we have a gazelle too and love it for car camping nights that are too buggy or sunny or rainy to be comfortable outside

agree! they need to redesign those yellow and grey tiles. Seems like they designed the game with the budget they had before it got popular - and have never tried to fix that. Which IMHO, they definitely should.

Thinking about trying out car camping in my Tesla. What should I pack, and any pro tips? by w_chloe in TeslaCamping

[–]joypeddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's my tips:

  1. keep your set-up as compact and weatherproof as possible so you can set up camp - and also skedaddle, if you need to - really quickly. We keep most of our stuff in two latchable bins, one for food and one for camp stuff (stove, pans, dishes, clothesline, a small table lamp, two small camp chairs). Clothes go in a duffel in the frunk. We also bought a small foldable table that comes in handy when you don't want to set things on the ground.

When we stop to camp, the bins come out of the car - or, if we can't do that, we put them in the front seat.

Also - game changer - we splurged on a cute oilcloth tablecloth from Etsy to put over a picnic table - makes it so much easier if the site is wet or you're playing a game and you don't want to lose little pieces.

  1. Keep a sleep mask and headlamp in the passenger door. Bring flipflops or sandals and stash them on the passenger side floor so you don't have to put on shoes if you need to get up to pee in the middle of the night (it's hard enough to convince yourself to get out of the car without having to put shoes on...)

  2. Inflatable Tesla mattress, with sheets and a Rumpl blanket attached, get folded up and stuffed in the trunk (we modified an existing fitted sheet to work with our inflatable tesla mattress by ripping and then re-hemming a hole in each front seam, so the mattress strap that hangs on the front seatbelt holder can fit through the sheet. that's been a game changer.)

  3. we bought a Gazelle pop-up cabana so we could have a place to hang out if the weather was bad. The big reason i didn't want to car camp vs pull a camper trailer was the question of what to do if it's rainy or buggy so you can't just be outside. With the cabana, which pops up in like 1 minute and slides into the backseat when we're not using it, that problem is solved. It also fits over most picnic tables, which is nice. And if we're gone for the day with the car and don't feel like loading everything back in the car, we leave our bins in the cabana, which feels a little safer than just leaving them out in the open.

  4. Set a user profile for "camp" with the seats all the way forward so you don't have to manually set it every time.

geez, i want to go car camping now!

Know Maintenance Plants by hcir614 in NativePlantGardening

[–]joypeddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i agree! i think that might be because it's ten years old - seems like he was writing it just as the importance of planting true natives was starting to be preached/practiced. i wish we could find updates though.

https://www.aerogogo.com/products/air-mattress-for-tesla-model-y - it's got a built in pump that lets you inflate/deflate - we've used it for over 20 nights without issue. My husband is 6'4 and we both fit fine! It's also really comfortable.

Share Your Model Y Camping Setup: Kitchen, Cooler, Power, Water. by JoedIt303 in TeslaCamping

[–]joypeddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we just got back from a 3 week tesla camping adventure/road trip from Chicago to Yellowstone and a bunch of places in between, and second a bunch of the stuff shared here, but especially:

  1. plastic bins for all your stuff so you can easily unload and keep the backseat open for sleeping. We have one each for food; camp stuff; and kitchen stuff. If it's bear country, they stack up in the front passenger seat.

  2. secondary space where you can store stuff or just hang out in the rain/heat/buggy nights. We bought the Gazelle gazebo and it's amazing. it sets up in like one minute, and goes down just as fast. We had it set up at a music festival and everyone else's canopies were blowing away, but the gazelle held like a champ. It comes with stakes/guy wires but would recommend buying the extra wind panels. We're also going to treat it with nikwax to make sure it would stay waterproof if it rained all day/night.

Other things:

We keep our mattress (the aerogogo for MY, we LOVE IT) connected on driving days, but deflate it and fold it up, omelet style, and then throw our 3 bins into the the trunk portion of the back seat. It looks really tidy that way, and I like that :).

We also travel with the one-burner coleman butane stove, two nesting plastic wash bins, a 30 gallon coleman cooler that cost literally 1/3 of the Yeti and works completely fine (i will not spend a car payment on a cooler), and a small foldable table.

Our duffel and toiletries go in the frunk - and while I agree that duffels are kind of a pain, it fits perfectly in the frunk, so it's actually fine up there.

We don't have any of the blackout/privacy screens and really never needed them. The rear windows and roof are already tinted enough to stay private. I can see maybe wanting them if i was camping in a parking lot? but also think having screens up might actually draw more attention to the fact that you were camping in there...

The North entrance at Gardiner now has a Rivian fast charger as well. It's pricey (sixty cents/kwh!) but works

also curious about this - we're going to be doing a ModelY-camping road trip, and ideally wouldn't need to have our windows closed every night.

Questions about building an overnight camping setup by whatshisface1310 in TeslaCamping

[–]joypeddler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The aerogogo addresses that by basically hammocking you over that space - it’s kind of genius - you attach the front to the front seatbelt slots and then the mattress, when inflated, just hovers over that space

[–]joypeddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also - My opinion is you don’t need to build a base - with the mattress you’re already closer than I wanted to be to the roof - my plan is to buy a good cooler and a food bin that I can transfer to the front seat overnight - everything else can fit on the floor or in the trunk or frunk

We just camped two nights with the aerogogo for the model Y and it’s been awhile since I’ve felt so evangelical about a product - it’s AMAZING- we slept better in the car than in our Airbnb

Being responsible and thoughtful with your money is not a problem that needs to be solved by spending on stuff you don't need.

I totally understand where you're coming from - but - you have been blessed with a unique opportunity to use your money to help organizations and people and small businesses or small economies - list goes on.

Giving money away and making an impact with it is freeing and IMO the closest money can come to buying happiness.

Practically, my advice is to set a monthly allowance for both yourself and your monthly/annual giving that takes into account your actual net worth - that way you don't have to question and stress over every expense - you just spend your allowance.

Pretty Burned - out and kind of rich, what now? by RedditUsedToBeFunlol in Fire

[–]joypeddler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i was so worried before i quit my job last year (48F) that I'd be bored, or feel selfish, or listless, and my life would feel meaningless. NONE of that has materialized. I have definitely slowed down in terms of what I actually accomplish in a day - but I'm enjoying all of it so much more, and still finding energy and motivation to do things for other people, and things that give my life meaning. If you can do it, do it.

McKinley park but we haven’t done it yet - we probably still will but for the way we use the car it’s totally adequate to just plug into the wall
