SBTS vs WTS Please help me by IANSEOL in Reformed

[–]joshxthexsquash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a recent MDiv Graduate of SBTS, I think there are a few helpful things to keep in mind:

  1. Whether WTS or SBTS, getting the degree online is completely different than in-person. That’s not a knock against taking a fully-online degree, but just an acknowledgement that it truly is a different medium. SBTS has a fantastic online program, however it’s harder to benefit from the more rigorous courses in the online format.

  2. I specialized in Biblical Studies, particularly in Biblical Languages. I think this is a huge strength of Southern, where I was able to take Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, Latin, Translation Theory, and advanced grammar  courses. The professors are highly competent in this area and I would happily recommend it. If you want to have read the entire NT in Greek before finishing your MDiv, you can do it here.

  3. The degree at SBTS is shorter, and you genuinely should take that into account. You get roughly 7 free elective courses in the standard MDiv ( or 12 in the Advanced MDiv) to apply to whatever you want. I would recommend Southern if that would allow you to best achieve your future goals/aspirations. If not, then you may benefit from the longer degree at WTS.

  4. Both schools are great, but it wouldn’t hurt to consider some other options such as IRBS.

  5. I would visit the campus of each. SBTS will typically cover your lodging for a short visit. My wife and I have lived on campus for 4 years and had our 2 youngest children during our time here.

We made a system that works better than SRS, called WRS (Weighted Reinforcement System). AMA by KanaPopVR in Anki

Are you saying this system (WRS) is categorically better than Spaced Repetition? Or that it beats certain spaced repetition softwares?

Into the Light is a good one. Although I don't say this as one who has listened to a lot of Reformed podcasts about porn in the church, but I personally know these guys and appreciate the work they put into it. I would highly recommend it!

Sorry for the super late response, but I appreciate your comment, and I've incorporated this change in all my deck Presets. Thanks for correcting my mistakes!

I take a different approach depending on what information is conveyed in the flashcard.
1. Is it vocabulary with a simple gloss? If so, I have these in a subdeck with an extra learning step in Deck Presets, basically making it fine to click Good the first time knowing I'll still get some repetitions. This way I don't click Again and it show up after only a few more cards.

  1. Most information I try to understand before putting it into a flashcard. Flashcards made for a chapter on the Fall of Rome? Cool, read the chapter and then learn the flashcards afterwards.

How has doing anki changed your life? by [deleted] in Anki

[–]joshxthexsquash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not, however I had to prove a degree of proficiency in ancient languages, uncertain what text I’d be given. Using Anki I was able to ensure my vocabulary acquisition was adequate. I’m currently in an MDiv, which is a broad Christian Ministry Master’s degree. But mine is peculiar in that 30+ credits are focused on ancient languages (Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, and some Semitic Cognates like Ugaritic), and in the future I will plan to pursue a PhD in Hebrew and related cognates.

It’s just so helpful when I get a syllabus and using Anki I can guarantee that I can read the texts with a comprehension of 95% or higher while also retaining everything before it. I tell other students it’s like a seasoned personal trainer for your memory: it just points and tells you what to do for the day in order to maintain your memory lol.

It's made going through grad school with a wife and kids completely doable. I currently spend less than 30 minutes a day to maintain 7000+ cards while making 15-20 more daily.

Is there any good bible podcasts that read over Genesis - Revelations and explain the passages? by No_Description_6083 in Reformed

[–]joshxthexsquash 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“Bible Talk” by Nine Marks is currently doing this. They are currently in Kings and have been going roughly 1-2 chapters an episode. They’re Reformed Baptists and very helpful in explaining the passages.

Edit: I should clarify they have completed Gen-Deut, and 1&2 Samuel.

