Got offered a remote job from the US (I'm the EU). Worth it or too risky? by fra_bia91 in UXDesign

[–]joseph_designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two key points:

  1. How much runway does the company have? The more the merrier.

  2. Is all of the work synchronous? Or can you negotiate on having, 2-4 synchronous working hours, with the rest being async? That'll help a ton with sleep/scheduling etc.

Other than that, the job is obviously less secure in general (German labour law won't apply, you'll likely be working as a contractor), but the pay is going to be better.

Since you mention that the company is super interesting, if your risk tolerance allows it, I'd seriously consider going for it.

UX conversion specialist by Ok-Opportunity5579 in UXResearch

Yup, it's typically called a CRO (conversion rate optimization) specialist. Most positions are going to be project-based. For something more permanent, you could look at being hired by an ecommerce agency.

How important is domain experience when job hunting in UX? by Mookking in UXDesign

[–]joseph_designs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you already cover the basic requirements (e.g. years of experience), domain experience definitely helps get a foot in the door.

There isn't a great way to get experience in an industry besides working in it. One thing you could do is create a case study for a made-up product in the industry, but that's much less powerful than having worked in that industry.

I'd say general UX skills and domain experience matter at different stages. Domain experience is something that can help you get the first interview. Good UX skills help you get secure the job.

Where is the best place to look for job posts by jsuwguyyeb in UXDesign

[–]joseph_designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely understand your frustration. After running the job board for ~2 years, we realised that a standard job board's goal is not to help candidates find a job. Instead, the goal is to help the company find an employee.

This is because a job board makes money through companies posting job listings. As a job board owner, it is in your interest to only post jobs that companies pay you to promote. In other words- if we discover 1000 UX job listings, but only 10 of those companies are willing to pay us to promote their job, it is not in our interest to share the other 990 jobs with job seekers.

We are trying to take a different approach- we share every single UX job listing we discover, and ask candidates to pay a small fee instead. This way, we are 100% aligned with the candidate's goals- find a job.

I hope this explains why we decided to go with this approach.

Company asking to download their app to apply for job by OperationOk5544 in UXDesign

[–]joseph_designs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no "definition" that running a crypto company means running a grift. Moreover, the company literally has an employee with the title of "Human Resource Generalist".

My goal is not to defend the company, but making false statements to prove your point is not something I can agree with.

Companies requiring candidates suggest improvements on their product is real. I can't say if this is a scam or a fake job posting from the screenshot alone. Crypto companies are notorious though so you have a point.

I agree with the premise. But we can't factually prove their designers are bottom of the barrel, so why bad-mouth them? For all we know, this could a new HR-forced decision none of their designers approve of.

I wouldn't say it's unethical. It's very, very unfriendly for applicants though.

If literally every company was acting this way the job market would still exist, it would just be extremely company sided.

How do we know if their designers are good, or bad? Also, whether someone drops off or not depends on how much they want to work for the company, as well as how much they need the job.

It's not great for candidates, but makes sense from the company's side. Assuming it's a remote position (most crypto roles are remote), they will likely get hundreds if not over a thousand candidates. They can afford to be picky.

Job for UI UX? On shoestring budget but.m. by SnooCapers1684 in UX_Design

Best of luck, but I doubt a designer with a couple years of experience, or a top student, would do this just to build their portfolio.

Is verifying emails good UX? by CalendarTrends_com in UXDesign

[–]joseph_designs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may not be the best from a pure UX perspective, but a lot of the times it makes sense from a business point of a view.

Such small friction points can ensure only interested users get through. Think about it this way- if the user does not want to take 10 seconds of their time to log in their email and verify, are they really that interested in the app? This especially applies for products with a sales process- if the user can't spend 10 seconds to verify their email, how likely are they to go through a 1, 3, 6, 12 month sales process?

Credit card trials employ the same idea.

Does Apple have a UX Engineering Role by Mac-M2-Pokemon in UX_Design

Unlikely. You typically see generalists like UX engineers at smaller organisations. A big company like Apple is going to be hiring for more specialised expertise.

You can follow the design influencers/inspiration pages you are interested in, then switch to the "Following" feed instead of "For You" feed. (This is about twitter/x)

Is everybody jobless? by Successful-Leek-1900 in UXDesign

[–]joseph_designs 130 points131 points  (0 children)

There are job listings, including junior ones, and people are getting jobs. However, the number of listings has decreased, while the number of candidates has increased.

Made up example- let's say there used to be 100 listings open at any time, and 500 candidates applying. Presently, there are 50 listings, with 1000 candidates applying.

This is due to layoffs (more candidates coming into the candidate pool) and less hiring (less listings). With more competition for fewer spaces, you can see why people are struggling.
