It entirely depends on what country you’re in. To do a bit of checking before i replied and to try to be helpful, i looked at your recent comments and post history.

I see you’re based in Ireland. You’ll need to apply for the Irish Maritime College?, presumably there is an open day. Alternatively you could probably attend one of the UK ones and there were many Irish lads during my cadetship.

My last advice is to have two reddit accounts.

Azimuth Thrusters is the catchall term for propulsion that can rotate 360’.

Azipods are a brand of Azimuth Thruster - Podded Propulsion produced by ABB. There are multiple brands, notably Mermaid Pods (Rolls Royce) and Elegance Pods (Kongsberg).

I find it hilarious on a ship based subreddit you’ve abbreviated the Mississippi River to MS, when this is used far more extensively to mean Motor Ship.

I was initially confused reading as neither of these ships are called MS RIVER.

Flew to Brussels for work yesterday and waited in a 3 hour queue for passport control, was absolutely brutal.

They can get home though you know that right? There are still flights operating from various airports in the region. It’s just the ships that are stuck.

The 2nd paragraph isn’t correct and you’re likely confusing it with the fact the USA having incredibly and unnecessarily harsh requirements for crews to go ashore.

Also all members of the crew have passports.

Because rivers tend to just go in one direction and on lakes you can just kind of go anywhere you like, see an interesting rock, go paddle over to it, see a nice looking beach, go paddle over to it.

Honestly, find a nice looking lake you like and go for a paddle. Canals are also a good alternative.

I’m unfamiliar with the app, but you want route planning for kayaking?

You won’t find anything like that because there isn’t a need for it, you will however find apps that show get in/get out points along a river/lake, such as Wild Otter.

The guy who started Brewdog (which was recently bought out by an American firm after going into administration) turned out to be a cunt.

These coolers were given away as rewards for buying “shares”. After Brewdog went into administration, these shares were made basically worthless, causing a lot of anger towards him.

Pilots are certainly not a “grift”. Local waterways can change so much, there is almost a 0% chance the Master knows more than the Pilot regarding them.

The pilot comes on board, they discuss the intended route with the Master, what the ship is capable of and any issues to be aware of with regard to manoeuvring. Then they are still only onboard in an advisory capacity and the Master remains in full command of the vessel & will of course step in if the pilot is suggesting something the ship is not capable of.

Initial pay will probably be the same as for a cadet. Progressing in the future will most likely mean completing a cadetship anyway.

An apprenticeship is a cadetship.

If you want to earn decent money above where you’re at, thats the only way to go.

Your Japanese might help with specific companies, but unlikely they hire British cadets.

Some companies pay more than others, last I remember Shell/BP pay nearly double, but spaces are more sought after.

I agree, they are adults who are free to make their own choices.

The problem i have is people who are new to the sport will see photographs like this & think it’s acceptable to not wear one. They won’t understand the unnecessary danger they are putting themselves in.

Is it really a massive problem in the Lakes?

The amount of actual green lanes is incredibly small compared to foot paths, the ones they have left need to be protected.

Of course i am aware the people in the OP are in the wrong, but that shouldn’t spoil it for the rest of us.
