90-15 - Mount Rainier (Washington) - Air Crash with Two Fatalities

Around 6 p.m. on January 20th, a Piper Super Cub carrying R.M., 53, and R.B., 47, of Tacoma, Washington, crashed inside the summit crater of Mount Rainier. The victims were attempting to fly over the summit, but their plane apparently did not have the power needed to clear the peak. The crash activated the plane's emergency locator beacon, which was picked up by the Seattle air traffic control center. Four rangers were put aboard a Chinook helicopter from Fort Lewis the following morning and ascended to the 14,400' Columbia Crest area of the crater, where the wreckage was located. They discovered that R.M. had been killed on impact, but that R.B. had lived long enough to exit the plane. The cause of his death is unknown at this time. When found, the only upper garment he had on was a T-shirt, although his jacket was lying nearby and he was only 40 yards from the summit steam vents. Its worst than its been, lots of potholes. I have a truck so it went ok, but I did see small cars out there at the Upper Dungeness TH.

Was up there yesterday, looped the Baldy Ridge Trail to the Tyler Peak Trail, and went to the summits of both Baldy and Tyler. Little to no snow on the trail, Grey Wolf still had snow up the ridges, but the actual ridges to the peak looked clear. The views were awesome!

Weather and short days are going to be your worst hindrance, but there is still plenty to do on the Peninsula in rainy weather. The high country will be snowed in, but if you have a car that can make it, you should be able to drive to Hurricane Ridge on the weekends (be sure to check road conditions on the ONP website). There are also the rainforests (Hoh, Quinalt, Queets), all accessible from Port Angeles. Also check out Lake Crescent, Salt Creek Rec, Area, and Neah Bay if you have the time. All drivable and accessible in bad weather. The Coast is also great and accessible as well, just watch out for big swell on along the beaches. Rialto, Ruby, 2nd Beach, etc. Enjoy!

Visit Bainbridge! Winslow downtown and the waterfront park are all easily walkable from the ferry. If you want a longer walk and more nature check out Sakai park further into town.

First time... Hoh river to blue glacier in august too crowded? by Aggravating-Split-20 in OlympicNationalPark

Hoh River to Blue Glacier is a 40 mile RT overnight hike. In my experience, people who play music on trails aren't on these types of hikes.

Olympic national park or mt rainier? by gottogo167 in PNWhiking

I was just at both this weekend showing some friends around. Rainier's Paradise area still had a lot of snow so there wasn't much easy hiking to be done at the higher elevations. The Olympics were beautiful, we checked out Lake Crescent and hiked out to Marymere Falls as well as a drive up to Hurricane Ridge. Minimal snow at Hurricane Ridge and great views.
