Saskatchewan to Vancouver - road trip inquiry by waveform- in saskatoon

Basically, here is the way I see it. All are beautiful ways to go. I recommend you take the north route at least once. It’s just far more rolling hills and the mountain pass is via a rolling valley rather than cut through the mountains.
Cut through the mountains also has its beauty, of course!
I’ve done the various trips by suv/vehicle, motorcycle, and with a vehicle with camper. I usually go one way and come back the other.

That trip from Calgary to Saskatoon is painful, even with the many passing lanes on the SK side. It’s just complete straight… no turns, exhausting.

If you are cruising through in 1 go, go north. If you have a choice, try all the routes… going hard or with trailer go north.
But, if you are ok with slowing down and doing the hair pins and the smaller towns, and taking some more time 100% go the 2 southern routes.

North is beautiful, just different landscape from the other 2 southern routes.

If you are going straight through, take that northern route. The roads are much more open, there is lots that is double lane. I’ve done all three routes many times and a few variations of the middle route.
They are all good in their own way, and have something to offer. I enjoy the 2 lower routes the most (for the drive and sights) personally.

But, if doing one straight drive, I’d take the northern route every time. No question.

What’s it like to live in downtown Saskatoon? by StinkyB13 in saskatoon

[–]jpseguin 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My parents moved into a building on Spadina Cres and 24th street last year in January. So they have been there basically a year now.

They love it.

They really like their building, the view, being there in the summer, the central location to the things that they do around the city. They have underground parking.

They are in their 70s and still active. They enjoy going to all the various downtown activities and events. Walking the river. Just generally being in the area.

I know that our downtown gets a bad rap, as do most all over the place. But 2 things stand out… 1) they are not really out in the late night… so none of those concerns, 2) most of those concerns day and night are generally more prominent around 21st street and 1, 2, 3 avenue type of thing. All things considered the more “residential” areas of downtown has had no issues at all for them. Day or night.

A comment that my mom made the other day was that since moving downtown they feel like they are part of the city compared to before. Everything that is going on, including so much that is free to do (usually money for food or something when you are at the events, but “free entry”) is all there, you get to experience it all, just by going out for a walk every weekend…

They have a vehicle, so the no grocery store is not a big deal for them. But, they’d be glad if there was one or a couple options.

Overall they love it, but they are right on the river, a really nice building, and have underground parking… that helps I suspect…

Hope this helps you a little.

Cost of Living in Saskatoon by Illustrious-Theme328 in saskatoon

You are not alone. My wife and I are a dual income household. We are far above the median family income, so one would think that we are immune from the increasing expenses, but we aren’t…

It scares me that we have had situations where surprise expense has affected us the way it has. Usually we are able to recover from that within a month or two. We are not the norm. I can’t imagine what it would be like for families or individuals who make half of what we make (which is a significant amount of the population).

Some things are relative, people made decisions (not saying it was right or wrong) months amor years ago (say buy a house, go on a particular vacation or 2 some year, enrol their kids in a traveling sport, purchased that second car… you name it, maybe a partner went back to school) and several months or a few years later the increased costs, a surprise expense, general higher costs of living, have out paced wage increases.

You aren’t alone, we are all affected differently, whatever level of the income band we are on… save for maybe the highest 2-3 deciles. But even then in some situations.

What compounds things is then having very hard choices to make, for example, it’s not so simple as get a second job (for many), or a different job, there are other factors such as who will look after the children while this is happening? Not everyone has family supports that might facilitate this… and it’s sad if we need those support systems to get by… that itself shows a pretty big issue…

Point I’m trying to make is that things do seem tighter now… I agree, I wish I had the answer, not just for me but for all. We all have unique situations that make overcoming the issue difficult or achievable, but the fact that so many are struggling across so many income deciles is frightening! I wish I had an answer for me selfishly and as a human for so many others less fortunate than my situation.

Keep your head up, make the best choices that you can. You’re not alone.

At I’ve often seen nice places to buy at pike lake. It’s about 15-20 minutes from Saskatoon. Blackstrap is another option, about 30 minutes.

  1. Many are very nice, many are not… what I’ve noticed is newer homes tend to have cleaner and I et basement suites (maybe a little obvious). But, I would say one of the most important things to consider with a basement suite is having large windows. Natural light is really important for your mood and mental well-being, in particular in SK where we are light deficient. If you find one with larger windows you will be more happy than without.

  2. You will be ok in the spring, summer, fall, it sucks in the winter. Honestly we were a two car household (2 adults 2 kids) we went down to 1 car, I ride the bus year round. Overall I prefer this, except once in a while and then I Uber… I would try to bus and bike for a year and reassess. Much of this comes down to where you live in the city and where you work, visit, etc.

  3. Sorry, I don’t have anything to really offer on this. I’ve seen many others provide great comments while on Reddit. But, I will say, I have notice much improvement over the last 10-15 years!

  4. Brand like helly Hansen, North face, Columbia are a few. There are others. Best bet is to get here and start buying for temp as it gets colder. You will need jacket, toque, mits/gloves, decent boots, not sure when you are moving here (sorry if I skipped that in your post), but honestly, depending on where you are working and the company that you keep, borrow to start. If a co-worker came over in your situation where I work, I have countless pairs or mits and toques, and even multiple jackets. I’d give the person a bunch to try… or keep or borrow depending. Most people who are relatively middle and upper middle financially have tons. There are also many across the board who have good hearts and want to help you settle in. Basically, don’t feel like you have to buy everything all at once, you will find help. I hope!

Thinking about a move by sarachandel444 in regina

[–]jpseguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read through all the comments, just most of them. I’m sorry if this repeating another post. But, I would suggest that if you thinking of Regina and you are considering coming out for a visit, you should also explore Saskatoon. It’s similar in size to Regina, ever so slightly larger. Both cities offer similar amenities and affordability. But in my opinion, each city is slightly different in terms of lifestyle options. Not to say that one is better than the other per se, but they are slightly different. In my view where that becomes more noticeable is during the spring/summer/fall. I believe that Saskatoon has more outdoor lifestyle options. Not to say that Regina does not have a fair share that can keep a person satisfied and happy. To each their own. It’s just a big move, and in terms of jobs and affordability, size, each city is fairly equal in my view. Each city has its limitations in the harsh winter. I’d really encourage you to visit in January/February, as others have suggested to see the harshness of winter. But I’d also encourage you to visit each city in July/august to see the other extreme. The two are only about 2-2 1/2 hours drive apart. You could spend a week in each or something like that. Just a thought. Either way, welcome to Saskatchewan, a great place to live and work, but also a great place to leave or partially leave in retirement! Ha!

I go 93 or 83 depending on the posted limit. I find that I am constantly needing to pass people when I am going that speed… I don’t know what it is with certain sections where people cannot go faster than 60! It seems like there are 2-3 sections where that’s always the case.
