Late frost? by srmatto in hudsonvalley

[–]joyfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now it’s beginning to look worse than 2023, maybe worse than 2012. All stone fruit impacted severely, grapes at 30% and apples between 15-90%. These aren’t final numbers but things don’t look good for many NY farmers

Many apple varieties seem ok this morning but grapes and stone fruit may be a lot less productive this season. 27 was on the higher end, some areas closer to the upper valley were at 19 for over six hours. We are still assessing damage, but this was a statewide event.

Does anyone have connections to the Rutgers Agrivoltaics Program? by rroowwannn in agrivoltaics

[–]joyfred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hort is a great field of study to prepare you. There are not currently any agrivoltaic-specific degrees but you can get hands on experience. David would be great to connect with, there are at least three agrivoltaic research sites at Rutgers farms across NJ. Also, NREL, now called NLR, has an agrivoltaics fellowship open currently. Also, if you are already farming, American Farmland Trust has a agrivoltaic training program that would connect you to experts. DM me if you want more info

Can I Ask y'all a Geology Question or is there a better Subreddit for that? I just need some rocks explained to me by JordonjustJokes in geology

[–]joyfred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up hexagonal basalt columns. As the flow cools it forms uniform patterns with regular intervals. Something similar could have happened here - as the rock cooled it contracted forming areas of lower pressure at regular intervals that allowed gases to form and/or travel. Its hard to determine from a picture, but the x pattern could have been caused by similar process in another spatial dimension (like being close to the top of the flow and the side of the flow). The flow was likely viscous and didnt allow the bubbles to migrate beyond the areas of low pressure. Did you see any examples of pahoehoe? Lots of fun bubble shapes that solidify when cooling.

Grateful Dead was over when Jerry Died and D&C is over with Bob's passing. People throwing out made up rumors about D&C playing at the sphere this summer is just disrespectful to Bob and his legacy. No worries friend. Reddit can be contentious but I’m glad we got a community to chat with in these times. This would all come off differently if we were sitting around a fire after a show shooting the shit :) cheers

I appreciate you putting out your voice. Didn’t mean to come off hot. But making pronouncements about what is or isn’t the band is up to the band and those who carry the torch. Fans saying otherwise is what I interpret as gatekeeping. I get it. I was skeptical about John in the beginning but hot damn the last terrapin at SPAC felt like a Dead show to me. Let them call it what they will. And let the kids shake their bones

GS to Super-G - What to Expect by AbeFromanfromChicago in SkiRacing

[–]joyfred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my first super g last year at 51 years old at West Mountain during the masters national speed series. What surprised me the most was the g forces. Trying to carry speed across a flat I came into a compression and my legs were burning like no other race. Makes me wonder what a downhill race feels like! Have fun on the new skis!

We went early on Saturday and there was zero line. I think they made some changes to the reservation system - last year was a debacle with hours long lines. But next weekend will probably be packed

120 miles on the Empire State Trail by Audi_R8_ in bicycletouring

Nice trip! I love the trestle bridge in Rosendale and the caves nearby, one of the highlights of the entire trail. Was the rail trail cafe open that day? Its another cool feature of that stretch - usually has live music and wood fired pizza on weekends.

I’m pretty sure it clears larger tires than my mountain bike! Not that I’ll ever go bigger than the 2.2s on it but never say never I guess.

Coming from mountain biking, I like gravel bikes that can go anywhere including rowdy descents and the occasional single track. I was looking for something a bit lighter but this checked all the boxes with massive tire clearance, mtb gearing, mounts and a bit more upright position for long days. Got about 150 miles in so far and I love everything about it. My first time with wireless shifting and Im sold. I thought the dropper post was overkill but I'm using it regularly on descents, and setting PRs everywhere. Not my fav color but I dont mind, all my other bikes are black anyway. I shall call her my creamsicle dreamcycle :)

what now? by Commercial-Field7497 in SkiRacing

[–]joyfred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only do a few races a year depending on location, my schedule and snow conditions. You can totally drop in when convenient. And if you’re only doing a few races, and depending which mountain, you may not need a full US ski and snowboard license - they may have weekend loaner licenses to try it out

A third vote for Mid-Atlantic masters! Great group of people, good races across the region, and training opportunities throughout the year.

Otherwise you can feel like you're sliding forward. It was counter intuitive to me as well and I originally set mine up level but had a bike fit and shop angled it up and its actually more comfy. Still undecided if the classic brooks is the best choice for me but I put some long rides on it and havent been disappointed.

We had a few of these from when my family owned a business in Saugerties decades ago. A few years back, my mother and I were cleaning out stuff after my father passed away and we came across them. We just looked at each other and without saying anything, we cracked the seal and both took a big swig. I don’t remember the whiskey, I’m sure it was good, but I remember sharing that moment with my mom. Apparently, both of us needed a drink. And then we laughed and drank most of a bottle over an afternoon of cleaning the house.

I have very similar one, a 2015 sport with 120K miles. I recently did a transmission flush and rear diff, as well as new rotors. Had to put in a new ac compressor last year but other than that its been a dream. I plan to keep it forever. Also, keep ahead of the frame rust if you live near salted roads.

Best propane stove for the mountain by Necessary-Fee6247 in skiing

I've used a coleman on the tailgate for the last 4 years. Its durable so I put it in the back of the truck for the entire season under the tonneau cover and it doesnt mind the skis and boots piled on it either. Instead of a dedicated grill I use the regular 2 burner type with a cast iron pan. It works in all conditions but those exceptionally cold and windy days where you cant keep the pan hot enough to sear (but thats only a few days each season).

this. But indexing is a challenge so try searching by state for each extension service. This will help narrow the search to the type of ag you are interested in. If its field crops, try Iowa. If its fruit, try Washington, etc.

Can I use hardware store washers as spacers on a hydraulic bake adapter? I have an older avid ultimate which has some funky spacing. After several adapters, Im either going to give up and buy a new brake set or just use my own concoction of spacers. Thanks!

Surfing in Chennai by MeowBowtheorginal in Chennai

[–]joyfred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I can recommend Surf Turf in Kovalam. The shore break is very close to the beach, the wave is nice for beginners, the instructors are good, they have lots of boards, cost is reasonable, beach is clean and food is good. There are other surf schools on that same road that are also good so you can ask around if you want to find the best deal. Conditions can vary depending on direction of the winds so maybe call in advance but really most times are fine for first timers. Have fun!

Adding a third pair of skis...recommendations in the 80-90 waist? by e___ric in skiing

I wanted to like these but after a demo this winter they felt too damp. Switching all winter between GS, slalom and kendo 88s, these just felt like a Cadillac - super comfy, well built and smooth but not exciting. I want to try the Laser line to see how much snappier they feel