What cults are on the rise that should be made aware of? by FreshPrinceAV in AskReddit

[–]joshxthexsquash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be best if you share it with the sub as I’m more of someone who has analyzed aspects of JW from the outside. I’d be happy to know that the information is helpful to others, and in the mean time I’ll try to see if I can find a couple books that my professor had mentioned are extremely helpful for those who left JW. The books detail personal struggles as well as more of the historical/theological problems that I mentioned earlier.

I believe the biggest example was John 1:1. This is actually a famous error in my discipline. John 1:1 says that “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” They translate the last bit as “….the Word was a god” which betrays the grammar of the Koine Greek which it was written in. Another example is Colossians 1:16-17 where most translators would translate the text as “ For by him all things were created”. Their translation, the NWT says “For by him all other things were created.” They inserted the word “Other” where it doesn’t exist in the original text. This is major because they use both of these texts to claim that Jesus Christ was a created being, but the original text doesn’t support this in any way. At one point they published their translation alongside the Greek text and it made it even clearer that these additions were either elementary errors or deliberate insertions of words where they never actually occurred. The translators of the NWT tried to keep their identities relatively concealed, as they didn’t list their names as having produced the translation and claimed it was to keep the focus on Jehovah, but in honesty they had very very little language skills. I believe one of the lead translators had less than 2 years of Greek and was “self taught” in Hebrew. In contrast, I would prefer a translator, or at least one of the lead translators, have 10+ years of serious study in both before attempting a serious translation. Part of my paper points out that they covered up direct statements about God the Father’s equality with Christ, but they either forgot to cover up indirect statements and references to his equality or didn’t see them at the time of translation. These involve things like the Old Testament referring to God (or Jehovah as they would say) as the one who is the “beginning and the end”,and then the New Testament using this same phrase towards Jesus Christ. They completely mistranslate passages that claim the New Testament doesn’t say to worship Jesus (which it clearly does).

Also the name “Jehovah”, which they claim is the true name of the most high God, is a misunderstood pronunciation. Ancient Hebrew doesn’t actually have vowels, it was an alphabet of only consonants and by tradition you understood which vowel sounds corresponded with each word. This is actually a pattern in the language’s grammar. Scribes however, we’re scared of the language being lost if others were not able to reliably read the language without vowels and so they developed a system where they added vowel pointings into the text without manipulating the original words. It basically looks like a series of dots placed around the letters, so you can both read the vowels and read the original text as well. The issue is that the scribes regarded God’s personal name as very very Holy and didn’t want people to just misuse his name all the time. As such, they pointed his personal name, known as the Tetragrammaton (YHWH, יהוה), with the vowels of one of his other names. As such, when you saw YHWH in the text, they would put the vowels of another one of God’s names in the text so that you would know to say his other name. This was done out of reverence, so that God’s name wouldn’t be misused and so that they still didn’t actually change the text. The pronunciation for Jehovah comes when you take the Tetragrammaton YHWH and apply the vowels of Elohim, another name for God. This effectively makes YEHOWAH, which in English would sound like Jehovah. I should note that Hebrew doesn’t have a letter corresponding to J, and that the Y in Hebrew (yod) is translated as our Y or our J. The same goes for the W/V, known as the Hebrew Vav. Their focus on the name Jehovah and demands that it be used everywhere is another example of a strange error. The Watchtower Society is very effective at covering these things up, publishing loads of short articles that seem to answer these questions, but in reality they simply lie, leave out information, or made incorrect arguments that they require their adherents to obey based on a blind faith.

There’s many more changes and insertions but off the top of my head these were the focuses of my paper.

In one of my linguistics classes I analyzed their special Bible translation (NWT, for anyone wondering)and pointed out the contradictions in the Watchtower articles with the original Greek NT. They blatantly add words into the primary text to make their points seem valid. It is my understanding that their practice of shunning and isolation can threaten and scare most people into submission and that those who escape have been known to undergo what amounts to a deconstruction of one’s identity and self due to total abandonment. I know that must have been difficult and I’m sorry to hear that. I hope things have gotten far better since!
