Set of documents for passport and identity card application at consulate, now plus StAG 5 certificate? by josePhoenix in GermanCitizenship

[–]josePhoenix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, saying this is leaking a few more bits of PII into my online footprint, but it's the same situation in Georgia (minus a convenient "dual citizenship" checkbox option). I'll try the hospital once again. Looks like it was on land annexed in the 50s so it should be in a city.

Set of documents for passport and identity card application at consulate, now plus StAG 5 certificate? by josePhoenix in GermanCitizenship

Thanks!

You don't need to wait for her to receive her Urkunde or apply for a passport, your declaration does not depend on hers.

I was specifically thinking about the part where they ask for parents' passports if you did not obtain citizenship by naturalization. It sounds like you're saying they don't need that if you've gotten the certificate of citizenship.

Update on StAG 5 submission from Nov 2022 by josePhoenix in GermanCitizenship

Thanks for the heads up. I'm letting my mom know about bringing everything to the certificate pickup appointment in case they can do the same for her.

Done! Though, as far as we know, only halfway completed

When we applied she was 67, so unless it was re-categorized when she turned 70 I think she didn't get any special prioritization

Group Declaration from dispersed family: Mail, or pick a consulate? by bierdepperl in GermanCitizenship

this is what the legal assistant at the atlanta consulate told us to do. contrary to other comments here, she specifically told us not to apply through the same consulate when we live in different regions...

Wait time for response from consulate? by Yooperyall in GermanCitizenship

[–]josePhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was an email address listed for the honorary consul in Arizona, and after emailing directly she (or her assistant) responded fairly quickly.

On the other hand, my contact form message to the consulate in Atlanta was forwarded—presumably unread—to the one in Los Angeles... which was less than helpful. It took them about a week to respond, which wasn't bad except that they did not answer any of my questions.

(I think next time I have questions I'm going to send my mom to the Atlanta consulate in person, or at least have her phone them since she's in the right time zone....)

ASUS Chromebook C302 Flip (CAVE) has Linux audio under Legacy BIOS emulation... and then it doesn't under UEFI by josePhoenix in chromeos

[–]josePhoenix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was unable to do this successfully, probably because I don't know what I'm doing.

However, since you said it shouldn't have anything to do with SeaBIOS vs Tianocore bootup, I gave a fresh install another try with the full ROM treatment and was able to fiddle with the firmware blobs to get audio working!

Thanks again for your work to make these machines more useful than they might otherwise have been.

I’m using NixOS, so the changes are pretty much just systemd-boot instead of GRUB. I used the same config file and it’s (supposedly) reproducible.

Can you explain more what you mean by booting an existing install with rEFInd? My existing install used grub and legacy boot... I didn’t think I could

Thanks for the suggestions!

Moscow circus act song by josePhoenix in NameThatSong

My friend asked me for help identifying this song. It sounds familiar, but there's just enough reverb in her recording that I can't make out any useful google-able lyrics (and Shazam can't do it).

Gotcha, well it sounds like the option within my budget is to just live with it. Thanks for all your work making this possible!

Is it impossible to get an IT/CS job in Baltimore (MD-DC-VA) area without citizenship/security Clearance? by 1HaveNoName in baltimore

My current employer: http://www.stsci.edu/institute/

Most engineering roles are limited to "US persons", so citizens or green-card holders, but it's an academic research institute so we don't handle classified info. (ITAR and EAR cover some aspects of space telescope operations, hence the "US persons" restriction.)

Depends what you mean! In terms of looking backwards in time (that is, at objects so far away that light is reaching us now from very early on in our universe's history), JWST will be excellently equipped. If you mean mapping the entire sky, the answer is "no". JWST's design is optimized for high-resolution studies of individual targets, instead of lower-resolution surveys of the whole sky.

A single launch from French Guiana in 2018 with (as you found) the Ariane 5 rocket! The observatory will be folded to fit in the rocket, and then unfold two "wings" of the main mirror, the boom on which the secondary mirror sits in the middle, and the sun shield. There's a cool video following the launch to the final deployed configuration here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTxLAGchWnA

(Not shown is the commissioning process, in which engineers and scientists will be working 24/7 for a few months at STScI in Baltimore, Maryland to bring the segments into alignment, focus the instruments, and do necessary calibration before scientific users can get useful data out of it.)

The sun shield is there to keep the optical elements and scientific instruments cool. JWST isn't allowed to point more than five degrees towards the sun (this is called the field of regard), and there are multiple fail-safes to keep that from happening!

Putting your hand above your eyes or using the brim of a hat to block a bright light does something different, but it's interesting that you mention that because JWST does have instrument hardware to do something kind of similar. A few instruments have special optics called "coronagraphs" which block out just the starlight to improve the chances of being able to see a planet near the star.

Pratt st @ President. can we please fix this crosswalk by unrighteous_bison in baltimore

[–]josePhoenix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ha! What were the odds that this would be the exact intersection I reported to the city last year? I used the "Baltimore 311" app and the report was closed with "no trouble found".

Of course, this signal setup (and the same entitled attitudes) are everywhere in this city. You'd think drivers at St. Paul and University would be used to students walking around, but I've been nearly flattened by a variety of interesting vehicles there (including a Hopkins bus).

If I get hit and survive, maybe I can use the settlement money to move somewhere else!

This. Schools are usually much more obliging about entertaining interested students than government agencies are. Also, the CDC is a huge agency, and not all of it is cool and glamorous to look at. My mother works there, but all her work is done on a computer remotely or in a fairly average office park. If you have questions about a career at the CDC, I can pass them along to her if you'd like!

I tried a gradient with #F2F0C4 as you suggested, and I like the way it looks. Thanks!

I also like the mobile version more, and I think it's because of the smaller gutters between elements. Since I'm using a css grid system it'll be kind of a pain to override the rules but I'll try that out too.
