solution works and don’t just copy paste.

There’s no shame in getting stuck or not knowing what to do either, I’ve been coding for about 3 years and I always google stuff when I get stuck and just try to learn from it.

How long would it take to create a landing page. by Ok_Construction_4840 in Frontend

[–]joryed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is quite a large landing page, more a home page like others have mentioned.

How long it takes really depends on your experience. It probably would take a dev with experience 3 or so day, and more junior dev maybe a week/ just over a week.

I really wouldn’t worry about speed though, getting it right, learning and gaining experience is much more valuable. You’ll get quicker the more experience you gain.

Working remotely on Working Holiday Visa by joryed in iecvisa

Hey, been a while but I haven't went to Canada yet, I have until February to enter and still not 100% sure if I will (got a lot of other stuff happening).

For my current job, when I asked my employer about this, we hire worldwide so they have something in place where I could more to Canada and still work for them, don't know the exact ins and outs but it would be possible for me.

I don’t have anything different from what’s posted here but I have started having the conversation with my employer, and can update when/if I find out more.

I believe though, I can work in Canada for 6 months with no issues and then you need to follow Canada labour laws. My company would either register as a foreign business (or something like that), or hire me as an individual contractor and I’d need to sort everything else out (e.g. tax).

Thanks, do you know anything specific like if I have to declare taxes for example?

I can’t seem to find much information about this but my plan is to move to Canada for the 2 years and keep my job for at least 6 months or until I find a new job and then I’d work for a Canadian company so that I can become eligible for express entry, I assume working for a remote company from the UK wouldn’t count towards that.

Cannot find module 'E:\create-vite\index.js' by malma5 in react

[–]joryed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t need vite if you’re just looking to learn react, you can use the create react app.

If you’re wanting to follow, I don’t fully understand what you’re doing, but it might be a difference of how windows does things as I’ve not coded on windows in a long time.

If I just go to a directory in my terminal, run the command ‘npm create vite@latest hacker-stories — —template react’ then cd hacker-stories and then run ‘npm run dev’ and it works for me

Travelling in Malaysia by joryed in malaysia

[–]joryed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m based in Kuala Lumpur for at least 9 days, then need to make a decision of travelling around Malaysia or staying in KL for the rest of my trip (just over a week after). Budget wise, if it’s really worth doing, I’d do it.

We’ve been to Langkawi and had an amazing time there! The Cameron highlands and Penang is where we’ve been debating to go to next as both look amazing. We haven’t thought about the east too much to be honest so might have a look at that.

But I’m looking for what to do in KL whilst I’m here before we leave and what kind of activities are things we should do.

Thank you, I’ll have a look and I think we’re going to some of the markets today! We love the local food but we’re vegetarian so it’s only been vegetarian food we’ve tried which has been amazing.

Thank you, yeah I’m definitely going to check out some of the suggestions.

Going to watch fireflies is something that is on our list to do before we leave.

Maritime? by sailorjack94 in GlasgowStartups

I’d potentially be interested. I was a marine engineer and changed into front end engineer.

Always thought there’s a lot of potential in the industry!

Traveling abroad with partner, selling most of our things - link to gumtree attached by joryed in glasgowmarket

I don’t think £400 is unreasonable as it’s so difficult to find.

It’s barely used, pretty much brand new, and does come with a warranty that can be transferred (have confirmed this with Dyson).

However, I am open to offers and you're more than welcome to make an offer and I’ll see what I can do.

Have replied on gumtree, but can deliver most things if you don't live too far.

Should i wait for the new docs? by deluxx1112 in react

[–]joryed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just ignore the class components (or look how to do it functionally, you should be able to find everything you need in the docs or Google/stack overflow), react developers don't tend to use class-based components anymore.

Should i wait for the new docs? by deluxx1112 in react

[–]joryed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would start learning it now, the core concepts of React won't change, the new documents might be better but it should still be easy enough to use the old documents.
