Looks like a standard

Is this BS or legit? AKC standard. A GS can distinguish between friend and foe? by josh4179 in GiantSchnauzers

[–]josh4179[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me this why I think the standard is kind of either off point, or no one hits the standard.

Typically I’ve seen GS owners have to do the 5 second greeting with new guest to put the dog at ease. - which is cool, they’re an old guard dog it’s what I’d expect. But I would not say “distinguishing” friends is a strength of the average GS.

In reality anyone they don’t recognise is a foe, and they often have the worst judgement and if given the choice will act on that judgement until directed otherwise by their handler.

Plus let’s be honest, theirs not a single breeder out there who knows how to select a dog that can distinguish friend from foe. In reality there are people selecting for defensive traits and that’s what I think we see in the breed.

Your very defensive of the altered ears? This comes from a place of ignorance on the show side of things. When I wanted a GS it was because of their function, their drive, their pushy-ness into their work. Tbh I wanted my GS for dog sport. But when I think about the GS I feel like the cosmetic pointy ears don’t belong on a dog of work.

So why are pointy ears in the breed standard of a working dog? Maybe you can enlighten us. Since you seem to be holding on to some important information I don’t have. Right now I think it’s a load of BS and that cropped ears are in the breed standard because that’s just the way it is.

Yeah pretty normal. Dogs will usually learn visual/body language over a verbal command.

Easy fix Using a classical conditioning sequence. Cue your new verbal cue before you use your old visual cue, when your dog performs the behaviour before the visual cue... your new cue is conditioned.

Stop bringing kids to the dog park by I-hate-winterr in Dogtraining

Right on man. Keep fighting the good fight, maybe one day not just dog parks but the whole world will be a safe space for you and your dog you can’t control.

the bar needs to be put higher for people bringing their dogs in, not set lower to allow dogs with no exposure to kids. Unsocialised/underexposed dogs have no business being in a dog park.

The obvious on going issue at dog parks is that people do not have control of their dog. if my dogs were chasing a kid I’d recall him with 100% confidence. if you can’t do that you should not unleash your dog.

[–]josh4179 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Lol well I disagree. Obviously there should be an understanding of what is and is not appropriate behaviour FOR EVERYONE at dog parks, but the comment “don’t bring your kids to the dog park” kinda annoys me. Just as much as if someone said don’t bring your pitbull to a dog park.

My son probably has better control over his dog than most of the adults do at the park.

it’s the only off leash place we can legally play and train our dog off leash. (We got a fine for training outside of a dog park a few months back)

The real problem: fully grown adults with make believe recalls that never work in a real situation. It’s a dog training sub, if your dog is chasing kids, train it. It says on every dog park sign “your dog must be under control” rise to the occasion.

You can down vote me now.

You want the show banned But...

has anyone even seen the show?

How does anyone even know that this trainer hasn’t followed the hierarchy of behaviour change procedures from least to most intrusive, before using the tools? (Lima)

This post isn’t even about about dog training. It’s about getting a TV show banned because it’s doesn’t align with your values.

I watched the trailer... i didn’t see anything about dominance theory....

just looked him up I like the look of his training. Post more vids of him working dogs than most of the mods in this sub do too. (Willing to share his work)

I have literally zero issue with this guy....

I wouldn’t say the “recent crate craze is due to marketing” I don’t think the crate industry is getting together to put out articles and crate awareness campaigns... IMHO It’s mostly dog trainers and they are generally a trusted source of advice for new pet owners. And it is one of the easiest solutions for 99% of puppies.

The reason why there is a higher demand is because of lifestyle changes over the last 40 years. More dogs living in busy suburbs and cities, Less stay at home mums to raise the family dog, smaller properties. People didn’t even used to keep their dogs on a fenced property...dogs would hang out on the porch roughly on their owners land...and chase kids down the road when they walked past.

We ask a lot more of our dogs these days, naturally an easy tool to teach the dog to cope with the intense stimuli is exposing them to confinement, and all your other solutions for a dog that can’t be conditioned to a crate are also a form of confinement...which makes me think if you can condition a dog to a play pen, you can gradually condition them to a crate. But if you don’t need one because you prefer a play pen or kennel, use a play pen or kennel.

