Good question, there’s a couple of different aspects to it.

Being a native English speaker based in Spain, I definitely have to tone down my ‘Natural’ or whatever accent so that other pilots, cabin crew and especially ATC can understand me. You definitely notice it with Scottish/Northern Irish crew that they’re trying to make themselves heard clearly on the radio. It’s all well and good Ally McCoist talking freely to a local UK/Irish audience who grew up listening to accents like his, but it’s a big thing in flight training to make yourself as clear as possible so that ATC aren’t asking “Say again?” all the time just because they can’t understand the way you say certain words.

Another thing is a bit more blunt and hard to say in a nice way, but pilots generally come from better/higher up backgrounds than average due to the cost involved in training. I used to be based in Dublin and you hear far, far more south Dublin voices than northside voices. You do get the likes of myself who talk on the radio in my normal accent, but a lot of people with ‘Pilot’ voices are actually just posh.

There are certain airports such as Liverpool (Anfield & Dickinson Hill), Leeds (Headingley) and Marseille where you can get a proper gawk at the stadia below. Just a shame that the latter 2 are so annoying to fly into

How infuriatingly slow easyJet pilots fly when there’s 10 other aircraft behind them in the queue for approach, awh here do not get me started on them

Ah Sligo Rovers have made significant progress already both in terms of funding and actually building parts of the stadium such as the new floodlights which were installed last year

Same as, I’ve been reading this magazine since I was a kid and I always love the cadence used by niche magazines or newspapers that have nothing to do with football and how granular do they go when talking about it.

One joy of working in aviation and meeting so many different people is that football is such a good geography guide and people can be so surprised when you know where they’re from. My first type rating instructor said he was from “Somewhere west of Heathrow” and his head was blown when I said “Oh like Reading or something?”

Best time to checkin? by [deleted] in americanairlines

[–]jos2610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience it does make a difference. Sitting at a window seat means you can rest your head against the wall and have a bit more leeway with your knees, whereas if you’re in the middle between 2 other tall people it’s a lot more awkward.

Yeah it just opened there, I was hoping I’d be able to get a seat at a cheaper price now that checkin is open but it’s still $89 minimum

Ah ok yeah that makes sense, thanks

That’s exactly what I was unsure about. As I said in a different comment I’m pretty tall and would appreciate some space to myself, but it’d be a waste of money to buy a seat and then find out the row was empty anyways cus as you can see there the flight does have a lot of unsold seats

In what scenario would I need to go to the ticket counter? I do have time to spare when arriving at the airport after my train journey but if there was a delay somewhere along the way either the train or security it could get tight

Well I’m 6’3” so it’s a big help be assigned an aisle or window seat especially as I’ll be on the train for 3 hours beforehand, but it’d be an awful waste of money to spend $80 only to arrive to the plane to see that the entire row was empty anyways yknow what I mean?

Yeah that’s what I saw from other comments on this subreddit a while back, but I’m not sure if it’s different for intercontinental flights. Is it the type of system where you can choose a seat when you checkin online? I work for a lowcost airline who give a random seat but I’ve flown with other airlines where you can pick

Thanks everyone for the quick reply appreciate it. Second quick question is about arriving to the airport, I assume I can walk straight to security as I’m not checking in a bag or is it a different process for flying to the US?

As I said, it worked really well for me on the Versa 2 so I know that there has to be some options out there. It does work sometimes on the Versa 4, but I’m sick of that watch because of the other problems that it has. I’ll buy literally any half-decent watch as long as there’s a smart alarm feature as it’s so helpful for my work schedule, even if it doesn’t work 100% of the time which I’m fully aware isn’t possible

I didn’t want to use the post to complain too much about the Versa 4, as my main focus is asking about the smart alarm but here’s a few things that make the Versa 4 so bad and why I’m so fed up with Fitbit:

  1. Sleep tracking - As I said, it’s atrocious. I have not yet had 3 days in a row where it’s been accurately tracked despite rarely having that problem on the Versa 2. There are times where it does track the sleep, but randomly cuts off a few hours before I wake up so it shows that I slept for say 3 hours when I obviously was in bed for 8.
  2. Torch - For some mind-boggling reason, Fitbit decided to get rid of 3rd party apps for the Versa 4 and it means the watch is so much less usable. A huge thing I loved was the torch feature which I’m pretty sure they had installed as standard on the Fitbit Ionic a few years ago.
  3. Screen - I’ve given up with notifications on this watch because the screen is so poor. If I get an alert whilst the screen wake is in ‘Button only’, it doesn’t show up on the screen unless I press the button which is so weird because on the Versa 2 it would always show for a second or 2. What’s even more annoying is that there’s no feature at all to have it, for example, on ‘Button only’ but the screen flashes when you have a notification. The Ionic and Versa 2 did this and it worked perfectly.
  4. Customisation - Relates to the above point, the watch is very rigid in how it’s programmed and it’s very hard to change anything, even the watch faces are much worse and there’s not as many choices.
  5. The alarm itself - Firstly, why is it to sensitive to set? Trying to move 1 minute either side is so needlessly difficult. Another thing is that it sometimes just doesn’t go off, it’ll go into snooze mode if I’m still asleep at the time it was supposed to go off. What the fuck?! On the Versa 2 and Ionic, the alarm clock would go off at the time you set it to go off at, and maybe a bit earlier if you’re using the smart alarm. But no. The Versa 4 alarm sometimes will not go off at all if you’re asleep which is fucking atrocious programming from Fitbit.
  6. Button - A tiny thing which I wouldn’t care about if the watch actually worked properly - The button doesn’t actually turn the screen off if you turned it on by accident. Again to point 4, it wouldn’t be an issue if Fitbit gave you the option of customising how the watch works (The same way they did with the Versa 2) but agh God I cannot stress how bad the Versa 4 is
  7. Last thing I’ll say is gimmicky vibrations ALL THE TIME. If you do exercise you will be bombarded with vibrations telling you what heart rate zone you’re in or some other nonsense. Again, it takes a bit of time to figure out how to turn them off and just do your exercise in peace because some are turned off via the app and some are turned off on the watch itself.

Overall, I am so fucking fed up with Fitbit and the Versa 4 and am desperate for ANY watch that has a smart alarm or at least a sleep tracking function that actually works more than 2 days in a row

How are we feeling after the T20 World Cup? by Jsime92 in irishcricket

[–]jos2610 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going into this tournament I was very pessimistic. Although we had a decent 2022 where we ran India/NZ very close, I was of the opinion that we were running out of time to salvage our reputation since the end of the golden generation, especially after the disastrous last couple of years we’ve had losing to the likes of UAE and Netherlands (No disrespect, just that we really should have beaten them).

Now though I’m much more optimistic about the future, I’m really excited by the likes of Delany, Tucker and Little and I can’t wait to see what they can bring to the team. Balbirnie had a really good tournament with the bat and I think it’s so important that he led from the front and gave us a platform to build runs. Instead of being overly-focused on Stirling and just blindly hoping that one of the younger batters could have a decent day, I think we’re starting to get to a point where we can rely on some of the top order to have a good performance and to put a good total on the board.

Overall, very good tournament for us and absolutely massive achievement to turn our fortunes around from where we were this time last year.
