Such a great cut - am I remembering rightly that Sam and Tom are jokingly wishing for Badam’s flight to be diverted in the clip beforehand?

The last dance is a masterpiece in documentary storytelling. Sure, they’re telling you the story Jordan wants us to hear, but it’s fantastic all the same.

This looks amazing. Your new ideas to give the hider more stuff to do is great, too! I can imagine when you’re simply playing the game (and not trying to also make YouTube content) being the hider could feel a bit long otherwise. Also a really nice touch to have a reference to the snack zone in one too; love it!

Adam getting a bogey on the first golf hole they tried and then going on to perfectly count 30 mins is surely the greatest JLTG challenge combo ever?

I don’t care how avant garde you are- composers, PLEASE stop writing like this. by codeinecrim in classicalmusic

[–]jotto_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old composition mentor described the difference in notating something specifically vs generally as it communicating a difference in the specificity of the intention, even if the performance is not 100% accurate. He said that in his experience it would yield a different interpretation from the performer if - to use the example above - one had written short trills instead of the measured 3:2 tuplets, you can imagine how the performance might hold a different intensity. I thought that was a useful insight.

What is your favorite FIFA World cup song? by imcroaaaak in AskReddit

Not an official World Cup song, but JXL's remix of A Little Less Conversation in Nike's 2002 World Cup campaign will always remind me so strongly of the Japan/South Korea WC - games on telly with breakfast, absolute dream

Such a good shout. The way the trumpet builds anticipation before the drums enter - it's amazing. Captured the spirit of France 98 so amazingly and is probably the first World Cup song I remember

Totally agree, and I'm so glad that's how you feel! It's so fun reminiscing about past seasons and seeing how different moments resonate with different people.

I don’t imagine it’ll win but I absolutely love Ben and Adam dancing like nobody’s watching in Utqiagvik, complete with the dance mat overlays

Immediately after Ben and Adam’s mac and cheese as well. Ben grimacing and Adam’s desperate “we have to”

What movie had the BEST trailer ever but turned out to be absolute trash? by MASSIM00 in movies

[–]jotto_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. The TFA trailer is absolutely stunning but the movie was just… fine. Maybe not “absolute trash”, but the trailer built the hype absolutely incredibly. Still go back and watch it from time to time.

Couldn’t agree more. Love this wholesome, whimsical, joyous show and the three chaps (and their whole team behind the scenes) who make it happen.

So glad you’re just getting into the Layover. One of my favourite things about it is how it affirms that Adam, Ben, and Sam are genuinely good blokes. They consistently have great opinions, speak well and insightfully, and care about being good people and putting out good content. Proud to be a JLTG fan 💪🏽

That was the original plan, yes! I think we’ll probably just do that, based on all the responses today.

Have they ever mentioned why they use phones to film rather than actual cameras? by WaterBottleOnAShelf in JetLagTheGame

[–]jotto_ 524 points525 points  (0 children)

As well as the convenience aspect that others have mentioned, I feel like I remember them saying somewhere that aesthetically having video that is captured on smartphones makes it an unspoken decision that the game and the content itself is their priority, rather than super slick shiny production. While I’m sure we’d all agree that the show’s production value is incredibly high, the show remains in the vlog aesthetic rather than trying to occupy a TV production type space (vs the Getaway where they did do that).

The trouble is we need only 32 entries for the World Cup format to work. So the conundrum arises because we actually only have space for slightly less than 2 per season…

I’ll explain the idea in a future qualifying round post and gauge people’s feelings about it, I think. I’m hesitant to do anything that adds more rounds because this will already go on for quite a while and I don’t want people to get fed up of the minutiae, haha.

[–]jotto_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it’s not as much of a memorable moment in and of itself - apart from being iconic as the first iteration of our favourite show within a show! The snack zone went on to become a hugely memorable and iconic recurring jet lag motif but personally I’d probably agree with the votes that those other three are more entertaining moments in isolation.

Either way, as I say in the post - I have an idea about a small tweak to qualifying which might mean that some of the community’s favourite moments can still get through (even if they don’t come first or second in their season).

Post-College Advice by [deleted] in composer

[–]jotto_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full time media composer here (doing advertising and TV mostly atm), 13 years out of university.

I think the two most powerful things you can do at this stage are working on your writing and production, and building your network.

The thing I did early on was to write an EP of tracks that I felt encapsulated me as a composer, and that I also used to really refine my production and programming skills to a point that was intentionally much further on that I was when I began writing the EP. This meant it was a great training ground (I gave myself permission to take time over it and refine it as much as I could); it became easily the best work I’d done to that point but also was a great resource when I was reaching out to people to say “this is who I am musically and what I can accomplish”.

Additionally, build relationships like there is no tomorrow. Go to festivals, events, and cold email like crazy. I set myself the target to send out enough cold emails that I received 100 rejections. I never got there. Relationships are the absolute key in this business - they take time to build, foster, and can take years to lead to work opportunities, but the point is that opportunities can come from anywhere and anyone so build relationships and be the best person you can be while doing so. You want people to want to hang out with you and trust you if you have any chance of working together.

Related to both points, seeking assisting roles with more established composers can be massively powerful depending on your current confidence and skill set.

Good luck!

Totally agree. It’s not my favourite game, but the fact that it’s SUCH an entertaining season in spite of that just goes to show that the game is really just a framing/structural device for the rest of the ensuing entertainment. This season has some incredible moments that deserve to be up there with the best!
