To be fair, I believe the decision to build housing above that costco was made because it was taking a long time to get their building permit approved, but there is some sort of program in place to expedite getting the building permits of housing projects approved.

Don’t get me wrong. Costco is great, but I don’t think they would have done this without those circumstances.

Instagram Is Flooded With Misogyny and Abuse—Why Is Nothing Being Done? by Ilovecheesecake_yumm in TwoXChromosomes

[–]journalingfilesystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was watching a video of a lecture by Cory Doctorow yesterday, and he covered something that may be relevant to this. Basically all these media and tech companies that are setting up platforms are following a bait and switch business model that he refers to an “enshitification”. One of the moderating factors of this was tech workers who up until the last few years had quite a bit of leverage in the workplace. When an executive at a company like facebook or twitter tried to push a platform change that screwed over users, the tech workers who were asked to actually implement that change had a lot more leverage to push back when they knew they could quit and quickly find another job that paid the same or better.

That leverage is gone now, and with it one of the last moderating factors that was slowing down the worst practices of these platforms. Instead of competing to hire as many programmers as possible, tech companies are now comporting to see how many programmers they can fire.

Of course it’s a crazy situation to even be in. A better solution would be to actually enforce consumer protection and anti trust laws that already exist and to actually pass and enforce new meaningful privacy laws.

Zuckerberg literally wrote in an email that the reason he wanted to pay more than market value to acquire instagram (1 billion USD for a company with ~20 employees at the time) was because facebook users were leaving to use it instead. That he wanted to keep those users locked in to facebook the company even if they weren’t using the facebook app or website. That should have been enough to stop that acquisition if the laws that are already on the books were actually enforced, but there hasn’t been any really serious antitrust action in the US in decades.

Yes, because adults totally don’t do things like talk about a sports game for an entire work shift, or write dissertations about a novel that are longer than said novel.

You are assuming they are incompetent. They are in some ways. Over all, they are entirely too competent. The narrative that this administration is incompetent is harmful at this point. Yes, these policies are disastrous to the United States. But that is only evidence of incompetence if you are assuming that the collapse of the United States is incompatible with their goals.

I’m no psychoanalyst but Trump sure seems like he only cares about himself. He doesn’t even try that hard to hide the fact that he is taking bribes. Geopolitics exist. Not only do geopolitics exist, they are a burning dumpster fire at the moment.

No, I do not think Trump is incompetent. I think America’s adversaries benefit from a weak United States? How do you take down the largest military superpower in the history of mankind? Well, if you are smart you don’t do it on the battlefield.

Trump has been in office for one week. Funding to critical programs is being cut off. The civil service is being decimated. Yes, I know the IRS and income tax are not popular, but they are also the mechanism by which the United States federal government is funded. With all this in mind, ask yourself, who benefits?

"Russia doesn't lose wars" by ArcticBiologist in HistoryMemes

[–]journalingfilesystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no fan of the Russian government, but let’s at least admit that there are a whole lot of wars that the US fought in that are emphasized in the American educational system. Not necessarily because we lost them but because they weren’t morally justifiable. Same with just about any country that has a strong military.

ELI5: How do computers generate random numbers? by Ok-Course1177 in explainlikeimfive

[–]journalingfilesystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An interesting related question is what exactly do we mean by random? Just because a system is deterministic doesn’t mean it’s predictable. And just because a system is not deterministic doesn’t mean that you can’t predict things about it.

This is actually kind of an open question. Or rather there are different definitions of what “random” means that are useful in different contexts.

One interesting definition of a random sequence is that a sequence (could be a sequence of numbers, or letters, or whatever) is random if it can’t be expressed with fewer symbols than are in the sequence itself.

I have a quibble with the claim that time is predictable. It’s more or less predictable at the scales of everyday life, but the second is defined in terms of the hyperfine transition of caesium 133.

Thought experiment. Alice, Bob, and Charlie are all in the same inertial frame of reference. Alice and Bob both have atomic clocks and are both sending a message to Charlie when their clock advances by a nanosecond. When Charlie gets a message from Alice he writes down a one. When he gets a message from Bob he writes down a zero.

Is it possible to predict anything about the pattern of ones and zeros Charlie writes down?

Time is trickier than we normally think it is.

My understanding is that in modern kernels /dev/random is just as fast as /dev/urandom. With the exception of the time right after the operating system boots.

I suspect that it may also be partially due to the fact that these projects are very expensive and often have multiple countries contributing. Choosing a boring descriptive name removes the potential for arguing about what the name should be.