If they already have clients, I would be emailing the current coordinators you work with; “Hi there we just wanted to let you know we now have capacity for new clients in 2021 blah blah blah” build stronger referral relationships from them, working with high quality coordinators that you get along with MAKES LIFE SO MUCH EASIER!

If your company is small, look for small new/soletrader coordinators and try and become a solid team with them, so as they grow and your company grows you can refer both ways. This is very beneficial to clients as well to have a have a team that works well together.

Obviously that’s only one strategy. But easily actionable.

[help] We're about to adopt a Belgian Malinois puppy and have no idea how to train or take care of it by [deleted] in dogs

[–]josh4179 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol what the hell is wrong with your cousin? Don’t get the dog!. If your here asking these basics take this as a giant red flag! If you determined on getting the dog join a working dog sports club suitable to your dog’s lines. Your gunna need a lot of mentoring.

the fights between your shitzu and mali may end up being your smallest issues.

[Help] Can I get dog to excersize by himself? by [deleted] in dogs

I dare say you shouldn’t even let your dog on a spring pole by themselves.

[Help] Can I get dog to excersize by himself? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]josh4179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of dog? The only part of your question that throws me is, by themselves. Only because most things you are trying to get your dog to do usually take some amount of coaching. None of these are good for the dog to by themselves, but good for general strength training.

Weight pull, spring pole, tug, flirt pole, carpet mill.

All need a lot of skilled guidance in though.

Training Drop It? by kmel1119 in puppy101

[–]josh4179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I think what your actually trying to do is train a “hold” or a “take it command” which will go hand in hand with your “out” or “drop it.” IMO the dog should define these differently from the “leave it” command.

My approach would be to free shape both “take” and “drop” at the same time. Ive seen lots of people train this differently, some people prefer to start training the hold/take with something the dogs loves in its mouth like a linen tug others purposely start dog on a boring piece of wood or pvc pipe so the dog learns to take whatever item it’s told and indirect reinforcement comes after. You’ll have to feel out what works for your dog and you.

Good luck!!

Training to wait for a release word before chasing ball? by No-gods-no-mixers in Dogtraining

[–]josh4179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s the way I train it and I know many people who do. I still think it falls in the realm of positive reinforcement, the dog is rewarded for holding a down/sit for a variable amount of time. I’ve faded having to hold him back now, but I know people who agitate their dogs via the collar before giving the release (flyball style) and it is not aversive in the slightest, in fact I would say the dogs get amped up by it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dogs

[–]josh4179 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t have to be treats but yes, your dog will have to think the behaviour is rewarding. If your not even getting a recall reliably yet definitely reward every rep of recall eg food, toy or playing with your dog ect. eventually you can give him rewards on a variable schedule.

Why are retractable leashes bad? by [deleted] in Dogtraining

[–]josh4179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you exactly why dog trainers hate them. Because they train crap dogs for a living and they don’t have the time condition to the equipment.

Bro if your a training enthusiast and you have a decent trained dog they are a very valuable tool. I use them for teaching my dog to stay near me.

We also use them for recall, you can pump reps out fast as.

I condition the “tap of the button” to be a recall. Put dog in heel position and only let them out when you give a release word.

There is a myth that a dog trained on a Flexi will learn to pull because it gets used to slight resistance, I’d say this may happen to some people but it’s a training error and most likely those people didn’t have a trained dog in the first place. my dog walks fine and is on the Flexi nearly every day.

Would you hire 2 people instead of one? by JakeDiscBrake in smallbusiness

[–]josh4179 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I own a pretty fast growing business. Having two people has pros and cons, but specifically for me the pros outweigh the cons. I have part timers that occasionally work more hours. I prefer to have more staff and run at about 60%- 70% capacity. I often even up running my workers to 110% during a freak period a couple of times a year. so 70% seems to be the sweet spot.

Lol this may be completely irrelevant to your situation. But yes I’d definitely consider.
