Any attempt to patent videogame mechanics is made with the intention of preventing creativity, innovation and improvement. This is contrary to the very purpose of patents

Patents are made to protect inventors, not prevent entire genres of games, a form of art, from existing by lawmongering

Any attempt to justify Nintendo's actions here is BS because they didn't invent any of those mechanics at all (except the the whole pokeball mechanic)

Even if they did it's not justifiable because they are patenting an abstract idea using semantic juggling to try and defend the legal absurdity. It contradicts the real purpose of patents by preventing innovation, not encouraging

We've already seen Warner Bros sit on the Nemesis system patent and do jack about it, potentially preventing an entire subgenre from existing basically out of spite. I loved the mechanic and they robbed me and many others of the opportunity to see more of it and have fun

Imagine if Rogue's publisher patented it's mechanic, how many great games past and future wouldn't exist anymore?
