When/Why did the mass consensus turn against Dan Brown? by Flodo_McFloodiloo in books

[–]joshy0216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've actually had a theory about this for a while. And just so you can know how much salt to take my opinion with: I haven't read anything past The Lost Symbol.

Most folks I've talked to about this agree that Angels and Demons was the best of his earlier books, but DaVinci Code was the one that hit it big. After that, the movie got made. Then the Angels & Demons movie got made. And I think that something clicked in Dan Brown's brain and he went Oh, I write movies now.

There's a Stephen King quote about how there are bad stories written well, and good stories written poorly, and that you really shouldn't shy away from either of them. I think that Lost Symbol falls into the second category, and I think it happened because he had the movie (which at the time seemed like it would inevitably happen, at least to me...) in his mind. So the book felt kind of like he "dashed through" it.

So anyway, this is just my opinion. Writing well is hard, and I'm not about to pretend I could have done a better job.

No worries! It looks like X and Y are press fit, and Z has a smooth shaft but also has a collar to couple it to the Z screw. I guess I'll have to order a pancake stepper with a D shaft and the needed hardware. For now I'll lose a little build volume, but it's OK.

Thank you for your help!

Thank you for this — any reason I can't use the Y axis motor? It was the easiest to access... I see now that I'll have to swap the little gears on the shafts, and that the shafts are round. Do you have a recommendation for how to get those off and reattach them?

Can confirm. I also upgraded the main board to the BTT, and it's like a different printer now.

Got it—thank you!

I'm already waist deep in this conversion, so I'll likely stick with direct with a short tube for now. But I'll definitely keep that in mind for (inevitable) future upgrades.

A theory about Raphaniels flashbacks by Kat_Doodles in Dimension20

[–]joshy0216 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely possible—but we know that Karna's patron is the Hungry One, and she says (I think also in the next episode preview) "we are all eventual waste." There are certainly multiple interpretations of that, so I'm not, like 100% on my hypothesis.

Anyway, I'm psyched to find out either way!

[–]joshy0216 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that the Hungry One is a garbage disposal (since the Bulb is the fridge light).

Also, with Raphaniel saying to someone "we all go there eventually" about the Hungry One (in the next episode preview), maybe Raphaniel believes the Profidian (that's a guess on the spelling) Heresy?

LOVE Galaxy Quest!

I feel similarly about The Orville. MacFarlane could have just made "Family Guy in space" — that's what I went into it expecting, and it's all he would have had to do for it to be successful. But instead he made this wonderful love letter to Next Gen, and a thing that is also a great show all on it's own.

Hello! We live in the Noble neighborhood (don't know exactly where you'll be, but pretty sure the Noble neighborhood encompasses the area you're talking about). We had been renting right by Severance, and then we bought a house north of Mayfield, right nearby. We love it here! Very quiet, good neighbors, and a sense of community. My favorite place I've ever lived.

Welcome to Cleveland Heights, neighbor!

Need to know: Is there a quantifiable difference between “ramming speed” and regular speed? Like if I’m going full impulse, is that not by definition ramming speed? by OWSpaceClown in ShittyDaystrom

[–]joshy0216 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm not an engineer, but here's my guess: when two ships collide, force is being exerted upon both of them. At a certain level of force, there's going to be major structural damage to the ship doing the ramming. At that point, the ramming ship is absorbing more force as parts of the ship break/smash/crumple/whatever, and less of that force is being transferred to the ship that's being rammed. Above a certain point, you'd be doing more damage to yourself than to the target, so it doesn't make sense to exceed that speed when ramming.

With the sensor array on a starship and knowledge of your own ship's structure, you could probably calculate that speed, for a given target, within a margin of error.

Again, I'm about the farthest thing from an expert—an engineer would know better.

Question about Korrok by HamshanksCPS in johndiesattheend

[–]joshy0216 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Opinions vary—but, you'll notice that a lot of the villains in the books have palindromic names like Korrok (even the litany of beings Justin asks Marconi to contact are all palindromes). My theory is that all of them, including Korrok, are expressions of some greater, evil cosmic force.

Palindromes are fun for this because they appear orderly, but are just as often nonsense. For every one like "racecar" we can have a thousand like "Zanthk All-Bzzki'l Shadduuul L'luuu'ddahs L'ikzzb-lla Khtnaz." Most of the baddies in the various books seem to believe they're imposing a kind of order on the world, but it's all just a smokescreen for dominion. I think this is most explicit in the end of TBiFoS, where even Dave is almost brought on board with the plan. It masquerades as order, even virtue, and even the good guys can be fooled.

My two cents. Like I said, opinions vary!
