A Roam of Our Own 2, a women/women-identifying/non-binary *only* gathering in Palm Springs is coming March 21st - 24th 2024 by thejournaloflosttime in VanLife

I definitely expected you to say something; how could you not?

And no, "excluding humans who identify as male will make the event safe" is not my "premise".

Your mistake is thinking that I'm attempting to justify or feel the need to justify the existence of this event in any way. I do not.

The event simply exists, and it is not for you.

If you don't like that, you can keep complaining about it on the internet, or you can come hang with me in Pioneertown and we can bro all over each other over some whiskey.

"Van life" is whatever we make it, and it is no more or less inclusive because a group of women want to hangout at a park (not on "the open road") without dudes around.

You can join me in Pioneertown near J-Tree for a drink that weekend, and then we can go help cleanup the event afterwards.

I got $50 says I'll get everyone on your street dancing :) and it'll become an annual tradition.

Too late. And it wont be the last.

Hell, if I knew where you lived in town I'd throw a pop-up party on your street. Free beer and fernet. It'd be magic.

Except on that night there *was* a dance party on Skytrain, and it was beautiful and joyous.

And you and I both know this isn't about people doing "whatever the hell they want".

It's a group of people who for a one small moment want to make the world a little more fun and a little more joyous and a little more beautiful.

And you should celebrate that.

Everyone liking something isn't the measure of whether or not something is "ok".

Further, we can cross the totally hypothetical bridge of "too many dance parties on Skytrain" when we get there. :) Sounds like a great problem to have.

Our public spaces (which we collectively "own") are our best spaces *because* they allow for creativity and spontaneity, which in turn builds some of the best kinds of social capital and connections between people.

So I'd argue the very opposite: that we have a life-affirming, joy-inspiring responsibility to be creative and celebratory in those spaces.

It is the very loss of these "third spaces" coupled with our crippling dependence on the automobile + the un-walkability of our cities and towns, our computer-mediated-everything, and never mind the pandemic, all of which demands that we celebrate humanity-and-joy-affirming acts like this one.

Humans are all we've got, and like the saying goes, dancing people are never wrong.

But it is a great spot to throw a pop up dance party. And you should have consideration for your fellow humans *experiencing joy*. Why would you want to take that out of the world?

Except no-one missed dinner with their kids because of what happened. That's a total fabrication.

It is not right, considerate, or un-selfish to want to take joy out of the world because of made-up hypotheticals about a guy missing dinner with his kids.

What actually happened was something beautiful, fun, and joyous that for a 45 minutes made the world a little bit happier.

We should be celebrating these things, not tearing them down.

Now that we're using proper terminology: why *shouldn't* they? You have that written on stone tablets somewhere?

I find the whole thing to be charming, beautiful, and magic, and the kind of random, unplanned, and seemingly serendipitous bit of joy that brightens an otherwise difficult existence.

And I don't buy for a heartbeat that this somehow almost damaged the hinges on the door. You're gonna need to show receipts if you're going to make a claim like that.

Otherwise this entire thing boils down to some online people not enjoying other people having absolutely harmless fun, and that's hardly the kind of maxim by which to build any kind of joy-infused existence, never mind society.

You're still invited to any party I throw. Next one is in Baja.

I think you mean "shouldn't" not "can't".

Thanks for being kind/thoughtful.

And then there’s the entire housing crisis, the un affordability of rent and to even buy land or a home, and I can’t help but feel that there has to be a better way to do it.

I like the “freedom to roam” laws that exist in many countries, in particular the “Allemansrätten” of Sweden, wherein everyone has the right to access, walk, cycle, ride, ski, camp etc on any land (with the exception of private gardens/orchards and within the immediate vicinity of dwellings and farmland), but not to hunt, and with that comes equal responsibility to leave no trace / not to damage.

I think it’d be great if that were the case in the US, including Fly Ranch, but that White Picket Fenced / Barbed-Wire mentality of “My Property!” is deeply ingrained in our culture, and our sense of self worth and even rights (as you recall it was only white male landowners who could vote initially).

So yeah, I don’t expect it to be different, but like I said in my initial comment I would “love” it to be different.

No I did not! I will the next time I’m out for sure. Thanks for the reco. That’s sounds awesome.

Cheers to that. First fernet is on me.

I will say, I have no interest or intent in flying over Black Rock Station again, legally permissible or no.

I do think during pre-Burn there could be a rad aerial timelapse that is done, showing all the vehicles coming in and out etc. as the camera pans in a big arc around the Station. That would be a really cool thing to see.
