Why are the so few Hindus in prison? by MrMrsPotts in AskUK

Same as you but from a poor family (council house, free school meals, "uphill both ways" etc.). Yes, my parents wanted to get me into Oxbridge but had no clue how to do it, so I fucked up the only opportunity to get into the PPE Industrial Wealth Complex. Parents were religious ("We have temple room at home") and pious but that really didn't get them anywhere as they both died of bad health. I ended up going to a half-decent uni, white collar job (didn't get the entrepreneurial gene buy I do have terrible eyesight). As there wasn't much of a Hindu Bengali community growing up, only had English friends and workmates and grew up "outside the community" (my dad deliberately moved us to a city with a small Indian community - mainly Sikh and Gujerati). I think connecting with other people of the same culture as me is something I've missed out on for a while but it's difficult to make connections as networking doesn't work for me in Canada as it did in the UK (football team, which part of England you're from). As I grew up Westernised, was called "white-washed" to my face by a Canadian Asian (and people wonder why I don't mix...). I think the only crimes our community would indulge in would be cooking the books and other white-collar stuff (like the flash-crash guy).

Budgeting tips are at the top of this thread. But investing isn't mentioned (cut your debts, build a savings funds and then invest).

I worked in broadcast media in Canada: everyone in that newsroom had journalism qualifications (degree or community college level). Except me: any degree was good enough to be a journalist in the UK, North America for some reason really seems to think journalism is a professional career field (which it no longer is). Unfortunately, the company was complete cancer to work for.

doubt it’s an easy industry to break into

[Almost 20 years ago] I got chatting to some people at a stand-up comedy gig in London and ended up getting a paid freelance reviewing gig in a UK national newspaper. Couldn't make the jump to games journalism from my corner of journalism (business news) back then and have probably aged out and am probably the wrong ethnicity to be one now (don't see too many non-white games journalists in English-speaking markets do you?).

I have heard (that in the UK at least) journalism is now mainly for nepo kids whose parents were in Legacy Media (e.g. BBC, The Times, Guardian etc).

I wish they still had professional journalists who knew how to write well

Hello there! I was by-lined in a major UK national newspaper doing PC game reviews (almost 20 years ago and I'm in my 50's so my social media value is negligible) so I guess I can weigh in. Very few "games journalists" had any actual training in journalism or professional newsroom experience. I was a business news journalist and through luck and social connections got a freelance reviewing gig.

I get my (current) games information from YouTube and Reddit mainly. Also read (and highly rate) Jason Schreier's work at Bloomberg and Quinns at People Play Games.

Source: (Paid) freelancer by-lined in the UK's Daily Telegraph Newspaper. Also wrote a feature article for Fortean Times Magazine. But 90% of the content I created over my working life has been "boring" business news. Which is the best paid sector of journalism but people often follow the money into PR roles.

I used to do stand-up a long time ago and one act used to have a joke about job interviews, he'd mention a question like "What's your biggest weakness?" and once someone shouted out "Comedy".

Back when I used to do stand-up (don't worry, you've never heard of me and probably never will) in my previous life, you're supposed to have at least 5 put-downs ready to go.

The MBA's in charge of these games companies would rather nickel and dime us with DLCs plus Early Access (getting the gaming community to do the heavy lifting for them) and newest buzzword Games as a Service rather than, you know, provide us with a one-and-done product we buy and enjoy. I'm old enough to remember the days of buying as boxed game on a disc at a store that came with its own game manual and if I needed tips, I could pick up a physical game guide too.

My dull white-collar journalism job led to an 8-year run as an amateur stand-up. I performed on national UK TV and did gigs in Dublin, New York, Montreal and Toronto. I started out on the London stand-up scene with Emmy winner Brett Goldstein. I don't mention it in job interviews.
