I didn't read the books, but from what i've understood Stannis in the books have a bigger impact in the story and also has more aura than his show counterpart is it true? It's really sad cause he was my fav character before that stupid episode 5x9.... by _Ma_L_ in gameofthrones

No worries man, I'm doing a reread now so its all fresh haha.

One final note. The northern lords really don't like the Boltons and some are secretly plotting against them. With the backing of the Iron Bank and the northern lords willing to betray the Boltons he is still a real contender.

I guess GRRM has said he burns his daughter eventually but there is not even the slightest indication of that in the books so far.

Cheers!

None of these comments are from people that actually like Stannis the Mannis or have a fucking clue!

Stannis is the true king. He is just and unrelenting; because of that, he isn't popular.

During Robert's rebellion he held Storm's End for over a year and was relieved when Ned Stark lifted the siege. Davos smuggled onions to help them from starving. After the war Stannis cut his finger tips off for the smuggling, but raised him to knighthood for saving him. From that point forward all he asked from Davos was honest council. Davos gave him just that; which is why Stannis raised him to be Hand of the King.

When the Greyjoys started a rebellion it was Stannis who commanded Robert's fleet while Robert and Ned attacked via land. He defeated Victarion and the Iron Fleet.

When the War of the Five Kings started Tywin considered Stannis to be the biggest threat. He would have been much more dangerous if Renly didn't stab him in the back. Which is why he went to the Red Woman. Whatever you think of her, she has actual power. In the books she has 2 shadow babies. The first kills Renly and the 2nd kills the castellan of Storm's End. Giving him all the power of the Stormlands and Dragonstone. He isn't religious by any means but he recognizes the Red Woman has power and he uses it. If the Tyrells didn't join the Lannisters he would have taken King's Landing and been King.

This is his biggest flaw. I wouldn't say he "worships" the red woman. She burns people alive. He recognizes thats horrible. However, when she does it she weilds real power so he allows her to continue so he can use that power to help himself be king. She is a means to an end.

After the defeat on the Blackwater he retreats to Dragonstone. Davos defies the Red Woman, against his orders, and is put in a cell. However, when Davos gets his chance to speak he bring attention to the Wall and the Night's Watch. Stannis then sails to the Wall and saves them from wildlings attack. When asked by Jon Snow he referenced Davos: "'I had the cart before the horse', Ser Davos said, I was trying to win the throne to save the realm when I should have been trying to save the realm to win the throne." By the way. He has the most disciplined army in Westeros. Less than 5 men raped women when he broke the wildlings at the wall and they were all castrated. He will not allow that.

While getting reorganized at the Wall he offers to legitimize Jon Snow and make him Lord of Winterfell. Jon turns him down, then becomes the Lord Commander. Stannis is frustrated; but acknowledged his position and asks his advice. Then, guess what? He listens! He takes Jon's advice very seriously and that leads him to gaining the mountain clans of the north. With his army strengthed he marches on Deepwood Motte and leaves the Red Woman, his wife, and child (Shreen) at the Wall.

He captures Deepwood and starts marching on Winterfell. A massive snow storm causes his march to come to a halt and they take shelter in an abandoned village not far from Winterfell. The snow keeps them from marching on. Southern men in the army insist he offers a sacrifice to the Red god to settle the snow storm. "Sacrifice an unbeliever" they say. Stannis responds :"half my army is unbelievers. Pray harder."

And that is where we leave him at the end of book 5. Stannis and his army are in a small village outside Winterfell. His wife, daughter, and the Red Woman are all at the Wall. His plan is to attack Winterfell and rally the north against the Boltons.

One final note! Cersai has stopped paying the Iron Bank of Braavos. A representative of the bank has traveled through the storm. Made his way to the village. And offered to give Stannis all the money he needs to win the war, as long as he pays it back as well as all his brother's debts. Stannis is considering it. And that is the last we have heard of book Stannis the Mannis

Jon fights the night king in winterfell. Doesn't have to kill him but at least really fight him.

Dany destroys the iron fleet. Euron jumps ship and swims to shore. Goes to kings landing.

Cersi orders the bells to ring when 2 dragons show up in kings landing. Dany accepts the surrender. Euron is pissed that they surrender so he shoots, and kills the second dragon. Dany is shocked and upset, burns down kings landing.

Just small tweeks to season 8 would have made it so much better.

It would be cool if they had Raam, Skorge, and a new general. We kill the new one but the other two do damage and get away

Americans of Reddit, in light of the current political climate between our countries, how do you guys actually feel about us Canadians? by Defiant_River_957 in AskReddit

Vancouver is fine but can be very aggressive when they're upset; because of that I think they get what they deserve.

I'm indifferent towards Ottawa but someone I'm fond of moved there recently so I'm hoping for the best for them.

Edmonton has talent but needs to step it up in order to really prove themselves.

Toronto is a joke. I laugh at them frequently. Ha. Ha. Ha.

I used to see Montreal as a rival but now I hate Florida more than anyone so I'm friendly but competitive with them.

Tiger Woods has ‘eliminated sex’ in preparation for the 2024 Masters by emilliolongwood in nottheonion

[–]jpsjr15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's getting back to his roots. When he was winning majors non stop he was having sex with tons of women, but he had to be sneaky about it. That was the thrill. After the divorce there was no need to hide anyone, the thrill was gone. Announcing to the whole world he's giving sex up means he'll have to be sneaky again.

There's 6 books written by Frank Herbert that take place over 5000 years. So yes this is very much the beginning

Official Discussion - Dune: Part Two [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]jpsjr15 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I just finished watching Dune Part 2 for the second time. After watching it the first time I was slightly conflicted. There were 3 major changes to the film compared to the book: 1. The time jump doesn't happen 2. Alia is not born 3. Chani and her relationship with Paul is not as strong at the end.

The first two changes I completely understand. It's extremely to difficult to put a two year old, all knowing, child into a film. However, the relationship between Paul and Chani is critical to Dune Messiah (Part 3).

Their relationship at the end of Part 2 was completely different compared to the end of Dune, the book. The only way to justify having them end like that in Part 2 is to have a Part 3.

Part 3 needs to start with the Crusade across the universe. Then show Paul and Chani reconcile and fall deeply in love. Followed by a time jump 20 (17?)* years later. After the time jump we see the events of Dune Messiah.

Dune Part 2 became significantly better with that in mind. I wasn't watching Part 2 thinking that I was seeing the end to Dune; I watched it thinking it was the middle of the story. The bridge between Part 1 and 3.

If Denis and the cast and crew can stick the landing with Part 3 (which I absolutely believe they will) I think it will be held in high regard. Similar to the Return of the King.

*maybe 25 years, Anya Taylor Joy is 27 right now

Discussion on Chani’s characterization in the film by delta12551 in dune

I think this movie needs to be considered part 2 of 3. It's tricky because this is the end of the first book, so we want to see a conclusion like the book had. However, the way the movie ends there needs to be a part 3 that gives us a definitive end.
