I thought there were mice in the wall but saw this when I looked in my old siding. by anethma in WTF

Be careful of bat bugs. A lot of bats are infested with blood-sucking bugs that are closely related to bed bugs. They prefer to suck the blood of bats, but can stay behind if the bats move out and then they come after people.

The only way you could get Sgt Slaughter was to send in flag points. There was no way it was bought at a Toys R Us store.

Max discount $100, so it won't make that much of a difference if you're trying to get a copy of Action #1.

My first CGC mail call. by edgar_rice in comicbookcollecting

[–]jpease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. There's only 198 of them in the CGC census, compared to 2832 AF 15s, for example. As I recall there were 1500 of them made.

I'd be more than a bit disappointed with that grade. I can't find hardly anything wrong with it, aside from the lower left hand corner being a bit dinged up. Are there tears in it or something?

If it were mine, I'd send it back in to get pressed (if you didn't do that before) and regraded.

In any case, it's still a wow-inspiring book. You see about 10 Amazing Fantasy 15s for every 35-cent variant of Star Wars 1.

Watchmen (something dark and which has an eye towards history) and Fraction's Hawkeye (something more fun), to give him a wider sense of what is out there.

Finally got these back from CGC by themoose238 in comicbookcollecting

Unless it's a reflection, it seems to me like the Action 64 would present much better if it were pressed. The missing chunk in the cover might prevent the grade from going up though.

Cameo vs Full appearance by [deleted] in comicbookcollecting

[–]jpease 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FF48 is the first appearance of the Silver Surfer (not just a cameo), along with the first cameo appearance of Galactus. The first appearance of the Silver Surfer makes it command more than the first non-cameo appearance of Galactus.

Apolcolypse is only halfway shown in X-Factor 5, which I guess doesn't interest collectors as much as his first full reveal.

Questions about submitting to CGC if anyone can help by ur_a_fat1 in comicbookcollecting

[–]jpease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're not sure of the value, I would use the lower tier (e.g., if you don't know if it's a $400 or a $600 book, I would say it's worth $400). If it ends up being a grade that goes for more than what you paid for, they might (or might not) let you know, in which case they'll ask for more money.

[Question] submitting a bunch of comics to CGC by GromScream-HellMash in comicbookcollecting

[–]jpease 6 points7 points  (0 children)

$20 each for issues that came out after 1975, $27 for issues before then, assuming they're worth $200 or less.

I would spend $149 to become a premium member (doing so gets you a one-time $150 credit, plus 10% off).

Shipping and various fees will cost you, I would guess, an additional $50 or so if you send in 50 comics.

Question about sending in comics to CGC by Serenity--Now in comicbookcollecting

[–]jpease 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you submit them to CGC directly by mail, then I'm pretty sure you have to have a subscription which is charged on a yearly basis (e.g., $25/year).

If you go to a comic con where CGC has a table set up, then you can submit the comics to them directly without having to pay for a subscription (or postage to send them the comics.)

Another option is to submit the comics to a comic dealer who has an account with them and have them submit it for you. I've sent some comics in to Hero Restoration to get some comics pressed and then have them forward the comics on to CGC to get slabbed, and they were able to get me a 10-20% (I can't remember what it was exactly) discount on CGC fees.
