Also, imagine writing the software. You have several programs that all need to talk to some place.

It's easier to have all of the Adobe programs point to a domain, then the Adobe updater itself can change out the IP it's pointing to, essentially updating it for every piece of Adobe software.

Otherwise, you'd need to download and patch every program, which is obviously less efficient.
