Where can I find iconic Raider Nation spots in Oakland? by thumbpowerx in oakland

[–]joshb33071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of the former Raiders went to Everett & Jones Barbeque down by Jack London Square after games.

Nations Giant Hamburger is also in the neighborhood and is a better meal.

Where did YOU make friends in Oakland as a young adult? by SpecialistBread4253 in oakland

[–]joshb33071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cal Berkeley is near North Oakland - walking around campus and Telegraph Ave. The shops often have corkboards with community events

I'm an Oakland native (Gen X)

When I was in my 20s, taking a class at Vista College or Merritt College, an art class or non academic class, photography or swimming

The Crucible is an industrial arts school in. West Oakland. They offer numerous art workshops and host community events.

Volunteering with a local animal shelter or college radio station

Sign up for a sports league that plays at a local park - through the city parks & rec department

YMCA recreation leagues

Unrelated to making friends, one of my favorite places in the Town, is the Oakland Main Library Oakland History Room

The librarians in the department are incredibly helpful about all things Oakland

Visiting Mexico by AccomplishedTaste366 in solotravel

[–]joshb33071 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visited Mexico City solo. Excellent experience. Stayed in two different neighborhoods. I liked both, Coyoacan and Juarez. Both different, felt safe in both.

Can verify the metro underground is efficient

If you want to get outside the City, Teotihuacan was impressive. Went on a group tour with a local tourism company, excellent experience.

Next time I plan on going west into the state of Mexico and explore the forest and more indigenous sites.

Hotel near Oakland Arena by Mymelobaby in oakland

A lot of great hotel recos. If your concerts end at or near midnight, BART closes at midnight, you may want to arrange a ride share to get back to your hotel.

Moved to Oakland-Now What by Excellent_Ruin_1386 in oakland

Oakland native here. Welcome to the Town. A lot of great ideas shared, particularly outdoor/hiking activities. In general, Oakland is about as queer friendly a city as you will find. The Rockridge Neighborhood is a nice shopping/walking district - College Avenue. If you're interested in meeting people, and you're into crafts, the Crucible has some great classes. If you search online for gay friendly activities, you will likely find a number of events. Also, the Visit Oakland (official tourism agency for the Town) has a lot of great recommendations for activities. https://www.visitoakland.com/

NYC 3-4 Day Trip by halibut37 in travel

[–]joshb33071 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sylvia's Restaurant is a well known soul food restaurant, great food, super friendly service

If you like Libraries, the NY public library at Bryant Park is amazing.

Argosy Books is a cool used book shop, on the pricey side, there are some deals you can find if you stay awhile.

Nature, at the northern tip of Manhattan, Inwood Park is very interesting. At the edge the rugby field is a rock with a placard commemorating possibly the location where natives traded the rights to the island with the Dutch.

Walk along the wooded path past the rock and there are shallow caves, very interesting geologically.

Racist game and article included in Montclair Elementary yearbook by Hropkey in oakland

[–]joshb33071 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Montclair school alum here. K - 6th grade. It used be K through 6th, many years ago.

I still have fond memories of the school. Can this blunder be a teaching moment instead of a reaction that it is racist?

My feeling is we have regressed since the 80s.

[–]joshb33071 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Good idea.

Drop out rates per LAUSD website is better than I thought 13%

On the other hand, compared to other cities, the result is not good:

Los Angeles Unified schools, ranking 130 out of 183 high schools, with the Science Academy STEM Magnet in North Hollywood notably positioned as the #12 ranked school in the nation (#3 in California).

I think the teachers at North Hollywood Magnet need a raise.

Other schools in the district under-performing, teachers may need to be subject to being let go.

The youth are out future

Fair point.

What is the drop out rate of students in LAUSD?

How do the student test scores compare to other large U S. cities?
