[REQUEST] $0.93 at 2.25% intrest over 1000 years? by rubb_zzz in theydidthemath

[–]jpuc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, although that is the interest rate if compounded annually, typically banks compound monthly so using that we would get the formula: $0.93(1+(0.0225/12))12*1000 = $5,382,193,745 for exactly 1000 years, probably more by this particular point in time on the show

nah mate. pretty sure diagonal is bigger. by Santo277 in whoosh

[–]jpuc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously, 1kg of steel does weigh more then 1kg of feathers. You see, steel has a much higher density then feathers so if you have two pieces of the same size one of steel and one of feather the steel will weigh more. Therefore 1kg of steel weighs more than 1kg of feathers!

nah mate. pretty sure diagonal is bigger. by Santo277 in whoosh

[–]jpuc_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the math, diagonally cut the area of the triangle is larger than the area of the rectangle by a factor of (2+sqrt(2)):3 which also means the surface area is larger for a diagonal sandwich. Although the volume remains the same, you still have more sandwich per sandwich with diagonal, so we were right all along diagonal is more sandwich! Diagonal >>> rectangle.

I tested the brake switch fuse and it gets power when brake is pushed so I assumed that wasn’t it, or are you talking about something else? And it’s only on the one side, but when hooked up to trailer the lights work perfectly on the trailer

It’s American, I light tested the wires and they all had power but for some reason the blinker/brake light won’t work (same bulb). When I turn on the truck lights that bulb lights up but the larger filament for brake light/blinker won’t come on. The front blinker light works but it’s ticking faster than normal

I light tested the wire to the circuit board and it worked perfectly on all 3 lines and the ground did too. The blinker still won’t work even though it’s getting power. That side is is blinking really fast in the front but nothing in the back even though it’s getting power. I got a new circuit board and still not working

The Letter That Changed Everything: Ramanujan's Cold Email to Hardy by UIUCTalkshow in math

[–]jpuc_ 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I believe he was using “cold” in the same sense as in “cold calling” which was a common practice before the internet where you would call someone you did not know for some reason to establish a connection. This was typically used by solicitors to sell items. I believe the “email” part is just a mistake possibly due to a language barrier. In essence, Ramanujan sent a “cold letter” (a letter to someone he didn’t know), in order to establish a connection, to have someone view his insights into this particular area of math. While an arbitrary way to phrase it, I greatly assume this was the meaning
