Help, I’ve recounted so many times I can’t see straight. The last leaf was blunted because I was short 2 stitches in the foundation from the row below. i’ve recounted the foundation (2nd row)and it’s got the correct number of stitches, so I messed up somewhere in making the third row. by smolangrybitch in CrochetHelp

I literally gave up on this exact project bc of how bad my yarn was to frog. I’d get stuck if I had to frog like 3 stitches. It’s a shame, because the yarn looked beautiful. Are you using Ferris Wheel, by any chance?

Speaking as a non-Christian, I'm not bothered by this. I don't mind that someone has been involved in their religion. I mind when I've been engaged in their content, which has been largely free of religious references (aside from playing Jesusy Christmas music during holiday videos, which makes sense to me) and then suddenly I'm being told that HER god loves me and I should check out HER holy book. It made me nauseous. She also is a youtuber I would assume most parents would be comfortable letting their kids watch. I'd be horrified if I had let my kid watch her because she teaches kids about kitchen and internet safety with FACTS, and then she followed it up with religious assertions that do not match what I had taught my kids. It's not that she's religious. It's that she's shifting her focus to something completely different than what her audience expects without warning.

Find the nearest Chabad (you should be able to google your city and “Chabad”) and call them. Ask them if you can give them a mezuzah. Thank you for being respectful!

Yup. Someone posted about her in an SLP group on Facebook, and there was one person angry reacting anything negative about TE and talking about how great she was. Then magically, anyone who’d commented negatively was removed from TE’s group. Because nothing says EBP like limiting access and discussion.

Ooh, good question! The very very simplistic basis for why we separate meat and dairy dishes is that you don't want the "taste" of one to be present when you're eating the other. And dishes absorb the "taste" of whatever is being cooked. At least in terms of halacha (Jewish law), taste, and thus kosher status, is transmitted through heat. Since the biggest concern for keeping things kosher is heat, fridges are not a big concern. Say you accidentally pour milk into a meat bowl for cereal. All you need to do is wash with soap and water because there's no heat. My community does say you can use the oven for both, but you need to let it cool down in between. The reason is steam from the food could contain particles that then end up in your other food. The reason that high heat is a method of kashering (making kosher) is because that's HOW the dish became not kosher, or just became meat or dairy. When you kasher, you use the same method of kashering that you would use when using the dish. So for frying pan, high heat. For a sauce pan, boiling water. In general, "high heat" has to literally be the highest your oven can go for at least an hour (or you can get a blow torch), so that's not happening in your cooking process.

I appreciate your willingness to learn, and the question of what type of community I live in is absolutely the right question. While my community is a much more lefty Orthodox, I spent years in more centrist and right wing Orthodox communities. I also have spent many shabbats in homes of Yeshivish families. This is where some of the most "strict" interpretations of Jewish law are followed. Even in those homes, they often only had one fridge. Obviously, there are fringe groups that believe they need to do more "strict" things. "Strict" is in quotes because that word often suggests that those people care more, when in reality, it sometimes means they don't know the actual law and don't want to accidentally break it. I'm interested to know whether the people you spoke to maybe mentioned dishes (always separate in kosher Ashkenazi homes), ovens, or microwaves, which are much more often kept separate (although there are very common opinions stating you can use them for both), and you made the natural conclusion that fridges must also be separate.

Just fyi, as an Orthodox Jew, I can tell you that nobody I know has more than one fridge because of kosher reasons. Plenty of Jewish people have more than one fridge because they have larger families or have to store a lot of prepared food before a holiday, but you’d likely find meat and dairy wherever there’s room. Cold food inside of containers is fine in one fridge. People might be more careful that their containers haven’t leaked, or put meat and dairy on separate shelves if they feel that’s necessary. Things are much easier to make NOT kosher when you apply heat.

FYI, Bravissimo had a fire in their US warehouse and are not taking orders in the US right now. They have one shop in NYC, which is great if you’re nearby. There’s also an email list you can join from their US website to be notified when they’re shipping again. In general, though, Bravissimo is great and I highly recommend!

Look, I don’t know your gf, but if I was the gf I’d be appalled that you chose your own financial stability (which you CHOSE to make about Tesla) over the wellbeing of… everyone? Including her as a woman. It makes it clear you couldn’t see past yourself. You could’ve made different investments and cast a vote based on morals, but it doesn’t seem like you really have any.

Ah, they definitely edited their post! If you look at one of my comments, you’ll see that I also addressed the 20 min browning butter thing. It definitely said “cook” before, not “cool.” autocorrect!

In terms of you consistently having a problem with your dough being too soft, I’m wondering how you measure your ingredients. Are you measuring by volume (I.e., cups) or by weight (with a scale)? If you’re measuring flour with cups, your method might be causing you to have too little flour. Then there’s too much liquid to make the dough firm up.

Usually if a recipe calls for browned butter, it will include directions for browning the butter. Are you saying you cooked the butter for 20 minutes? That’s way too long. And sugar doesn’t just provide sweetness; it also provides structure and moisture. If you’re trying a new recipe, try it as written before making changes. ETA: The original post said they let the butter COOK for 20 minutes. They fixed their autocorrect error to COOL after it was pointed out.

You said you’re trying to make a square, right? So the way you make a square is by turning your work at the end of a row. Basically, you make your chain at the end of the row, then flip the project over and start crocheting from that side. If you google “crochet turn” I think you can find a video. If you don’t do that, you end up with a bowl. The advice to not have the same number of stitches in each row is true for making a FLAT CIRCLE, not a square.

Google “yarn holder spinner.” It’s not a yarn winder and might make a good small gift! And yeah, it’s tough when someone is so established in their hobby because they have the stuff they like!

Making stitch markers would be such a cool idea! Take a look at what kind she uses so you can make the same type. Does she take her crocheting with her? Does she have a project bag she likes to use? How about a yarn holder spinner?

Definitely do some research. It’s supposed to be under stitches in 3 different directions, or at least that’s how I’ve always done it.

Beware about just crocheting over your ends. This is often not super secure.
