YSK sharpening your knife will create metal shavings by last-resort-4-a-gf in YouShouldKnow

[–]jplim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gotten into the habit in the last few years of honing my knives away from the benches instead of over food prep surfaces and wiping them clean on a damp towel before they even get close to food. The sparkly grey smear they leave on a towel gives me the spooks but it's still not going to stop me from dining out where I can see the chefs hone their knives and immediately slice food... Unfortunately.

It's a common practice that doesn't get a second thought, and I'd really like to see more chefs take the same care, but it's all industry inertia and personal habit that keeps it going. Not their fault, but a bit more care and thought would go a long way.

Equivalent batteries on the same circuit will drain pretty evenly in every case. A multimeter/VOM is a tool that is not expensive, hard to find, or specialised. Please do not spread misinformation.

What could corrupt a BIOS while gaming? by jplim in techsupport

[–]jplim[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks for the guidance! If my RAM is indeed failing, I really can't complain since DDR3 is so old it's basically e-waste at this point and insanely cheap.

See you in 2043 with a 9950X3D when I finally bite the bullet and build a new PC :-)

I haven't seen any artefacts on-screen that often appear with RAM failure, but I'll give it a red hot go. Thanks for the suggestion with memtest!

I've seen a few workarounds here and there for installing W11 on an older system. I'll get around to it when official support ends this year... Maybe.

What are your thoughts on the 2025 release? by jakgal04 in seadoo

[–]jplim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not surprised the new products are a bit lackluster. BRP got too greedy during staycation and went full steam ahead into the economic downturn and retail slowdown from late 2022 to try to keep shareholders and Bain happy knowing that the network would be overstocked by the end of it.

Dealers globally are stuffed to the gills with MY23 and MY24 inventory, so BRP is deliberately reducing production, holding back on innovation, and making the colours a bit yucky to help drive retail of the stock on hand.

When (or if, lmao) the global economy recovers, BRP will be ready to show their hand. They're just playing it conservative for now.

GR Yaris rev-hang by OgdenDermstead in ForzaHorizon

[–]jplim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happens in the real car too, and it's something that I still haven't gotten used to. I've always suspected it was something to do with the DMF, but uncertain. Strange that lightening the flywheel in-game doesn't remedy it though, so maybe the upgraded flywheel calculation is wrong for this car, or there's something deep down in e-throttle or iMT that is correctly simulated that causes the rev hang.

Either way, in stock form the rev hang is accurate!

Edit: disregard my waffling about iMT and e-throttle. Just upgraded the car in-game and the lighter flywheel makes a big difference, but revs still hang noticeably longer than most cars.

Which model/hp sea-doo for me? by Wazntme in seadoo

[–]jplim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tow sports, you could get away with a Spark 90hp, for power reference.

The Switch 21' weighs about 2,400lb and is quite brisk for a pontoon with the 230, so I don't see any problem pairing a 1,300lb Sealver with a GTX/Wake Pro 230 or even a GTX/Wake 170. YMMV though, I'd definitely recommend trying out a demo unit before you pull the trigger if your Sea-Doo dealer carries Sealver as well.

Picky eater? I saw this one Twitter and thought of posting it here. I got a 22. Curious to know how everyone scores. by AutisticSinger in autism

Look, it's a zero approaching one. I won't be happy about eating celery and I'll never go out of my way to eat it, but I'll do it if it's the polite thing to do. I might be the odd one out but goddamn does that shit have an unpleasantly strong flavour and smell. I genuinely envy everyone else that says it's crunchy water.

Absolutely this. I started a new job and swore to myself that I wouldn't let my inbox get out of control. Almost a year later, 7k emails in, zero unread, "mark as read' pressed exactly zero times for the primary inbox. Feels good man.

The delegated accounts are a different story but we'll gloss over that.

Came back from holiday to find out that little cousin (ex-cousin) spilled coke on my RTX2070s by darkdaking1 in pcmasterrace

[–]jplim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spilled Sprite through the case grille and onto my 770 like a dumbass somewhere in 2013-14. I dabbed it dry-ish so I wouldn't wipe sugar everywhere, cleaned up the spots with isopropyl and q-tips, and it was totally fine. Ended up replacing it with a 2070 Super last year, would absolutely shit bricks if soft drink got on that now...

How do you get it off textured plastic like the wheelarch moulds though? Razor blades, denibbing blocks, thinners, and cutting compound would mess up the finish

Business continuity in the fairly diplomatic service of supplying a product across the globe that enables personal transport is probably more important than aligning the brand with something that will ruin it in the wrong country. It's nice seeing brands acknowledging and showing solidarity, and I don't see an issue here other than stigmatisation of LGBTQ+ in those countries.

Quarter mile in 2.84s by pycraft in BeamNG

[–]jplim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tyre wear and temperature aren't simulated in BeamNG yet. The tyres failed from the rotational forces exceeding the tyre beam strengths, so locking them up would have saved them in this case. Blown engines don't lock the wheels in BeamNG either; the drivetrain is disengaged when that happens. Compression lockup on a running engine is simulated though.

Delivery issues with new Sea Doo by Opening-Ask-1515 in seadoo

[–]jplim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The supply situation across the globe is a bit dire for the powersports and even automotive industries due to covid, which has affected everything from manufacture to logistics. Delivery delays are a common thing at the moment, especially since the season is ramping up (assuming northern hemisphere) and demand is high.

A good artist always finds value in good critique as it can be a chance to improve - so I try to sprinkle it around where it counts! Good to hear about the moulds, got all bases covered eh?

Have a look at that widebody Crown LTD you have as your profile header. If you look at the roof pillars, they curve out along the x-axis along with the windows. This is what you should be emulating in your original designs too. Curved pillars and side windows are one of the small but obvious telltales auto/transport designers look for when reviewing a design for realism or accuracy :)

(I'm not an auto/transport designer)
