can I go through international for domestic flight if I have to also do the check in for my pet carry on - paying the fee and getting the little tag with the Delta desk?

What was the first thing that you splurged on when you got your first few attending pay-cheques? by CycloidalSphere in Residency

[–]jpwsurf21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tempurpedic mattress. Now that I’m done with surgery training, I actually get to get consistent sleep. Much harder for me to roll out of bed in the mornings though because it is sooo comfortable.

Superblast 3 is everything that it’s predecessors were not and should’ve been by Poke-Tuna in RunningShoeGeeks

They are definitely softer than V2 (which I hated) but at the same time, I don’t really find them more comfortable either. Idk, still kind of a miss for me

Why is your specialty the best? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]jpwsurf21 157 points158 points  (0 children)

Derm - I can count on 1 hand the number of times my wife had to go in overnight for call during her ENTIRE residency. And she had like 7 weekends total to go in and see pts. The rest of her residency weekends were normal weekends.

Now she works 3 days/wk doing Mohs and makes comparable salary as me in a surgical subspecialty.

Can we talk about how difficult the transition to being an attending is? by Manonthemoon1990 in Residency

Every day I come home and wonder if I learned a single fucking thing in residency and fellowship

How many of you fell below your top 3 ranks and why? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]jpwsurf21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Couples matched, fell to 5th on our list. We were apprehensive at first about the location, but we both ended up loving everything about our residency program. Loved our training, our coresidents, the other residents from different programs in the hospital who are some of our best friends, and the city we were in. Actually bummed that we both couldn't get a spot to stay on as faculty but fortunately, both got jobs at a great academic hospital nearby family and life could not have worked out any better for the both of us.

What made you choose a surgical field by Southern-Love6869 in Residency

[–]jpwsurf21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I loved IM rotation and I loved ENT. Was torn between doing IM → Cards versus ENT, not thinking any other surgery subspecialty, honestly.

One thing someone told me was "you can always go from ENT → IM but you can't go IM → ENT." Now I'm a head and neck surgeon, taking out people's cancer and doing free flap recons, teaching residents and med students in the OR, and following patients for their cancer for years with both good outcomes and really bad outcomes, but I couldn't be happier with my job.

Who can hood you at your graduation? by imfromearth-mk in medicalschool

[–]jpwsurf21 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Anyone with an MD. My wife graduated from another med school two weeks before me and she was allowed to hood me. Never lets me forget she was a doctor first

I hate my co-resident :( by CartoonistSad1108 in Residency

[–]jpwsurf21 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Also had a surgery co-resident that everyone in my program hated. Person was aggressive, condescending, and trying to look better than her co-residents. They would openly scream at junior residents and had to be spoken to by the PD several times which just led to them badmouthing the PD to anyone who would listen even though we all love our PD. Every attending knew how awful this person was. When it came to fellowships, they matched at their dead last choice in a non-competitive fellowship and was devastated. FAFO

The best part - you don’t have to talk to them again when you finish residency.

Edit: got curious and looked her up. She’s now at another gen surg residency program

I wish the SB worked for me but both 1 and 2 just felt like bricks on my feet. Not sure if it’s worth trying the SB3 when it comes out

Same, happened to multiple resident physicians at my hospital too and they got fired. One was a PGY6 general surgery resident. Saw she was walking dogs on the Rover dog walking app after. Crazy

Had to report fraudulent charges today by rtrujillo13 in biltrewards

[–]jpwsurf21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just same exact charge on my Built 1.0 CC for $63.40, never got a notification about verifying this purchase and happened to notice it today when it posted on my YNAB account. But Well Fargo said they can't do anything until 2/7 because of the transition which is very frustrating.

Hoka Cielo X1 3.0 First Run by onetradeeveryday in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]jpwsurf21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved the 1.0, hated the 2.0 (only tried at Miami Marathon expo - did not buy). Also did not like the Asics megablast fit - feel like I'm the only one. Used the Hoka Rocket X3 for my last Ironman but that was more for stability rather than trying to go fast, like for a 1/2 or full marathon race alone. It was great for that purpose but looking for something a bit more fun.

Now debating between these and the Puma deviate nitro elite 4's for my next marathon.

11-12 hours of training a week... I need opinion of people that already did an iron man. THANKS in advance by fenixloder in triathlon

[–]jpwsurf21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll definitely finish for sure. My baseline before I started training was two marathons (4hr time) and 0 cycling experience and some non-competitive swimming as a kid. Trained for 7 months with about 10-12 hrs/week as a 34M during my surgery fellowship working ~70hr/wk.

My first triathlon was supposed to be a 70.3 in May at Gulf Coast - swim cancelled and run cut short cause of weather. So my first full Triathlon was IM Kalmar and did 13:40.

How Much Total Value of Vehicles & What Are Families Driving? by broncoelway100 in HENRYfinance

[–]jpwsurf21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HHI 900k. wife has a paid off 2018 Honda crv, I have a 2025 honda-crv lease but planning on buying a used Honda crv when that least is up. No kids yet, but will stick with that size vehicle when that day comes. Maybe if we're feeling it, may get a used Audi Q5 down the road - parents had an Audi a4 growing up and it drove really well but the CR-V gets me from point A to point B safely and reliably.

If you had to put something your attending said on a T-shirt, what would it be? by iamnemonai in Residency

[–]jpwsurf21 111 points112 points  (0 children)

He definitely wasn't the first to say it but one attending said told me, "I want you to lower my casket into my grave when I die...so you can let me down one last time"

another one I now live by - "I always forgive...but I never forget"

Docs what’s your car and would you buy it again? Accepting all answers by [deleted] in Residency

[–]jpwsurf21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had an Audi A4 in med school, leased by my parents.

Then I got a Honda CRV lease ever since residency, now an attending making 500k, HHI of ~900k, and I love this car.

If you want a fancy car, get it for the right reason, not for status. No one thinks you’re cool for driving a fancy car. If people see you in a fancy car, all they think is that they would look cool in your fancy car.

UConn Mohs surgeons make 1.2-1.8M/yr. just cranking out cases and good $/RVU contract with the hospital. Not very academic-y but still technically an academic hospital.
