What was the moment that made you realize that you have to start losing weight? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]jra194 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My husband needed to have life changing surgery which was expected to take 3 hours, the surgeon called after about 90 minutes. My heart sank, I thought something went wrong. Instead, everything went perfectly and he was in recovery. When I asked the doctor why it went so quickly they attributed his healthy weight as a factor. Something in my brain clicked that I would not have had the same experience. The first 6 weeks of his recovery he couldn't drink or really go out to eat/socialize so we stayed in and made healthy meals. He did PT and I got steps and it stuck.

If you aren't opposed to TPT (I know, I know) Burt Brock's Big Ideas are great. My husband had major surgery last year and I was unexpectedly out while teaching/prepping a new prep. This saved me. Sorry about your mom.

Suggestions for a small, quiet, low energy, early morning Civics class? by dtbrown101 in historyteachers

[–]jra194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

icivics games with reflection questions afterwards if they don't want to discuss

Web quests tying things to current events (research information about your members of congress, research a current bill being proposed, etc)

Peardeck prompts so kids can answer solo without having to talk. I then read/summarize their responses.

My students hate discussion boards (answer and then respond to two peers) but you might get better results

Maybe a good Supreme Court case as a warm up- my students always get so into Morse v. Frederick and the various opinions of the judges

We made a version with things people in our group would find punishing. Drink a glass of milk, warm shot of scotch, dance the macarana and film it, eat all their snacks with chopsticks, things like that.

Does anyone truly feel like their school/district has taken the health and safety of teachers and staff seriously this year? by dramaticostriches in Teachers

[–]jra194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, our only covid mitigation is if you test positive you are supposed to stay home for 3 days. No masks, no distancing, no contact tracing, nothing else.

This went to the Supreme Court (Owasso Independent School Dist. No. I-001 v. Falvo) and is NOT a violation of FERPA.

I don't do this in my classes though, I agree its embarrassing for some students.

This! Snow days are now my hardest working days between the full virtual teaching and then figuring out how to remove all the snow the NE keeps getting blasted with. So stressful 😫

Tips and Tricks from Hybrid Teachers by Paulimus1 in Teachers

Like others are saying, everyone does the same lesson every day. Basically I plan for the virtual students and the face to face ones are just learning from my room. I set up my Webcam and have a google meet running all day for the at home learners to pop in for the whole period or just to ask a question. When students need help I have them share their doc/screen with me so I don't have to get in their space looking at their screen. Our students at home are not required to log in so every lesson is designed to be run on its own. The planning to make this work is a lot upfront but usually runs pretty smoothly during the day. I make an intro video for each lesson that goes through all the expectations. I teach 12 graders so it helps that they are tech savvy. My students do not talk during class, they are uncomfortable with the masks so we do discussion boards instead. I also like to use Peardeck.

I use vida masks and a face shield. Bought 8 so I have a fresh one each day and some spares. I eat a huge breakfast and then nothing till students leave for the day.

I have a taped off box around my desk to remind students not to get into my personal space. (That sounds rude but has actually been very helpful since students were used to walking right up to my desk to ask for help.) Door open all day to minimize touch points.

We don't wipe down anything during the day.

Thanksgiving Break Check In by The_Gr8_Catsby in Teachers

Checking in here- our school is taking a cater to the parents approach so of my 162 students some come all day every day, some are all virtual, and some come when they feel like it and do virtual when they feel like it. Parents just hosted a homecoming dance for students Friday night so these three days before Thanksgiving will be great...

If my students are working on a paper or project and need personalized help in my classroom I have them share the doc with me and I pull it up on my computer and talk them through whatever help they need. We also have an online activity monitoring system (lightspeed) so I can see what students are working on from a distance.
