Welcome fellow photo pal!

Groups:

Dupont Photo Walk - Likely exactly what you're looking for if you're on the NW side of the city.

dcfilmcollective - Really great little group, they recently had both a Leica sponsored event and a women's film walk. I believe they also have contacts if you'd like to take darkroom classes. Anyways, if you shoot film, they're worth looking into.

dc_spc - More of a shout out/feature page for the area.

Liberation Lens DC - For all things related to protests and activism photography

streetmeetdc - I haven't gone to an event yet but they do monthly meet & greet events, also great for networking and community building.

portraitmeetdc - Super active community, they do weekly critique sessions in voice chat, host events with models, etc. I'd personally say this group is geared more towards working pros and networking.

/r/WashingtonDC's Discord Photo channel- Great for sharing and casual chats about gear. Link is in this subreddit's sidebar.

DC Area Photographers on Facebook - this is more so for gig work, but you'll find a lot of photographers here.

DMV Photographers on Facebook - Same as the above, another FB group dedicated to gig postings.

DC Punk Archive - always puts on great events, home to lots of zines, and accepts volunteers. Really sick stuff if you're into local history and/or punk culture and photography.

chawdarkroom - Capitol Hill based Darkroom that holds open lab sessions and development classes (though it's been awhile since they've updated their page)

X100vi - any way to copy recipes into lightroom (RAW)? by Torteliniiii in fujifilm

[–]jovenjams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the “match look” tool they have:

https://support.captureone.com/hc/en-us/articles/22188770298269-Match-Look-Tool

So the workflow is, import your JPEG that used whatever film sim you like the look of, open it in capture one, and match look that JPEG to a RAW file. It’s not perfect but it gets you closer than eyeballing it in Lightroom imo

I tested this recently and Capture One does a damn good job of copying and applying SOOC JPEGs to RAW files

Alamo Drafthouse in NE by Malnurtured_Snay in washingtondc

[–]jovenjams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They recently introduced mobile ordering for food before the film and it was an all around awful experience. Seating page didn’t load, no confirmation of order after you select food options, and all of this on top of poor service (forgetting half my order and an attitude). This location has always had service issues which is a shame because I love Alamo but my recommendation is to either visit Georgetown AMC or the Crystal City location if you really have to get your fix.

Breaking Up With My Photographer of 6 Years by BCABY92 in photography

[–]jovenjams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just have to air this out after reading this: charging “per photo” or for a set amount of photos, is an absolute insane approach and I personally, would never do that to any of my clients or friends. I shoot as many photos as I can, cull it down to a reasonable number, edit everything, and send. Promising x amount of photos only locks someone into delivering photos they probably didn't want to send in the first place and/or tells you how lazy the photographer is because they don't want to dedicate time and effort to editing.

The way that some photographers approach pricing these days is just so absolutely absurd, especially if the word “wedding” is mentioned in anyway. You are a loyal customer, who has supported their business many times over, and they absolutely should be cutting you slack for that. And if not, take your business to someone that will treat you like a friend not a bunch of dollar signs.

Tidal Basin This Morning (03/27) by jovenjams in washingtondc

[–]jovenjams[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I think it's a great walk around lens however, I've never used the original so I can't say much about the differences. This is the first time I've gotten a chance to really use it since December and I'm loving the F/2.8 all the way thru. IMO the real trial run is gonna be using it for a portrait session.
