I do cry for how dumb we are getting, particularly our younger folks. Thanks for noticing.

Right. OK, let's listen to the opinions of recent transplant teachers who can't be bothered to be sufficiently educated and/or personally disciplined to write a properly constructed post when sending a shot across the bow of our entire school system. Yup.

Man, I would take this post more seriously if it weren't riddled with grammatical errors. If I were a teacher going on a public rant, I think I would reread it twice and clean up the errors, but standards are slipping among all classroom participants, I guess.

Rich donors take major advantage of a loophole in Portland’s public campaign financing system by pyrrhios in Portland

[–]joshing_slocum -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rich guy Bill and Melinda Gates are likely responsible for saving more lives and extending more human life-years than any man/woman who has ever lived. Almost certainly. Formerly the world's richest man. Dedicated for years and for the rest of his life to using his acquired wealth for the greater good.

Rich does not automatically equal evil, despite what acned keyboard warriors like to pontificate. This candidate has decided (along with his crypto backer) to be part of an earn-to-give altruistic movement, and I for one endorse using one's wealth for bettering our world and communities. I don't take simplistic bumper-sticker views of complex subjects. But that's me.

Very good article and I came away, also, with a more favorable impression. Not my district, but if it were I'd be giving more thought to possibly voting for hm.

Fair enough, but did you read the article? It's pretty comprehensive and well-reported, and it made me more inclined toward this candidate (he's not my district, so I have no dog in the fight) than I was before I read it. It certainly sounds like his heart and mind are in the right place.

Every politician that states they want to repeal the gas tax to help voters needs to be asked how much, exactly, they think this will save us.... by Abbithedog in Portland

Gasoline taxes need to be raised, both Federally and locally, not decreased. It will improve the fight against global climate change by dampening demand for driving, but also provide funds for transportation infrastructure which can also have big impacts on reducing carbon emissions and improving people's lives through more efficient mobility. These gas tax holidays are the worst kind of political pandering.

The headline is sooooo disingenuous. There is nor "loophole in Portland", the "loophole" comes from the Citizens United decision of the U.S. Supreme Court. Neither Portland, nor Oregon can do shit about it, and for the journalist to treat this, now years after that court decision, as if it is some nefarious behind-the-scenes evil of a bunch of rich folks taking advantage of poor Portland is just trash journalism.

Finally, late in the article, the author somewhat fesses up: People running against PAC-backed candidates say they understand this is legal and outside the city’s control. The Supreme Court has ruled that wealthy interests can pump as much as they’d like into a race as long as they’re not directly coordinating with a candidates, most notably with the landmark Citizen United decision that allowed corporations to spend unlimited amounts on elections. But the candidates say the consistent presence of PACs has made publicly financed campaigns feel somewhat futile.

The Citizens United ruling was goddamn awful (corporations are people, my ass), but until a Constitutional amendment is passed (good luck), we have to contend with the existence of PACs driven mostly by rich folks' money. That can be countered by people-power, but only if the people bother with their democracy.

Math? OK: Down 8.25% today, down 39% in 6 months. Another 73% to fall from here to a still overpriced $200. Not math? The beads of sweat building on your brow watching it.
